Objectives Research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has provided a valuable framework for understanding associations between childhood maltreatment and family dysfunction and later poor health outcomes. However, increasing research suggests the number and types of childhood adversities measured warrants further examination. This study examines ACE exposure among adults who experienced homelessness in childhood, another type of childhood adversity. Methods This cross-sectional, descriptive study used the 2016 South Carolina (SC) Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between adverse childhood experiences and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: This cohort study included individuals who enrolled in a perinatal collaborative mental health care program (COMPASS [the Collaborative Care Model for Perinatal Depression Support Services]) between 2017 and 2021. Participants completed psychosocial self-assessments, including an adverse childhood experiences screen. The primary exposure was adverse childhood experiences measured by the ACE (adverse childhood experience) score, which was evaluated as a dichotomized variable, wi

Children who have been exposed to maltreatment and other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at increased risk for various negative adult health outcomes, including cancer, liver disease, substance abuse, and depression. However, the proximal associations between ACEs and behavioral outcomes during the middle childhood years have been understudied. In addition, many of the ACE studies contain methodological limitations such as reliance on retrospective reports and limited generalizability to populations of lower socioeconomic advantage. The current study uses data from the Fragile Familie

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have lifelong health consequences, yet screening remains challenging. Particularly in clinical settings, brief screeners that could lead to comprehensive assessments may be more feasible. We explore how two ACEs (economic hardship, parental/caregiver divorce/separation) are associated with other ACEs, asthma, and emotional, developmental, or behavioral (EDB) problems.
METHODS: Using the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health, we assessed the associations between ACEs and asthma and EDB problems and calculated sensitivities, specificities and

Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) are known to support healthy development. However, their protective role in the presence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) remains unclear, particularly when accounting for the complex nature of ACEs. Research on this relationship outside the United States is especially limited, restricting the generalizability of findings across cultural contexts. This study examined whether PCEs moderate the relationship between distinct ACE subtypes and mental health outcomes, specifically life satisfaction, depression, and anxiety, among South Korean college stud

OBJECTIVE: To assess associations of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adverse occupational experiences (AOEs) with depression and burnout in US physicians.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from a representative sample survey of US physicians conducted between November 20, 2020, and March 23, 2021, and from a probability-based sample of other US workers. The ACEs, AOEs, burnout, and depression were assessed using previously published measures.
RESULTS: Analyses included data from 1125 of the 3671 physicians (30.6%) who received a mailed survey and 62

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to various behavioral and psychological issues. This study explored the relationship between ACEs and social media addiction (SMA), examining the mediating role of quality of life (QoL) and the moderating effect of occupational status.
METHODS: Overall, 1,247 adults (55.4% females), aged 19 to 65 yr, were recruited through convenience sampling in Kerman, southeast Iran. Validated Persian versions of the ACE-ASF, WHOQOL-BREF, and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale were used. Structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) assessed direct, ind

This study investigates the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and firearm storage practices among adults in firearm-owning households using data from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) across Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia. Findings from multiple logistic regression analyses reveal that relative to respondents with 0 ACEs, 2-3 ACEs (Adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] = 1.48, 95 % Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.12-1.97, p = .007) and 4 + ACEs (aOR = 1.60, 95 % CI = 1.19-2.16, p = .002) were associated with a higher likelihood of storing a firearm

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are an indicator of childhood trauma and are associated with worse adult health outcomes. We examined the association of ACEs and adult stress eating in a largely low-income and racially diverse population. Among 32,209 Southern Community Cohort Study participants, we used multivariable-adjusted logistic regression to estimate the association of ACEs with frequent adult stress eating. Individuals with any ACE were almost 50% more likely to report frequent stress eating as an adult compared to those without ACEs (OR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.38, 1.56), and there was

INTRODUCTION: Alternative measurement approaches for adverse childhood experiences (i.e., count score versus individual adverse childhood experiences measured dichotomously versus individual adverse childhood experiences measured ordinally) can alter the association between adverse childhood experiences and adverse outcomes. This could significantly impact the interpretation of adverse childhood experiences research.
METHODS: Data were collected in 2018 (analyzed in 2020) via Amazon's Mechanical Turk and from people incarcerated in 4 correctional facilities (N=1,451). Included adverse childho

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to the abuse, neglect, and traumatic experiences in childhood that directly affect long-term adolescent and adult health. Understanding the ACE Pyramid and the physiological stress response has guided research toward a better understanding of the long-term mental and physical health consequences from psychological impacts early in life. Trauma-informed care becomes critical for pediatric clinicians to operationalize in practice. The four R's approach-realize, recognize, respond, and resist re-traumatization-can be used by pediatric providers as guidan

Individuals who suffered traumatic events or adverse experiences during their childhood have an increased risk of developing during adulthood physical problems, aggressive behavior, and psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia have higher rates of traumatic experiences during childhood than the general population, and those who suffered multiple traumatic events have an increased risk of disease relapse. The current study aims to determine the prevalence of different types of adverse experiences during childhood among a male patient sample with schizo

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with an increased risk of a variety of diseases, including cancer. However, research has largely ignored how ACEs impact cancer screening, a potential intermediate outcome. As such, the present study examined the association between ACEs and ever and recent use of Papanicolaou (Pap) test, among women aged 21 and older.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analyses used the 2009 Tennessee Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n = 1527) to model odds of ever and recently (within the last 3 years) engaging in Pap tests screening from

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are key risk factors for major depressive disorder (MDD), but their associations with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remain unclear, particularly after accounting for unmeasured confounding, such as shared genetic and familial environmental factors.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between ACEs and TRD while accounting for unmeasured confounding within families.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used a co-twin control design and was based on 2 Swedish Twin Registry cohorts: the Study of Twin Adults: Genes and Envi

BACKGROUND: Past research identified individuals who experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at a higher risk of drug use. There is evidence to suggest that identifying as a man who has sex with other men (MSM) may increase the likelihood of drug use when adverse childhood experiences are prevalent. However, research has not addressed if this association is present in both rural and urban MSM, as other studies found that rurality/urbanity is a key determinant in detrimental outcomes for MSM. The current study uses ACEs as an independent variable in comparing rural and urban MSM's

The influence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which often include childhood exposure to maltreatment and household dysfunction, on health risk behaviors during young adulthood has been widely documented. A vulnerability marker for the increased risky behaviors among young ACEs victims such as impulsivity remains to be explored. The present study investigated how different profiles of ACEs influence impulsivity in young adulthood. Respondents were young people (N = 336; ages 18-25) who were recruited from the community. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify subpopulations of

This study examines whether the items from the original Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) scale can be improved in their prediction of health outcomes by adding some additional widely recognized childhood adversities. The analyses come from the National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence 2014, a telephone survey conducted from August 2013 through April 2014 with a nationally representative sample of 1,949 children and adolescents aged 10-17 and their caregivers who were asked about adversities, physical health conditions and mental health symptoms. The addition of measures of peer vic

OBJECTIVES: Routine preventive dental care is important to overall child health and well-being. However, the experience of adversity in childhood may prevent children from getting adequate preventive care. This study seeks to explore how the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the role of a protective adult may be associated with dental care utilization in childhood.
METHODS: Data from the 2016 South Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (SC BRFSS), which interviews adults eighteen year of age and older, were used in this study. Dental care utilization in chil
