Eleven novel Gram-stain-positive, catalase- and oxidase-negative coccal bacterial isolates recovered mostly from the wounds of patients located in three Canadian provinces were extensively studied. Phenotypic analysis and phylogenetic analysis based on both the 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequence place them in the family Aerococcaceae and differentiate them from genera in the closest families Enterococcaceae and Carnobacteriaceae in the order Lactobacillales. The G+C content of the isolates was on average 42.15 mol% with genome sizes ranging from 1.87 to 2.04 Mb. The average nucleotide ide

Nine strains of two Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, catalase-, oxidase- and urease-negative coccoid species, designated as zg-252T, zg-1578, zg-B36, zg-ZUI334, and zg-1292T, zg-A91, zg-BR9, zg-BR22 and zg-BR33, were isolated from the trachea of Marmota himalayana. The nine strains grew optimally at 37 °C, pH 7.0 and 0.5% NaCl. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the two novel type strains were most closely related to each other, with low similarity to known species in the family Aerococcaceae. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene and genome suggested that

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder, accompanied by motor deficits as well as gastrointestinal dysfunctions. Recent studies have proved that the disturbance of gut microbiota and metabolism contributes to the pathogenesis of PD; however, the mechanisms underlying these effects have yet to be elucidated. Curcumin (CUR) has been reported to provide neuroprotective effects on neurological disorders and modulate the gut flora in intestinal-related diseases. Therefore, it is of significant interest to investigate whether CUR could exert a protective effect on

High incidences of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes have been reported on smear cheeses, and despite increased hygiene efforts, this incidence has remained stable in recent years. Applying antilisterial strains may increase the safety of smear cheeses. To find and test antilisterial strains, we inoculated fresh soft cheeses from nine dairies with the surrogate species Listeria innocua and assessed its growth under standardized ripening conditions. Acetic acid at day 23 (r = -0.66), lactose in fresh cheese (r = -0.63), and glucose at day 10 (r = -0.62), as well as seven amplicon se

Globicatella sanguinis is catalase-negative, alpha-hemolytic, nonmotile, facultative anaerobic grampositive cocci, identified as a new species in 1992. Since the colony morphology in blood agar and microscopic appearance resembles streptococci, it is thought that some of the isolates previously identified in the Streptococcus viridans group were G.sanguinis species. G.sanguinis has been isolated from various clinical specimens, its species identification and antibiotic susceptibility have been tested since the year it was identified. Clinical specimens in which it is isolated include various m

The vaginal bacteria are critical for neonatal immunity, as well as for further infections and pathologies in foals and mares during the postpartum period. The vaginal microbiota was examined in six mares. Swabs were taken from the vaginal caudal wall within 12 h after natural delivery. Next-generation sequencing was used to analyze the composition of the vaginal microbiota and identify shared bacterial taxa. The post-delivery vaginal microbiome of mares included 18 identified families, 25 genera, and 33 species. The core families of the mares' microbiome comprised Leptotrichiaceae (21.72%), P

A 55-year-old lady with bamboo stick injury to her right eye suffered corneal laceration with retained wooden foreign body in the anterior chamber. In the first-sitting corneal laceration repair, lens aspiration with foreign body removal was done. Two days later, she developed signs and symptoms of endophthalmitis for which pars plana vitrectomy with intravitreal antibiotic injection was done. Smear examination of vitreous sample revealed the presence of Gram-positive cocci in pairs and short chains on Gram's stain on the same day. Confluent white, moist, and alpha-hemolyticus bacterial coloni

BACKGROUND: Pyelonephritis is one of the most serious bacterial illnesses during childhood. Gram-negative organisms account for up to 90% of the cases. Gram-positive bacteria are uncommon causes of urinary tract infections, and only a few cases caused by Facklamia hominis have been reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A five-year-old girl with tracheostomy and gastrostomy and past medical history of congenital lymphangioma presented with a two-week history of with intermittent fever, frequent urination, and vesical tenesmus. Diagnosis of pyelonephritis was made. Urine culture report

