Adolescent medicine faculty development needs.

Adolescent medicine faculty physicians were surveyed regarding training, career, and perceived needs. Most stated that training in teaching, research, and administration would be useful. Time spent in adolescent medicine activities was not associated with satisfaction, whereas having a mentor was. These issues should be considered when addressing faculty development needs.

Cannabis and adolescent brain development.

Heavy cannabis use has been frequently associated with increased rates of mental illness and cognitive impairment, particularly amongst adolescent users. However, the neurobiological processes that underlie these associations are still not well understood. In this review, we discuss the findings of studies examining the acute and chronic effects of cannabis use on the brain, with a particular focus on the impact of commencing use during adolescence. Accumulating evidence from both animal and human studies suggests that regular heavy use during this period is associated with more severe and per

The adolescent. Athletics and development.

An appreciation of adolescent growth and development is essential to the understanding of problems faced by the adolescent athlete. Early adolescence (ages 10-15 years) can be characterized as the body period. Physical growth is genetically determined and can be influenced by disease, injury, and nutrition. Early maturers are subject to adult expectations which may lead to either failure or excessive acclaim. Middle adolescence (ages 15-18 years) is the sexuality period, with special emphasis on gender identity. Friendships are critical, and athletics can be a focal point for showing love and

Adolescent Brain Development and Medical Decision-making.

With a few notable exceptions, adolescents do not possess the legal authority to provide consent for or refuse medical interventions. However, in some situations, the question arises regarding whether a mature minor should be permitted to make a life-altering medical decision that would be challenged if made by the minor's parent. In this article, I explore what we currently know about the adolescent brain and how that knowledge should frame our understanding of adolescent decision-making. The prevailing approach to determining when adolescents should have their decisions respected in the medi

Development: Pubertal Hormones Meet the Adolescent Brain.

At the onset of puberty, ovarian hormones increase inhibitory tone in the prefrontal cortex. Inhibitory maturation is a hallmark of the initiation of developmental windows of neural plasticity; pubertal hormones may trigger the opening of an adolescent critical period for experience-dependent rewiring of circuits underlying executive function.

Stress vulnerability during adolescent development in rats.

Adolescent development is proposed to represent a time of increased susceptibility to stress. During adolescence, the brain demonstrates a high level of plasticity and can be positively or negatively affected by the environment. This study tests the hypothesis that adolescent development is a stage of enhanced vulnerability to chronic stress. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to our 14-d chronic variable stress (CVS) paradigm at three developmental stages: 1) early adolescence (35 d; age at initiation of CVS); 2) late adolescence (50 d); or 3) adulthood (80 d). We examined the effects of C

Does later chronotype cause poorer adolescent mental health? An adolescent brain cognitive development study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether chronotype (biobehavioral preference for sleep and wake timing) across early adolescence impacts mental health symptoms at age 13-14. This is a relationship with growing correlational evidence but limited causal exploration. METHODS: Participants were 7,489 adolescents (aged 9-10 at baseline; 13-14 at the fifth assessment wave) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD). Marginal structural models with machine learning-based weight estimation were used to assess the causal impact of chronotype at ages 11-12 and 12-13, as measured b

Cannabis legalization and early adolescent expectancies: Findings from the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

PURPOSE: Cannabis legalization in the U.S. has introduced an ongoing public health challenge. Among adults, cannabis legalization is associated with increased cannabis use and shifting attitudes toward cannabis use. These expectancies, or personal beliefs about the outcomes of a behavior, are both positive (e.g., increased relaxation) and negative (e.g., cognitive impairment). With rapid shifts in state-level cannabis legislation, the associations of these policies with adolescent cannabis expectancies are unknown. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cogni

Early adolescent gender diversity and mental health in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

BACKGROUND: There are known associations between mental health symptoms and transgender identity among adults. Whether this relationship extends to early adolescents and to gender domains other than identity is unclear. This study measured dimensions of gender in a large, diverse, sample of youth, and examined associations between diverse gender experiences and mental health. METHODS: The ABCD study is an ongoing, longitudinal, US cohort study. Baseline data (release 2.0) include 11,873 youth age 9/10 (48% female); and the 4,951 1-year follow-up visits (age 10/11; 48% female) completed prior

Development of the Perth Adolescent Worry Scale (PAWS).

Tools to assess worry among adolescents exist but do not capture the content of worries. This study reports on the development of a brief, psychometrically sound measure of worry for use with adolescents. Phase 1 involved identification of 27 potential items from existing instruments as well as item generation identified in interviews with students, teachers, school psychologists, and parents. In Phase 2, the candidate items were completed by 835 Australian adolescents (317 males, 508 females, 10 unspecified; Mean age = 13.55, SD = 1.31) from Grades 5 to 10. These data were randomly split in h

Impact of Carbohydrate Restriction on Healthy Adolescent Development.

Carbohydrate-restricted diets are known for their impact on weight loss; however, research is still required to determine if low-carbohydrate diets are safe for adolescents. Carbohydrates directly stimulate an insulin response, and studies have recently shown that insulin and binding to respective insulin receptors (IRs) are critical in Kisspeptin (Kiss1) neuronal development. These neurons directly stimulate gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which activates the pituitary-gonadal axis during puberty. This information suggests that carbohydrate restriction may delay pubertal development in adoles

Development and vulnerability factors in adolescent alcohol use.

This article provides an overview of the characteristics of adolescent alcohol use, normative and subgroup variations in drinking behavior, and the important factors associated with an increased risk for developing alcohol problems in later adolescence and young adulthood. Parental or family histories of alcoholism, temperament traits, conduct problems, cognitive functioning, alcohol expectancies, and peer and other social relations are identified as factors influencing an adolescent's susceptibility for initiating a variety of alcohol use behaviors. The deviance prone model, proposed by Sher

Papilla (nipple) development in puberty. The adolescent male.

Papilla (nipple) development was studied in 230 males (119 black, 111 white) aged 3-29 years to compare this development to the established criteria for sexual maturation. Comparison was also made with a previous study of female nipple development to determine whether or when any differences between male and female nipple development occurred. Our male subjects were further assessed to determine if nipple size differed in the presence or absence of gynecomastia. Significant nipple development occurred between pubic hair stages PH1 (diameter 2.8 mm), PH4 (4.4 mm), and PH5 (5.4 mm). Similarly, t

Adolescent brain development in girls with Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a common sex chromosome aneuploidy in females associated with various physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional phenotypes. However, few studies have examined TS-associated alterations in the development of cortical gray matter volume and the two components that comprise this measure-surface area and thickness. Moreover, the longitudinal direct (i.e., genetic) and indirect (i.e., hormonal) effects of X-monosomy on the brain are unclear. Brain structure was assessed in 61 girls with TS (11.3 ± 2.8 years) and 55 typically developing girls (10.8 ± 2.3 years) for up to 4 tim

Mothers adapt their voice during children's adolescent development.

Mothers alter their speech in a stereotypical manner when addressing infants using high pitch, a wide pitch range, and distinct timbral features. Mothers reduce their vocal pitch after early childhood; however, it is not known whether mother's voice changes through adolescence as children become increasingly independent from their parents. Here we investigate the vocal acoustics of 50 mothers of older children (ages 7-16) to determine: (1) whether pitch changes associated with child-directed speech decrease with age; (2) whether other acoustical features associated with child-directed speech c
