Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is endemic in humans and domestic animals in eastern Africa. All the species of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato complex have been reported in this region except for E. equinus, possibly due to the small number of studies involving equids. This study reports the frequency of different Echinococcus species in donkeys from eastern Africa. A total of 5961 donkeys were examined during meat inspection in 3 slaughterhouses in Kenya. Identification of Echinococcus spp. was achieved through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism and sequenci

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is among the most neglected of the tropical diseases, afflicting the poorest of the poor. In eastern Africa, VL causes at least 4000 deaths annually, a loss of approximately 385,000 disability-adjusted life years. Due to the chronicity of underlying causes, it is likely that the caseload will increase in the foreseeable future. While efforts should be pursued to develop novel case management and prevention tools, several effective interventions already exist but are rarely deployed. Funds are needed now to procure commodities and strengthen health systems, so that e

Some information has been documented on the epidemiology of neurocysticercosis in Eastern and Southern Africa through the monitoring of hospital-based patients with neurocysticercosis, community-based serological surveys of particular socio-economic groups of people and surveys of porcine cysticercosis. Studies have revealed that non-pork eaters have as great a chance of infection as a pork eater, the Xhosa-speaking people of the Eastern Cape Province have the highest prevalence of cysticercosis/taeniosis in South Africa probably due to the common practice of free-range pig farming and the lac

Dermatophytosis is currently a disease of global importance and a public health burden. It is caused by dermatophytes, which attack and grow on dead animal keratin. Dermatophytes belong to three genera, namely, Epidermophyton, Microsporum, and Trichophyton. The predominant clinical forms and causative agents vary from one region of the world to another. Poor socioeconomic status, high population densities, and poor sanitary conditions are some of the factors responsible for the high prevalence of dermatophytosis in many developing countries, which include countries in southern and eastern Afri

In 1988, the World Health Assembly established the goal of eradicating poliomyelitis by the year 2000. Commitment to this goal and to the strategies that have proven effective in other regions was reaffirmed in 1995 by the African Regional Health Committee and in 1996 by heads of state attending the Organization of African Unity Summit. These strategies include 1) achieving and maintaining high vaccination coverage among children aged < 1 year with at least three doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) through routine vaccination services; 2) establishing effective epidemiologic and laboratory

The evolution of C4 grassland ecosystems in eastern Africa has been intensely studied because of the potential influence of vegetation on mammalian evolution, including that of our own lineage, hominins. Although a handful of sparse vegetation records exists from middle and early Miocene terrestrial fossil sites, there is no comprehensive record of vegetation through the Neogene. Here we present a vegetation record spanning the Neogene and Quaternary Periods that documents the appearance and subsequent expansion of C4 grasslands in eastern Africa. Carbon isotope ratios from terrestrial plant w

BACKGROUND: In East Africa, bovine schistosomiasis, although common, is poorly appreciated and managed, detrimentally impacting upon livestock health. In certain settings, bovine schistosomiasis may be involved in zoonotic transmission of human schistosomiasis. Better disease management and more effective control of bovine schistosomiasis require the development of sensitive and specific serological screening and rapid diagnostic tools.
METHODS: We developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for Schistosoma bovis detection in cattle, utilizing nine shortlisted potential diagnostic

Visceral leishmaniasis is a vector-borne, protozoan disease with severe public health implications. Following the successful implementation of an elimination programme in South Asia, there is now a concerted endeavour to replicate these efforts in Eastern Africa based on the five essential elimination pillars of case management, integrated vector management, effective surveillance, social mobilisation and operational research. This article highlights how key social determinants (SD) of health (poverty, sociocultural factors and gender, housing and clustering, migration and the healthcare syste

Boomslang (Dispholidus typus) bites are rare in South Africa. This snake's venom is known to be potently haemotoxic, producing a consumptive coagulopathy through the activation of clotting factors II, X, and possibly IX. Monovalent Boomslang antivenom, produced by the South African Vaccine Producers, is highly effective in treating patients who present with haemotoxic envenomation. The majority of health care centres in South Africa do not stock this antivenom due to cost concerns and because envenomation from this snake is so infrequent; this may have lethal consequences for a patient present

UNLABELLED: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation, a history of recurrent/persistent respiratory symptoms that vary in intensity over time, and variable airflow obstruction. Longitudinal studies examining asthma control patterns and predictors of clinical outcomes in African populations remain scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify treatment response, asthma control, and its predictors in Eastern African cohort.
METHODS: A multicountry prospective cohort study was conducted in three specialized hospitals in Africa. Asthmatic pat

Brucellosis, rabies, salmonellosis, anthrax and hydatidosis are among the main zoonotic diseases which constitute a threat to human health and welfare. Surveillance, prevention and control of such zoonoses and related food-borne diseases are problems of considerable magnitude. Despite their obvious importance, relatively few systematic control efforts have been made by national authorities. Major constraints include the scarcity of public health veterinarians and related sub-professional staff to plan and implement adequate surveillance and control of zoonoses, and the lack of appropriate legi

Investigations were carried out in the area of a human plague outbreak in March 1982 at Coega in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Trapping revealed that rodent populations were high owing primarily to a population increase of the four-striped mouse, Rhabdomys pumilio. Flea populations were low and had been declining in the eastern Cape Province since October 1981. The results of a serological survey from March to October 1982 showed haemagglutinating antibody to Yersinia pestis in 0.35% of 5938 dog sera and 0.53% of 1132 small mammal sera. Plague antibody was detected in two small ma

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic infection caused by the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. It was discovered over 100 years ago and is credited as the most successful parasitic organism worldwide, able to infect and multiply in all warm blooded animals including an estimated 2.3 billion people. Toxoplasmosis is asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals. Infection in the developing fetus and immunocompromised individuals can cause severe clinical disease. Toxoplasmosis is also a major cause of reproductive failure in livestock. The economic impact of toxoplasmosis is believed to be substantia

BACKGROUND: Every day, over 5000 stillbirths and more than 6000 newborn deaths are estimated to occur worldwide, the majority in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Estimates, however, rely on data that might underestimate these deaths. Further, outside major categories such as preterm birth, infection, and complications at delivery, little is known about the causes of death for newborns and even less for stillbirths.
OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize evidence on the incidence, causes, and risk factors for perinatal mortality in East Africa to inform publ

The highest burden of diseases worldwide is in low- and middle-income countries, but due to lack of capacity and inadequate infrastructure, research output from these countries is unable to address existing and emerging challenges in health care. Oral health research has particularly been hampered by low prioritization, resulting in insufficient development of this sector. There is an urgent need for research correlating oral health to upstream social and environmental determinants and promoting the common risk factor approach for prevention of noncommunicable diseases. Population-wide prevent

At least 26 members of the Simulium damnosum Theobald complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) are known from eastern Africa, most of which are assumed to be non-anthropophilic and some are restricted to small areas of endemicity. Their discovery was based on polytene chromosome inversion polymorphisms and since then they have been cited as cytological entities, but, in many cases, with inadequate descriptions (e.g. without illustrations of the chromosomes). The present distribution, taxonomy and vector identity have been re-evaluated during the last decade in conjunction with ongoing onchocerciasis cont
