Neuropeptides in pelvic afferent pathways.

Neurochemical and pharmacological experiments have raised the possibility that several neuropeptides including, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), peptide histidine isoleucine amide (PHI), substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neurokinin A, cholecystokinin (CCK) and opioid peptides may be transmitters in afferent pathways to the pelvic viscera. These substances are widely distributed in: 1) nerve fibers in the pelvic organs, 2) visceral afferent neurons in the lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia and 3) at sites of afferent termination in the spinal cord. Double staining immuno

Afferent pathways for the cough reflex.

Cough is most often a reflex act elicited by the stimulation of nervous receptors in the respiratory tract. The most important tussigenic areas are at the level of the larynx and the more distal portion of the trachea with its bifurcation. Laryngeal rapidly adapting receptors with myelinated fibres are promptly activated by tussigenic stimuli, but it is unlikely that they are the only ones responsible for laryngeal coughing. In fact, some evidence supports the involvement of laryngeal C-fibre receptors. Cough in response to inhalation of aqueous aerosols containing low chloride concentrations

Evaluation of afferent pain pathways in adrenomyeloneuropathic patients.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with adrenomyeloneuropathy may have dysfunctions of visual, auditory, motor and somatosensory pathways. We thought on examining the nociceptive pathways by means of laser evoked potentials (LEPs), to obtain additional information on the pathophysiology of this condition. METHODS: In 13 adrenomyeloneuropathic patients we examined LEPs to leg, arm and face stimulation. Normative data were obtained from 10 healthy subjects examined in the same experimental conditions. We also examined brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), pattern reversal full-field visual evoked pote

Afferent visual pathways in multiple sclerosis: a review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that involves inflammation and demyelination at multiple sites and causes a wide variety of clinical presentations with variable neurological deficits. The visual pathways are frequently involved with either visual or motor dysfunction. Optic neuritis (ON) is one the most common and best characterized presentations of the disease, but there are many other manifestations depending on the site of the lesion. Eyes that have never had ON show slow progressive loss of axons and retinal ganglion cells. Previously unrecognized optic r

PAIN MECHANISMS - A REVIEW: II. Afferent pain pathways.

This paper reviews some major advances in our understanding of the organization of afferent pain pathways, and relates these and other findings to the limited success rate achieved by various surgical interventions used in the treatment of chronic intractable pain. First-order pain afferents, many of which use the transmitter substance P, may enter the spinal cord via both the dorsal and ventral roots. After terminating superficially in the dorsal horn, information may apparently ascend to higher centres via numerous pathways, some of which are contralateral some ipsilateral. The preferred rou

Bowditch Lecture. Renal afferent inputs to ascending spinal pathways.

Studies of renal afferent fibers and their functions have continued since the work of Pines in 1959 (Fiziol. Zh. SSSR Im. I M Sechenova 45: 1339-1347, 1959). The kidney contains mechanoreceptors and chemoreceptors that appear to have two major functions. First, renal mechano- and chemoreceptors evoke a variety of renorenal reflexes, while more global cardiovascular reflexes are primarily evoked by renal mechanoreceptors. A second function of renal afferent fibers is to cause the pain of renal disease. Recent studies suggest that renal afferent fibers may also regulate secretion of vasopressin

[Afferent pupillary disorders in postchiasmal lesions of the visual pathways].

Classically, the pupillary pathway is considered as a simple reflex arc comprising retinal ganglion cells, midbrain interneurons, oculomotor nerve and short ciliary nerves. However, there are some specialties in the construction of the pupillary pathways that have to be kept in mind when dealing with diseases involving pupillary disorders. This may help to localise lesions. Additionally, studies in patients with lesions of the retrogeniculate pathways have shown that pupillary disorders are possible even with lesions not involving the classical reflex arc. The pupil is therefore not only contr

Genioglossus muscle responses to upper airway pressure changes: afferent pathways.

The afferent pathway of an upper airway reflex in which genioglossus muscle electromyographic (GG EMG) activity is influenced by pharyngeal pressure changes was investigated in 20 anesthetized rabbits. We took advantage of the fact that the upper airway was separated into two compartments by pharyngeal closure occurring when the animals breathe through a tracheostomy. This allowed pressure to be delivered selectively either to the nose and nasopharynx or to the larynx and hypopharynx. Midcervical vagotomy did not eliminate the GG EMG response to pressure stimuli. On the other hand high cervica

Decoding Overlapping Lower-Limb Afferent Pathways from Human Epidural Spinal Recordings.

