CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES: In July 2009, WHO and partners were notified of a large outbreak of unknown illness, including deaths, among African Union (AU) soldiers in Mogadishu. Illnesses were characterized by peripheral edema, dyspnea, palpitations, and fever. Our objectives were to determine the cause of the outbreak, and to design and recommend control strategies.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The illness was defined as acute onset of lower limb edema, with dyspnea, chest pain, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or headache. Investigations in Nairobi and Mogadishu included c

OBJECTIVES: To compare and describe match injury profiles between female South African youth and senior rugby union players.
DESIGN: A prospective cohort study on injuries in female rugby union players from National U16, U18, U20, and Senior competitions.
METHODS: Team doctors and researchers recorded time-loss match injuries during South African national 2023 and 2024 women's rugby competitions. Poisson regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios, comparing injury rates between age groups.
RESULTS: A total of 261 time-loss injuries were recorded. The Senior age group had 40% lowe

Sequences of eruption of teeth and union of epiphyses determined for three species of African Cercopithecinae. These sequences are highly scalable and are highly comparable between among the species. Some sex differences in sequence were found within each species. The sequences of epiphyseal union in these species of Old World monkeys are very similar to published sequences in New World monkeys and other groups of higher primates. It appears that there is a single pattern common to the Anthropoidea as a whole.

As the world has a history of vaccine nationalism, especially during the 2009 Swine flu pandemic, the COVAX alliance, a globally collaborated mechanism, was created by World Health Organization (WHO), GAVI, and UNICEF to address the inequity of COVID-19 vaccines. One of the primary aims of this alliance was to deliver vaccines to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which otherwise have less or no capacity to access vaccines from the open market. It is crucial to explore the contribution of COVAX in bridging the gap in equity, accessibility, and affordability of COVID-19 vaccines between

BACKGROUND: The majority of injuries in rugby union occur during tackle events. The mechanisms and causes of these injuries are well established in senior rugby union.
PURPOSE: To use information from an injury database and assess video footage of tackle-related injuries in youth rugby union matches to identify environmental factors and mechanisms that are potentially confounding to these injuries.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiological study.
METHODS: Injury surveillance was conducted at the under-18 Craven Week rugby tournament. Tackle-related injury information was used to identify in

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated new vaccine development. Limited safety data necessitated robust global safety surveillance to accurately identify and promptly communicate potential safety issues. The African Union Smart Safety Surveillance (AU-3S) program established the Joint Signal Management (JSM) group to support identification of potential vaccine safety concerns in five pilot countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa), accounting for approximately 35% of the African population.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to provide an overview of the JSM group's role in

BACKGROUND: Despite declines in deaths from rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in Africa over the past 30 years, it remains a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality on the continent. We present an investment case for interventions to prevent and manage RHD in the African Union (AU).
METHODS: We created a cohort state-transition model to estimate key outcomes in the disease process, including cases of pharyngitis from group A streptococcus, episodes of acute rheumatic fever (ARF), cases of RHD, heart failure, and deaths. With this model, we estimated the impact of scaling up interven

Hypertension has always been regarded as a disease of affluence but this has changed drastically in the last two decades with average blood pressures now higher in Africa than in Europe and USA and the prevalence increasing among poor sections of society. We have conducted a literature search on PubMed on a broad range of topics regarding hypertension in Africa, including data collection from related documents from World Health Organization and other relevant organizations that are available in this field. We have shared the initial results and drafts with international specialists in the cont

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 42% of children are at risk for vitamin A deficiency, and control of vitamin A deficiency will prevent more than 600,000 child deaths annually. In the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), an estimated 54.3% of preschool-age children are vitamin A deficient and 13% of pregnant women have night blindness.
OBJECTIVE: To project the achievements of this West African coalition.
METHODS: This article documents the achievements, challenges, and lessons learned associated with the development of a public-private partnership to fortify vegetab

BACKGROUND: The African continent has long faced fragmented regulatory systems, resulting in delayed access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medical products. To address these challenges, the African Medicines Regulatory Harmonisation (AMRH) Programme was launched in 2009 by the African Union, laying the groundwork for the establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA). The AMA represents one of the most significant continental developments to harmonize regulatory practices, improve access to quality-assured medical products, and strengthen public health systems across Africa.