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) is one of the most frequent routine procedures in urology. Because of the semisterile environment, postoperative infections, including sepsis, are a common complication, with Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis or Enterococcus faecalis as frequently isolated pathogens. Facklamia hominis is a gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, alpha-hemolytic, catalase-negative coccus that was first described in 1997. To date, only a few cases of infectious complications have been described. We report the first case of postoperati

There is a growing evidence suggesting the association of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and cognitive impairment. In this study we evaluated the possible involvement of gut microbiota in the cognitive impairments mediated by VDD and investigated the effects of pharmacological treatment with the oxazoline derivative of the aliamide palmitoylethanolamide, 2-Pentadecyl-2-oxazoline (PEA-OXA). Mice were submitted to behavioural, biochemical and electrophysiological analysis to assess whether their vitamin D status affected cognitive performance together with gut microbiota composition. In VDD mice we

Facklamia species are Gram-positive, catalase-negative cocci within the family Aerococcaceae. Historically misidentified as streptococci or enterococci due to phenotypic similarity and conventional biochemical testing limitations, their clinical significance remains incompletely defined. This narrative review synthesizes the current literature on the microbiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic challenges, and antimicrobial susceptibilities of Facklamia infections, with emphasis on urogynecologic relevance. A structured literature search identified peer-reviewed reports of m

UNLABELLED: Plasma trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is associated with coronary atherosclerotic plaque and cardiovascular disease risk, but associations between gut microbes in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and post-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (post-STEMI) events are unknown. We investigated associations between gut microbial taxa and systemic TMAO levels and the possible TMAO contribution to incident post-STEMI cardiovascular events.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients, including 30 with unstable angina pectoris (UAP), 30 post-STEMI and 30 healthy controls, were enrolled

In this study we examined potential associations of HPV infection with the cervical microbiota. Cervical samples were collected from 87 HIV-seronegative reproductive-age Black South African women. Microbiota were characterized by Illumina sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Thirty seven (42.5%) and 30 (34.5%) of the women had prevalent HPV and high-risk (HR)-HPV, respectively. Only 23 women (26.4%) had cervical microbiota dominated by a single Lactobacillus species (L. crispatus (2/87 (2.3%)), L. jensenii (2/87 (2.3%)), and L. iners (19/87 (21.8%)). Th

Cancer represents a major disease burden worldwide. Despite continuous advances obtained in medical therapies recently, resistance to standard drugs and adverse effects still represent important causes of therapeutic failure. There is growing evidence that the gut microbiota can affect the response to chemo- and immunotherapeutic drugs by modulating efficacy and/or toxicity, and diet is the most important factor affecting the gut microbiota. In this study, we assessed the auxiliary antitumor effects of immunomodulatory fungal proteins from Hericium erinaceus (HEP) administered with the chemoth

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are iconic Australian marsupials currently threatened by several processes, including infectious diseases and ecological disruption. Infection with Chlamydia pecorum, is considered a key driver of population decline. The clinical sign of 'wet bottom', a staining of the rump associated with urinary incontinence, is often caused by chlamydial urinary tract infections. However, wet bottom has been recorded in koalas free of C. pecorum, suggesting other causative agents in those individuals. We used 16S rRNA diversity profiling to investigate the microbiome of the u

Gram-positive catalase-negative cocci (GPCNCs) are significant components of the genital microbiota in sheep and goats. However, characterizing them can be difficult due to overlapping culture features and the limited information on their susceptibility to antibiotics. In this study, 97 foreskin and 13 vaginal swabs were investigated using a culturomic approach. Of 110 animals, 76 (69.09 %) hosted GPCNCs, including strains from Streptococcaceae (37, 33.64 %), Aerococcaceae (30, 27.27 %), Enterococcaceae (6, 5.45 %) and other minor species. With increasing antimicrobial resistance rates in live
