Evaluation of cerebral dyschromatopsia using color afterimage.

Cerebral dyschromatopsia is traditionally evaluated by color discrimination tests such as the Farnsworth-Maunsell 100 Hue Test. These tests are also used to evaluate color-perception deficits caused by eye disease, and they do not tell us whether color perception is impaired in the eye or in the brain. Here, we used color afterimage to isolate color-perception deficits in the brain from those in the eyes, in a patient with cerebral dyschromatopsia. The results showed that the patient perceived color afterimage of yellow and blue with abnormal duration and chromaticity. On the other hand, the p

Where are you looking? Pseudogaze in afterimages.

How do we know where we are looking? A frequent assumption is that the subjective experience of our direction of gaze is assigned to the location in the world that falls on our fovea. However, we find that observers can shift their subjective direction of gaze among different nonfoveal points in an afterimage. Observers were asked to look directly at different corners of a diamond-shaped afterimage. When the requested corner was 3.5° in the periphery, the observer often reported that the image moved away in the direction of the attempted gaze shift. However, when the corner was at 1.75° eccent

Ptolemy's Optics, double-vision, and the technological afterimage.

In contrast to earlier theorists within the Greek optical tradition, who relied almost exclusively on geometrical diagrams to articulate and explain vision, Ptolemy employed several material instruments in his investigation of sight. These included rulers, glass cylinders, mirrors, and a bronze plaque designed to measure angles of incidence and reflection. These devices allowed Ptolemy to expand the operational definition of vision far beyond that of his predecessors, as he explicated several previously unexamined visual behaviors, including binocular vision, diplopia, and refraction. Afterimage duration differs for migraine with or without aura.

BACKGROUND: It is controversial to what extent afterimages, as distinct visual phenomena, are altered in patients with migraine and whether they have a specific role in migraine pathophysiology. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the duration of afterimages in patients with migraine, migraine with aura (MwA), and migraine without aura (MwoA), compared to healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: Adults with migraine, MwA, and MwoA, diagnosed according to The International Classification of Headache Disorders, third edition criteria and HCs without relevant headache hi

Afterimage-like effects in the motion-sensitive neuron H1.

A powerful effect resembling an afterimage is demonstrated on the pathway to the motion-sensitive neuron H1. This effect is independent of the locally generated gain control described in an earlier paper (Maddess & Laughlin 1985, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B 225, 251). The afterimage, produced across the eye by a stationary pattern, causes the sensitivity to movement to be different according to the local stimulus history, and the effects of low-contrast (0.1) patterns, presented for as little as a few hundred milliseconds, remain for up to 2 s. Moving patterns interact with the afterimage to modulat

Dyskinetopsic Palinopsia: Palinopsia Accompanied by Moving Afterimages.

Palinopsia refers to the abnormal persistence, or recurrence, of visual images after a visual stimulus has subsided. We describe here a case of palinopsia accompanied by a visual motion perception disorder as manifested by moving afterimages. A 71-year-old man presented to us after having experienced acute-onset, vivid, visual hallucinations for 1 week. A detailed history revealed that he was hallucinating multiple living and nonliving objects. He also complained of a persistence of afterimages, particularly in the left visual field. He reported that, on a few occasions, while sitting by the w

Suppression of OKN and VOR by afterimages and imaginary objects.

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is suppressed if attention is directed to a centrally placed afterimage superimposed on a moving display. Imagining a stationary object has little or no effect. An afterimage does not provide the retinal slip and misfoveation error signals provided by a stationary object and we have shown that an effective error signal does not arise from occlusion or masking of the display by the afterimage. Although a lack of relative motion between afterimage and moving display could indicate when OKN gain is one, there is no unique relative motion signal associated with a gain o

Contribution of pannexin channels to afterimage signals in the amphibian retina.

Pannexin 1 (Panx1) forms large-pore, single-membrane channels that connect the intracellular and extracellular environments, permitting the passage of ions and small molecules, such as ATP. Panx1 channels are involved in diverse signaling pathways that contribute to various physiological processes, including sensory processing, although their precise mechanisms of action remain incompletely understood. This study reveals a Panx1-mediated mechanism regulating visual signal processing in the amphibian retina. Using immunolabeling and confocal imaging, we localized Panx1 channels in the cone-domi

A new device to quantify ocular counterroll using retinal afterimages.