The West African Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic of 2013-2016 was the largest on record, severely affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and overwhelming public health systems. Following Nigeria's successful containment of its domestic EVD outbreak in 2014, the African Union Support to Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA) mission deployed 196 Nigerian public health professionals, the largest single-nation contingent, to Liberia and Sierra Leone. This commentary reflects on that deployment, highlighting operational contributions, innovations, and the enduring impact of the mission on

In December 2017, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) emerged in Burundi (East Africa) and rapidly spread to five provinces (Gitega, Kirundo, Mwaro, Muramvya and Karuzi) in the country, causing severe disease and killing more than 4,000 goats in the province of Gitega alone. An initial outbreak investigation was conducted in December 2017 by the Burundi Government Veterinary Services and samples were collected for laboratory confirmation. A competitive Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (cELISA: Chinese Patent No. ZL201210278970.9) supplied by the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute was used to

The aardvark is popular in many zoological gardens in the European Union. These creatures are nocturnal, and aardvarks in the wild are known to walk distances of 4 km to 7 km per night. Despite what is known about their biology, most aardvarks are kept in zoological gardens in indoor enclosures with little space for movement. This lack of space leads to a tendency toward obesity and compromised welfare. With their wide distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa, aardvarks are perceived as thermophilic nonhuman animals. Nevertheless, some records suggest they may be able to adapt to colder climates and

The problems in surveillance of sexually transmitted disease (STD) in Africa are numerous and are based mainly on socioeconomic barriers. Policies for controlling STD are either inadequate or nonexistent in many African countries. Gonococci are becoming increasingly insusceptible to penicillin and other drugs because of widespread use of inadequate therapy. Gonorrhea is recognized as the major pathogen of pelvic inflammatory disease in Africa. The magnitude of the PID problem is so great that current efforts are directed at case treatment rather than surveillance and control. The formation of

The past 20 years have seen the development of bait technologies that enable livestock keepers to control tsetse flies and, hence, African trypanosomiasis. The techniques have, however, often been applied on too small a scale, without due regard to the realities of tsetse population dynamics. The consequent lack of progress has led to calls for a return to large-scale operations. Analysis of successful programmes to control or eliminate tsetse in southern Africa suggests that the combined use of recently improved bait methods and insecticide spraying will provide the building blocks for achiev

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remain major causes of heart failure, stroke and death among African women and children, despite being preventable and imminently treatable. From 21 to 22 February 2015, the Social Cluster of the Africa Union Commission (AUC) hosted a consultation with RHD experts convened by the Pan-African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to develop a 'roadmap' of key actions that need to be taken by governments to eliminate ARF and eradicate RHD in Africa. Seven priority areas for action were adopted: (1) create prospectiv

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia africae is the agent of African tick bite fever, a disease transmitted by ticks in sub-Saharan Africa. In Union of the Comoros, a recent study reported the presence of a Rickettsia africae vector but no information has been provided on the circulation of the pathogenic agent in this country.
METHODS: To evaluate the possible circulation of Rickettsia spp. in Comorian cattle, genomic DNA was extracted from 512 ticks collected either in the Union of the Comoros or from animals imported from Tanzania and subsequently tested for Rickettsia infection by quantitative PCR.

In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the African Union elevated the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to autonomous status, empowering it to declare Public Health Emergencies of Continental Concern (PHECs). This mechanism was first operationalized in 2024 in response to sustained mpox transmission across multiple African countries, despite the World Health Organization's (WHO) earlier lifting of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). This article examines the PHECs as a decolonial intervention in global health governance. Applying the Critique,
