OBJECTIVES: Multiple tuberculosis (TB) exposures have been reported in New York City (NYC) adult day care and senior centers. Strategies to identify TB transmission at such locations are needed.
METHOD: Review of the NYC TB Registry identified 12 contact investigations (CIs) at adult day care or senior centers (2011-2018).
RESULTS: Median age of the 12 index patients was 81 years. Of 148 contacts identified who had no history of TB infection or disease, 141 (95%) were tested for TB, primarily with interferon gamma release assays; 46 (33%) tested positive. Transmission was probable (n = 3) or

Two hundred participants (mean age = 80 years) from five senior day-care centers were included in a study of agitation. Staff members at the centers and participants' relatives rated the frequency with which participants displayed agitated behaviors, via an expanded version of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory. The most frequent behaviors noted were general restlessness, repetitious sentences, verbal interruptions, and pacing. A three-factor solution for staff members' ratings included (a) physically nonaggressive behaviors, including general restlessness and pacing; (b) verbally agitate

In 2014, a greater percentage of residential care communities than adult day service centers provided five of seven selected services. The majority of residential care communities provided pharmacy services (82%); followed by transportation for social activities (79%); physical, occupational, or speech therapy (69%); hospice (62%); skilled nursing (59%); and mental health services (52%). Fewer than half provided social work services (48%). The majority of adult day services centers provided transportation for social activities (69%); skilled nursing (66%); and social work (52%). %). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the perspectives on advance care planning (ACP) among older adults in Macao.
METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was conducted by using three open-endead questions. A total of 285 purposively sampled older adults from senior day centers participated in this study. Content analysis was conducted using NVivo software.
RESULTS: The study comprehensively understood older adults' perspectives on ACP, identifying key findings comprising 6 clusters and 15 meaning units. It summarized the willingness and unwillingness to participate, pivotal enabling fa

Swallowing safety is one of the top health concerns of dementia. Coughing and choking (coughing/choking) are signs of impaired swallowing safety. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of regular physical exercise-based swallowing intervention for reducing coughing-choking at the dementia day-care center. This was a retrospective analysis with data from medical records, including age, the clinical dementia rating (CDR), and the frequencies of coughing/choking in ten days (10-day coughing/choking). Those who complied with the exercise programs were assigned to the exercise-based grou

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effectiveness of a virtual reality based nostalgic cognitive training program for older adults attending day-care centers.
METHODS: In this two-arm randomized controlled trial (N = 55; mean age = 81.24 years), participants received 12 sessions of VR-based nostalgic cognitive training integrating culturally familiar Taiwanese life scenes (1960s-1990s) with structured multidomain cognitive tasks, or routine activities. The prespecified primary outcome was global cognitive function (MoCA-T). Prespecified secondary outcomes were nostalgia propensity (SNS), depr

The increases in the older population, the prevalence of dementia, and the resulting social costs are burdensome to individuals, families, and the nation. This study examines whether the social robot PIO program intervention is effective for cognitive function and depression for older adults with mild to moderate dementia using two daycare centers in Daegu, Korea. Older adults with mild to moderate dementia and using a daycare center were included in the experimental (n = 33) and control (n = 33) groups. The experimental group participated in the social robot PIO program twice a week, 12 sessi

BACKGROUND: This review aimed to investigate the effectiveness and quality of support and provision within day service centres for people with intellectual disabilities.
METHOD: The International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, Scopus and PsycInfo databases were searched in August 2024, and the results were reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. Peer-reviewed, English-language, qualitative studies that investigated the effectiveness of day service provision for people with intellectual disabilities in non-residential settings were considered for review. BACKGROUND: Adult day services (ADS) are therapeutic, social, and health-related activities that keep people in their homes, rather than institutional settings. While there is a growing body of literature on ADS for older adults, there is far less information available about ADS for younger adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDDs).
METHOD: Researchers conducted a scoping review of 6 databases (892 total articles).
RESULTS: After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 74 full articles were reviewed, with 10 articles meeting study requirements. The research team fo

OBJECTIVES: A national survey was conducted in the Italian Day Care Centers hosting people with dementia (DCCs). This national survey aimed to describe the characteristics, the organizational structure and the opening period during the COVID-19 pandemic of the DCCs.
METHODS: A list of all national DCCs was provided by representatives from each Italian region. The online questionnaire consisted of two main parts: a profile section (location, access) and a data collection form (organization, services, treatments, activities, and any discontinuation of the services due to the COVID-19 outbreak).

BACKGROUND: Adult day programs aim to facilitate aging in place by supporting the health and well-being of persons with dementia and providing respite to their caregivers. However, studies on the effects of day programs are inconclusive, and we especially lack insights into the context conditions and mechanisms of day programs that may produce different outcomes for different groups of persons with dementia and their caregivers. Our objective was to conduct a realist review, synthesizing research on day programs to develop program theories explaining how and why day programs do or do not produ

BACKGROUND: In 2023, Age UK developed the UK's first day centre dementia village at a facility in the North West of England, designed to evoke positive memories and promote engagement in meaningful everyday activities. However, the impacts introducing this dementia village facility have not yet been systematically explored. This study aimed to qualitatively examine the experiences and perceived impacts of engaging with the Age UK dementia village.
METHODS: This is an in-person qualitative semi-structured interview study with people with dementia (PLWD) and Age UK staff. Eligible participants

From an evidentiary point of view, the project Ross Cheit seeks to accomplish in his book, The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology, and the Sexual Abuse of Children, is remarkably complex. I examine the methodology that underlies Cheit's scholarship to assess the strength of his claims. Cheit's work has a strong methodological core in which he asserts the existence of a "Witch-Hunt Narrative" (WHN), public perception that there are "hundreds" of legal cases involving innocent adults wrongly criminally pursued for child sexual abuse. He identifies three foundational cases in this WHN, Mc

BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence that senior day centres can provide rehabilitation, increase activity and support social participation for older adults.

METHODS: The scoping review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Data were collecte

Epidemics caused by dysentery bacteria among children and adults in day-institutions are rare in Denmark. The course of an epidemic of this type is reviewed. Thirty children and six adults went on holiday to a deserted farmer's cottage under primitive conditions in the southern Swedish woods. Immediately prior to this holiday, two of the adults had had serious gastrointestinal infections during a hiking trip in South America. Shigella sonnei was subsequently demonstrated in the stools from a total of 11 children but not in the adults. Three cases of intrafamilial infection occurred. Prior to c
