The definition of advanced maternal age (AMA) is debated, with an increasing risk of complications from the age of 35, but a threshold of 40 years old is adopted internationally to adjust surveillance and set the term of delivery between 39 and 40 weeks. Patients with AMA have more comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes and chronic arterial hypertension. They are at greater risk of miscarriage, -gestational diabetes, hypertensive, thrombotic and psychiatric complications, as well as caesarean sections, placenta previa and placental abruption. Additionally, fetal and neonatal complications can

To assess the effect of maternal age on obstetric intervention and pregnancy outcome, a retrospective study compared obstetric intervention, pregnancy complications and outcome in 73 women of age > 35 years with 471 women of age 20-25 years attending Prince Ali Military Hospital, Jordan from June 1999 to May 2000. Older women were found to have significantly higher rates of medical complications such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Despite significantly increased frequency of large babies, trisomy 21, twin pregnancy and antepartum haemorrhage, overall outcome was satisfactory. We conclu

In order to compare the maternal-fetal outcome in pregnant women of advanced age (bigger than 35 years old) with those smaller than 30 years. 268 pregnant women were studied that went for their control and attention of the childbirth, corresponding 134 patients of more than 35 years and 134 patients between 20-29 years (control group). Cases were excluded if presented confounding variables (smoking, obesity, multiparity and maternal illnesses associated to the pregnancy). Data of maternal-fetal morbimortality were written down both groups and they were analyzed by means of X2 test or Fisher ex

BACKGROUND/AIM: Due to better career opportunities for women and a shift in sex roles, as well as improved reproductive medicine, the age of women who conceive children is rising. A variety of maternal risks and complications that may occur during pregnancy or childbirth in women with advanced maternal age has been examined and reported controversial results. The present study focused on controversial and debatable conclusions regarding the impact of advanced maternal age on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 8,523 patients, who gave singleton birth at the Women's

The age at which women experience their first pregnancy has increased throughout the decades. Pregnancy has an important influence on maternal short- and long-term cardiovascular outcomes. Pregnancy at an advanced maternal age increases maternal risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, placenta previa and caesarian delivery; complications which predict worsened cardiovascular health in later years. Aging also independently increases the risk of cardiovascular disease; therefore, combined risk in women of advanced maternal age may lead to detrimental cardiovascular outcomes later in life. We

A wide range of adverse pregnancy outcomes are associated with women of advanced maternal age (AMA). These include increased risks for miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities, stillbirth, foetal growth restriction, preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus and caesarean section. While a wide body of literature has reported on these risks, varying definitions in both AMA and reported outcomes can make synthesizing the information difficult when counselling an individual women about her specific risks. In this chapter, we discuss the role of AMA on adverse pregnancy outcomes wit

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate pregnancy outcome in women at extremely advanced maternal age (≥ 45 years).
STUDY DESIGN: We compared the condition of women aged ≥ 45 years (n = 177) in a 10:1 ratio (20-29, 30-39, and 40-44 years.). Subgroup analysis compared the condition of women aged 45-49 years with those women aged ≥ 50 years.
RESULTS: The rates of gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive complications were higher for the study group, compared with the whole group (17.0% vs 5.6% and 19.7% vs 4.5%, respectively; P < .001), as was the rate of preterm delivery at

More women are postponing pregnancy into the fourth and fifth decades of life for a variety of reasons. Advanced maternal age, traditionally defined as age more than 35 years, has been associated with increased obstetric morbidity and interventions. In addition, perinatal complications are reported to be higher in this patient population, although recent data point to a more favorable outcome. This article reviews the available literature with special emphasis on antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum complications and perinatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Advanced maternal age is associated with adverse pregnancy and delivery outcomes. Few studies have directly compared outcomes between women of advanced maternal age (35-44 years old) and women of very advanced maternal age (≥45 years old).
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the differences in outcomes between women of advanced maternal age and women of very advanced maternal age.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a large urban US medical center. Demographic and obstetrical data were collected in all patients who delivered within the study window (2012

OBJECTIVE: To investigate outcomes of twin gestations with advanced maternal age (AMA).
STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort of twin gestations cared for by a maternal-fetal medicine faculty practice. Outcomes of patients with AMA (70) and non-AMA (75) were compared. AMA was defined as age > or =35. Analysis including mode of delivery, gestational age at delivery and overall complications was performed. Significance was determined using the chi-square test or the Student's t-test.
RESULTS: The Cesarean rate for AMA was significantly greater compared to non-AMA (80.0% vs. 54.7%; p = 0.001). The ma

INTRODUCTION: Late pregnancies have been a sensitive issue in the society and medical field for many years. The reason for this development could be the increasing use of reproductive techniques, women empowerment and late conceptions. The increased level of education in women, having more responsibilities at work, giving priority to their professional career could be leading to delay in conception and childbearing. Many studies have investigated the effect of advanced maternal age on fetal outcome suggesting higher risk of poor neonatal outcome. Recent studies have debated these outcomes.[123