Restoration of dynamic motor function following neurological injury increasingly relies on adaptive neuroprostheses, which require real-time sensory feedback to continuously adjust to a user's physical state. However, it remains unknown whether distinct afferent activity can even be decoded from highly overlapping, volume-conducted epidural fields. This challenge is particularly pronounced in the lumbosacral enlargement, where common fibular (CFN) and tibial nerve (TN) afferents converge extensively, producing highly similar cord dorsum potential (CDP) topographies. Here, we demonstrate for th

Phox2b controls the development of peripheral chemoreceptors and afferent visceral pathways.

We report that the afferent relays of visceral (cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory) reflexes, differentiate under the control of the paired-like homeobox gene Phox2b: the neural crest-derived carotid body, a chemosensor organ, degenerates in homozygous mutants, as do the three epibranchial placode-derived visceral sensory ganglia (geniculate, petrosal and nodose), while their central target, the nucleus of the solitary tract, which integrates all visceral information, never forms. These data establish Phox2b as an unusual 'circuit-specific' transcription factor devoted to the formation

Cochleovestibular afferent pathways of trapezius muscle responses to clicks in human.

Brief intense clicks cause short-latency cervical muscles microcontractions which are supposed to be of vestibular origin. Averaging these microcontractions allows myogenic vestibular evoked potentials (MVEP) to be obtained. MVEP from the trapezius muscles were investigated in normal subjects, cochleovestibular nerve-damaged patients and patients with a vestibular or a cochlear lesion. Muscular responses were recorded on right and left trapezius by averaging from surface electrodes following right and left monaural 100 dB hearing level click stimulation. In normal subjects, responses to monaur

Satiety induced by bile acids is mediated via vagal afferent pathways.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the role and the pathways used by bile acid receptor TGR5 in transmitting satiety signals. We showed TGR5 colocalized with cholecystokinin type A (CCK-A) receptors in a subpopulation of rat nodose ganglia (NG) neurons. Intra-arterial injection of deoxycholic acid (DCA) dose-dependently increased firing rate in NG while a subthreshold dose of DCA and CCK-8 increased firing rates synergistically. TGR5-specific agonist oleanolic acid induced NG neuronal firing in a dose-dependent manner. However, the same units did not respond to GW4064, a nuclear receptor-s

Xenin Augments Duodenal Anion Secretion via Activation of Afferent Neural Pathways.

Xenin-25, a neurotensin (NT)-related anorexigenic gut hormone generated mostly in the duodenal mucosa, is believed to increase the rate of duodenal ion secretion, because xenin-induced diarrhea is not present after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Because the local effects of xenin on duodenal ion secretion have remained uninvestigated, we thus examined the neural pathways underlying xenin-induced duodenal anion secretion. Intravenous infusion of xenin-8, a bioactive C-terminal fragment of xenin-25, dose dependently increased the rate of duodenal HCO3- secretion in perfused duodenal loops of

[The effect of afferent subcortical conduction pathways on speech function status].

The combined analysis of neuropsychologic, electroencephalographic, and neurologic data as well as of the results of computerized and emission-computerized tomography in patients with ischemic stroke during the neurorehabilitation period made it possible to ascertain the correlation between the lesions of subcortical pathways and speech disorders. Besides the intracortical, the cortico-subcortical connections of the left associative cortex were demonstrated. The semantic aphasia was shown to be always associated with the dynamic aphasia; and each of these forms could be either primary or secon

Sodium oligomannate activates the enteroendocrine-vagal afferent pathways in APP/PS1 mice.

Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) and vagal afferent neurons constitute functional sensory units of the gut, which have been implicated in bottom-up modulation of brain functions. Sodium oligomannate (GV-971) has been shown to improve cognitive functions in murine models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and recently approved for the treatment of AD patients in China. In this study, we explored whether activation of the EECs-vagal afferent pathways was involved in the therapeutic effects of GV-971. We found that an enteroendocrine cell line RIN-14B displayed spontaneous calcium oscillations due to TRPA1-

Modulation of spinal circuits following phase-dependent electrical stimulation of afferent pathways.

Objective.Peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) of afferent pathways is a tool commonly used to induce neural adaptations in some neural disorders such as pathological tremor or stroke. However, the neuromodulatory effects of stimulation interventions synchronized with physiological activity (closed-loop strategies) have been scarcely researched in the upper-limb. Here, the short-term spinal effects of a 20-minute stimulation protocol where afferent pathways were stimulated with a closed-loop strategy named selective and adaptive timely stimulation (SATS) were explored in 11 healthy subjects
