Aeromonas salmonicida (A. salmonicida) is a facultative Gram-negative bacillus, inhabiting in water. It is a common source of furunculosis and septicemia in fish. Report on the human infection with this organism is rare. A male farmer referred with weakness and intermittent fever. He had cardiac valves' regurgitation due to fever with rheumatic heart disease. He had a history of swimming in well water. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed a mobile mass of 1.3 × 0.9 cm attached to the mitral valve chordae, suggestive of a vegetation. Aeromonas salmonicida was isolated from the blood. A

An ADP-ribosylating toxin named Aeromonas salmonicida exoenzyme T (AexT) in A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida, the etiological agent of furunculosis in fish, was characterized. Gene aexT, encoding toxin AexT, was cloned and characterized by sequence analysis. AexT shows significant sequence similarity to the ExoS and ExoT exotoxins of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and to the YopE cytotoxin of different Yersinia species. The aexT gene was detected in all of the 12 A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strains tested but was absent from all other Aeromonas species. Recombinant AexT produced in Escherichia

Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida causes furunculosis, a major infection that affects fish farms worldwide. We isolated phage vB_AsaM_LPM4 (LPM4) from a diseased fish. Based on its DNA sequence, LPM4 is identical to the uncharacterized Prophage 3, a prophage present mostly in North American A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida isolates that bear the genomic island AsaGEI2a. Prophage 3 and AsaGEI2a are inserted side by side in the bacterial chromosome. The LPM4/Prophage 3 sequence is similar to that of other prophages found in various members of the genus Aeromonas. LPM4 specifically infect

BACKGROUND: Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a Gram-negative bacterium that is the causative agent of furunculosis, a bacterial septicaemia of salmonid fish. While other species of Aeromonas are opportunistic pathogens or are found in commensal or symbiotic relationships with animal hosts, A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida causes disease in healthy fish. The genome sequence of A. salmonicida was determined to provide a better understanding of the virulence factors used by this pathogen to infect fish.
RESULTS: The nucleotide sequences of the A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida A449 c

We report a case of a 55-year-old female who presented with pain, redness, and profound visual loss in her right eye 2 weeks after cataract surgery. An ophthalmic examination showed light perception vision, corneal edema with severe anterior chamber reaction and hypopyon, exudative membranes on the anterior lens surface, and dense vitreous exudates. Under the impression of acute postoperative exogenous endophthalmitis, immediate pars plana vitrectomy with culture of vitreous aspirate and intravitreal antibiotic injections were performed. Bacterial growth was observed on culture plates and brot

Mutants with multiple low-level antibiotic resistance were isolated from virulent wild-type Aeromonas salmonicida strains exposed to a low concentration of any one of several low-molecular-mass (approximately 635 daltons or less) antibiotics. Multiple resistance was toward beta-lactam compounds (penicillin G, ampicillin, cloxacillin), quinolones (flumequine, oxolinic acid, nalidixic acid), tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, and novobiocin. Susceptibilities of the mutants toward several higher-molecular-mass (greater than 700 daltons) hydrophobic or polycationic antibiotics such as rifampin, eryth

Turbot aquaculture production is an important economic activity in several countries around the world; nonetheless, the incidence of diseases, such furunculosis, caused by the etiological agent A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida, is responsible for important losses to this industry worldwide. Given this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate early immune responses in turbot (S. maximus L.) following infection with A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida. For this, 72 fish were individually weighed and randomly distributed into 6 tanks in a circulating seawater system. For the bacterial challenge,

Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a major bacterial pathogen of salmonids in aquaculture, and bacteriophage therapy could provide an alternative to antibiotics for its control. Bacteriophage infection of this Gram-negative bacterium begins at the cell surface and involves interactions with outer membrane components including lipopolysaccharides and surface structures such as the A-layer. Although these interactions influence phage adsorption, their impact on bacterial membrane organization remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated membrane dynamics in three strains differing i

In contrast to other teleosts, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) has an expanded repertoire of MHC-I and TLR components, but lacks the MHC-II, the invariant chain/CD74, and CD4+ T cell response, essential for production of antibodies and prevention of bacterial infectious diseases. The mechanisms by which G. morhua fight bacterial infections are not well understood. Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a recurrent pathogen in cultured and wild fish, and has been reported in Atlantic cod. Macrophages are some of the first responders to bacterial infection and the link between innate and adapti

