Child and adolescent mental health services in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, one in five children and adolescents suffer from mental health disorders, while facing limited opportunities for treatment and recovery. Growing up, they face multiple challenges that might contribute to the development of mental disorders. Uganda is a developing country with a history of prolonged civil and regional wars associated with child soldiers, large numbers of refugees and internally displaced people due to natural disasters and unrests, and a large infectious disease burden mainly due to acute respiratory tract infections, malaria and HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVE: T

Interpersonal psychotherapy in child and adolescent mental health services.

Over the past two decades, Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) has shown itself to be one of only two evidence-based psychotherapies for the treatment of depression in adolescence-an age group where the prescribing of antidepressant medication is limited and where morbidity and recurrence are high. We review the literature on the development and research studies of the IPT model for depressed adolescent patients, as well as recent developments expanding its use to other cultures and different diagnostic areas. An overview is provided of the model in action, using a fictionalized case vignette. F

Addressing diversity in adolescent sexual and reproductive health services.

The social, economic, and biological events that mark adolescence profoundly influence and shape future adult lives. Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, education, and other social programs are needed to support young people for a healthy start. As adolescents transition into adulthood, SRH programs and services that have skilled health providers, in combination with other social services including comprehensive sexuality education, can help prevent unwanted pregnancies, maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. Programs and ser

Clinician-rated mental health in outpatient child and adolescent mental health services: associations with parent, teacher and adolescent ratings.

BACKGROUND: Clinician-rated measures are used extensively in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). The Health of the Nation Outcome Scales for Children and Adolescents (HoNOSCA) is a short clinician-rated measure developed for ordinary clinical practice, with increasing use internationally. Several studies have investigated its psychometric properties, but there are few data on its correspondence with other methods, rated by other informants. We compared the HoNOSCA with the well-established Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) questionnaires: the Child Behav

Parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health and the utilization of adolescent-friendly health services in Kailali, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are vulnerable to various sexual and reproductive health (SRH) problems such as unintended pregnancy, HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unsafe abortion. Adolescent-friendly health services offer SRH services such as SRH counseling, contraceptive services, STI and HIV services, and abortion-related services, which may help prevent these risks. Parent-adolescent communication about SRH prevents adolescents from adopting unhealthy SRH practices. However, its association with the utilization of SRH services is less known. Therefore, this study examine

Health facility capacities for providing adolescent sexual and reproductive health services in Southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Provision of adolescent-friendly Health services (AFHS) at lower primary health care centres (PHCs) is a core strategy for improving access and health outcomes of adolescents. In this study we assessed the health facility-based prevalence of repeat adolescent pregnancies and the capacity of PHCs (Health centres (HC) level III and IV) to provide AFHS in Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between April and May 2023 involving 43 healthcare facilities (33 HC III and 10 HC IV) across 4 districts in Southwestern Uganda. Using pretested structured questionnaires, we in

Views of Service Providers and Adolescents on Use of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services by Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

This review examines the literature on adolescents' and providers' views on access and use of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) information and services. The SRH services referred to in this study were predominantly family planning services, STI treatment including HIV testing and counselling services. The study design was a systematic review of empirical studies. Twenty-five databases were searched using a well-defined search strategy and Boolean operators. A total of 45 studies were included in the review, and the findings were reported thematically under four emerging themes. The review

Correlates of adolescents' satisfaction with mental health services.

While there has been increased attention to consumers' satisfaction with mental health services as an indicator of quality of care, little is known about the construct of consumer satisfaction, especially for youth. The goal of this study was to examine potential correlates of adolescents' satisfaction with mental health services. One hundred eighty adolescents who had received out-patient mental health services completed a multidimensional satisfaction scale and measures of behavior problems, attitudes and expectations about treatment, perceived choice/motivation in seeking treatment, and ser

Transition of care for adolescents from paediatric services to adult health services.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that the process of transition from paediatric (child) to adult health services is often associated with deterioration in the health of adolescents with chronic conditions.Transitional care is the term used to describe services that seek to bridge this care gap. It has been defined as 'the purposeful, planned movement of adolescents and young adults with chronic physical and medical conditions from child-centred to adult-oriented health care systems'. In order to develop appropriate services for adolescents, evidence of what works and what factors act as barriers

Adolescent utilization of school based mental health services in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Over 14 million adolescents have a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder yet only 20% receive adequate mental health services. There is a critical need to identify accessible and effective pathways to treatment. School based mental health services (SBMHS) are an optimal setting for timely identification, effective management, and convenient delivery of evidence-based mental health care. METHODS: Using data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we employed structural equation modeling to examine the relationships between utilization of SBMHS and scho

The perspectives of adolescents with urinary incontinence on their health service needs.

AIM: Urinary incontinence in adolescents is an under-recognized, chronic condition despite the availability of effective interventions. Adolescents with urinary incontinence experience greater social, emotional, and psychological difficulties and more school-related distress compared to their peers with normal bladder control. This study aims to describe the health care needs of adolescents with urinary incontinence, through their lived experiences with continence services. METHODS: This study employed a phenomenological approach within an interpretivist paradigm to explore the lived experien
