Breastfeeding experiences of urban adolescent mothers.

This qualitative descriptive study examined the breastfeeding experiences of urban adolescent mothers using a combination of focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Analysis of verbatim interview text, field, and debriefing notes was undertaken to discover categories, themes and an emerging conceptual framework. Twenty-three teens, between the ages of 14 and 18, enrolled from two postpartum clinics described the process of teens' breastfeeding decision-making, initiation, continuation, and termination of breastfeeding. Roughly half of the teens were currently breastfeeding and the other h

Processes underlying Mexican-origin adolescent mothers' BMI.

OBJECTIVE: To examine potential mediating and moderating factors in the longitudinal association between contextual stressors (economic hardship, ethnic discrimination) and subsequent engagement in risky behaviors and body mass index (BMI) of Mexican-origin adolescent mothers. METHOD: Participants were Mexican-origin adolescent mothers (N = 204) who were recruited from community agencies and high schools in a Southwestern metropolitan area. Contextual stressors and risky behaviors were assessed 3 and 4 years postpartum. Adolescent mothers' BMI was assessed 5-years postpartum. Path analyses as

Depression among adolescent mothers: a pilot study.

Eighteen women less than 22 years old, who had their first child during adolescence, were assessed with a standard in-depth diagnostic interview for the presence of and/or history of depression and other disorders. Eight of the 18 women (44%) had experienced at least one episode of major depressive disorder at some point in their lives. A majority of episodes had their onset during pregnancy. Moreover, six women (33%) were experiencing a diagnosable form of depression at the time of the interview. Most of the women who had been depressed experienced at least part of their depression while they

Obstetric anal sphincter injury in adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) is a debilitating complication of vaginal delivery which has yet to receive ample attention in adolescents. The aim of this study was to describe risk for OASI in adolescent mothers compared to adults. We further attempted to compare risk factors for OASI between these two age groups. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study between 2003 and 2019. Primiparous women who delivered vaginally, 21 years and younger were compared to women ages 26-35. Excluded were preterm, multifetal, non-vertex, cesarean deliveries as well as intrauterin

Mental health issues in adolescent mothers and young adult mothers: the Brazilian context.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze anxiety and depression levels in adolescent and young adult mothers. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted across Brazil's five regions. A non-probabilistic sample of 1177 adolescent (10-19 years) and young adult (20-29 years) mothers was selected proportionally based on regional live birth rates. Data collection (August 2022-May 2023) involved a structured questionnaire assessing mental health (DASS-21), family support, and quality of life. Statistical analyses were performed using RStudio©, with p-values < 0.05 considered significant. The study

Adolescent mothers and their children in later life.

The popular belief that early childbearing almost certainly leads to school dropout, subsequent unwanted births and economic dependence is greatly oversimplified, if not seriously distorted: A longitudinal study of over 300 primarily urban black women who gave birth as adolescents in the middle to late 1960s shows that a substantial majority completed high school, found regular employment and, even if they had at some point been on welfare, eventually managed to escape dependence on public assistance. Relatively few ended up with large families; most had fewer births than they had wanted or ex

Mothers adapt their voice during children's adolescent development.

Mothers alter their speech in a stereotypical manner when addressing infants using high pitch, a wide pitch range, and distinct timbral features. Mothers reduce their vocal pitch after early childhood; however, it is not known whether mother's voice changes through adolescence as children become increasingly independent from their parents. Here we investigate the vocal acoustics of 50 mothers of older children (ages 7-16) to determine: (1) whether pitch changes associated with child-directed speech decrease with age; (2) whether other acoustical features associated with child-directed speech c

Psychosocial stressors of drug-abusing disadvantaged adolescent mothers.

The Problem Oriented Screening Instrument for Teenagers (POSIT) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to 55 disadvantaged adolescent mothers who abused drugs during pregnancy and 49 nondrug-abusing disadvantaged adolescent mothers. Results suggested that the drug-abusing mothers were depressed (BDI = 14) while the nondrug-abusing mothers were nondepressed (BDI = 6). In addition, the drug-abusing mothers reported more mental and physical health problems, more problematic family and peer relationships, poorer social skills, more aggressive behavior, less constructive use of l

Adolescent Pregnancy: A Case-Series Study of 112 Adolescent Mothers and Their Newborns.

Background Although declining, adolescent pregnancy remains an important health concern and is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. We aimed to characterize adolescent pregnancy in a level II hospital and the observed maternal, fetal, and perinatal complications. Methods We conducted a case-series study of five-years duration with adolescent mothers and their newborns. We collected sociodemographic, obstetric, and neonatal data through chart review and conducted a comparison analysis between newborns who needed hospitalization and those who did not. Results We identified 112 ne

Lived Pregnancy and Motherhood Experience Among Early Adolescent Mothers.

IntroductionThis study explored the experiences of early adolescent mothers (11-15 years) with pregnancy and motherhood.MethodsWe employed a phenomenological qualitative design, with in-depth semi-structured interviews. Snowballing and purposive sampling techniques were used in the selection of 20 early adolescent mothers (11-15 years) for the interview. Data were analyzed using the six-step thematic content analysis espoused by Braun and Clark.ResultsThe causes of adolescent pregnancy include peer pressure, engagement in intimate partner relationships, rape, broken home environment, and alcoh

Randomised control language intervention for infants of adolescent mothers.

AIM: Create a Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA)-based intervention to increase adolescent and infant speech and improve 12-month language outcomes. METHODS: Randomised control trial of adolescent (15-19 years) mother-infant pairs comparing language-motor (intervention) and motor (control) groups. Intervention included reviewing language-motor curriculums, formative feedback on 4 LENA recordings (baseline, post-curriculum, 4 and 12-months) and 16-weekly language-motor texts. Controls reviewed a motor curriculum, summative feedback of four recordings after study completion and 4-monthly moto

Impact of traumatic birth experience on Latina adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND: The childbirth experience can be a wonderful event, or one of horror. One in 3 adult mothers appraises her childbirth experience as traumatic, with up to 10% of women reporting a severe traumatic stress response post-delivery. The impact of the birth experience on adolescents is unknown. METHODS: Eighty-five Latinas ages 13 to 19 appraised their childbirth experience and reported symptoms of trauma impact as measured via the Impact of Event Scale (IES) within 72 hours of delivery. Descriptive statistics included demographic, obstetrical, and personal factors, and trauma scores. AN