Dietary thiaminase I is a cause of thiamine deficiency in animals. The physiological significance of thiaminase in the organisms containing this enzyme is not known, nor are the factors causing variation in their thiaminase activity. Tests were performed to evaluate the effect a pathogen might have on thiaminase activity in fish, when analyzed both with a cosubstrate added (CATA tests) and no cosubstrate added (NCATA tests). Pyridine is known as a cosubstrate specific for thiaminase I activity that does not accelerate thiaminase II activity. Crucian carp Carassius carassius known to harbor thi

A bacteria-parasite challenge model was used to study the role of sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda), as a vector of Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida. Three hypotheses were tested: (i) L. salmonis can acquire A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida via water bath exposure; (ii) L. salmonis can acquire the bacteria via parasitizing infected Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar; and (iii) L. salmonis can transmit the bacteria to naïve Atlantic salmon via parasitism. Adult L. salmonis exposed to varying A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida suspensions (10(1) -10(7) cells mL(-1) ) for 1.0, 3.0 o

Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a pathogenic bacterium responsible for furunculosis in salmonids. Following an outbreak of furunculosis, the infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it is common to observe ineffective treatment due to antibiotic resistance. This bacterium has a wide variety of plasmids responsible for this resistance. Among them, pRAS3 carries a tetracycline resistance gene. Several variants of this plasmid have been discovered over the years (pRAS3-3432 and pRAS3.1 to 3.4). During the present study, two new variants of the plasmid pRAS3 were identified (pRAS

High-throughput genomic sequencing has helped to reveal the plasmidome of Aeromonas salmonicida. This literature review provides an overview of A. salmonicida's rich plasmidome by presenting all the plasmids identified so far, addressing their biological importance and the functional links between them. The plasmids of A. salmonicida, especially those bearing antibiotic resistance genes, can provide clues about interactions of this species with other pathogens (animals and humans), as is the case for pRAS3-3432 and Chlamydia suis or pSN254b and Salmonella enterica. In addition to antibiotic re

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs that can regulate the immune responses during pathogen infection. Aeromonas salmonicida (A. salmonicida) subsp. salmonicida is the causative agent of furunculosis in salmon and trout. To identify the miRNAs and investigate the specific miRNAs in rainbow trout upon A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida infection, we performed high throughput sequencing using the spleens of rainbow trout infected with and without an A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida clinical isolate. A total of 381 known miRNAs and 926 novel miRNAs were identified. Eleven known

Aeromonas salmonicida is one of the major threats to world aquaculture, causing fish furunculosis and high mortality rates in cultured fish, particularly salmonids. Although Aeromonas spp. is a thoroughly studied pathogen, little is known regarding aeromoniasis in sturgeons. After a mortality outbreak, four juvenile sturgeons (Acipenser baerii) were submitted for autopsy and tissue samples were collected for histopathological and microbiological studies. The external examination revealed size heterogenicity, skin hyperpigmentation and reduced body condition of sturgeons. Within the abdominal c

This study reports the polyphasic identification, characterization of virulence potential, and antibiotic susceptibility of Aeromonas salmonicida subspecies salmonicida COFCAU_AS, isolated from an aquaculture system in India. The physiological, biochemical, 16s rRNA gene sequencing and PAAS PCR test identified the strain as Aeromonas salmonicida. The MIY PCR tests established the subspecies as 'salmonicida'. The in vitro tests showed the isolated bacterium as haemolytic with casein, lipid, starch, and gelatin hydrolysis activity, indicating its pathogenic attributes. It also showed the ability

The bacterium Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a common pathogen in fish farms worldwide. Since the antibiotic resistance of this bacterial species is on the increase, it is important to have a broader view on this issue. In the present study, we tested the presence of known plasmids conferring multi-drug resistance as well as antibiotic resistance genes by a PCR approach in 100 Canadian A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida isolates. Our study highlighted the dominance of the conjugative pSN254b plasmid, which confers multi-drug resistance. We also identified a new multi-drug plasmid n