BACKGROUND: The integrity of vertical semicircular canal and otolith function remains difficult to assess in the clinical setting, partly due to difficulties in recording ocular counterroll. Here, we quantify static ocular counterroll from head tilt using a new head-mounted device. METHODS: The device consists of an LED positioned 42 cm in front of one eye and a striated lens which produces a streak of light on the retina. The LED is illuminated at full intensity (80 cd) to generate a retinal afterimage. Subsequently, in darkness, the subject's head is tilted in the roll plane. Finally, the L

Visible light induced ocular delayed bioluminescence as a possible origin of negative afterimage.

The delayed luminescence of biological tissues is an ultraweak reemission of absorbed photons after exposure to external monochromatic or white light illumination. Recently, Wang, Bókkon, Dai and Antal (2011) [10] presented the first experimental proof of the existence of spontaneous ultraweak biophoton emission and visible light induced delayed ultraweak photon emission from in vitro freshly isolated rat's whole eye, lens, vitreous humor and retina. Here, we suggest that the photobiophysical source of negative afterimage can also occur within the eye by delayed bioluminescent photons. In othe

Correlation between repeated low-level red light-induced afterimage and axial changes in myopia control.

PURPOSE: To explore the correlation between afterimages induced by repeated low-level red light (RLRL) and changes in refraction. METHOD: Patients who used RLRL for myopia control from 2023.02 to 2024.06 were included in this study. The afterimage appeared on a gray background (RGB 217,217,217; Lab 87,0,0). Afterimage color was recorded with CIELAB nomenclature (R, G, B; L, a, b), and afterimage duration (T) was recorded in seconds. Axial length (AL) and axial length-to-corneal radius ratio (AL/CR) were followed up at 1-, and 3-month. Participants were divided into groups based on a = 0 for G

[Appraisal of the formation of afterimages by means of a new computer application in patients with demyelinating optic neuropathies].

INTRODUCTION: The perception of colour is one of the visual functions affected by optic neuritis. Most of the tests currently available for evaluating dichromatism are based on assessing the hue, but no clinical studies have been conducted to investigate the formation of afterimages on the retina of these patients. AIMS: To evaluate the dichromatism acquired in demyelinating optic neuritis by means of the formation of afterimages on the retina. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This is an observation-based, cross-sectional, case-control study. The cases are patients with at least one bout of optic neuri

Transformation of the Visual Afterimage Under Subject's Eye and Body Movements and the Visual Field Constancy Mechanisms.

Two types of positive afterimages differing in their structural complexity--called poor and rich--were used to investigate the visual field constancy mechanisms during eye and head movements. In the case of a poor afterimage, consistent with Emmert's law, every eye and head movement caused the afterimage to appear moving (in exactly the same way), unlike a real object, which appeared to remain stationary during those same eye and head movements (although its retinal image moved opposite to the eye movement). However, in the case of a rich afterimage, the afterimage appeared stationary during e

Measuring palinopsia: characteristics of a persevering visual sensation from cerebral pathology.

Palinopsia is an abnormal perseverative visual phenomenon, whose relation to normal afterimages is unknown. We measured palinoptic positive visual afterimages in a patient with a cerebral lesion. Positive afterimages were confined to the left inferior quadrant, which allowed a comparison between afterimages in the intact and the affected part of his visual field. Results showed that negative afterimages in the affected quadrant were no different from those in the unaffected quadrant. The positive afterimage in his affected field, however, differed both qualitatively and quantitatively from nor

The cyclopean eye and its implications: vergence state and visual direction.

The cyclopean illusion (Hering, 1861) is an anomalous lateral shift in the apparent direction to a monocularly seen target, which arises when a change in vergence is made by the opposite (nonobserving) eye. Surprisingly, this directional illusion does not arise, when the observed target is an afterimage or an intermittently illuminated (4-8 Hz) object. Instead, during convergence, a monocularly imprinted afterimage seems to move toward the observer, and a stroboscopically illuminated target seems to remain fully stationary. The apparent displacement of an afterimage in depth is particularly pu

Self-Grounded Vision: Hand Ownership Modulates Visual Location through Cortical β and γ Oscillations.

UNLABELLED: Vision is known to be shaped by context, defined by environmental and bodily signals. In the Taylor illusion, the size of an afterimage projected on one's hand changes according to proprioceptive signals conveying hand position. Here, we assessed whether the Taylor illusion does not just depend on the physical hand position, but also on bodily self-consciousness as quantified through illusory hand ownership. Relying on the somatic rubber hand illusion, we manipulated hand ownership, such that participants embodied a rubber hand placed next to their own hand. We found that an afteri

The 'flight of colours' test in multiple sclerosis, retrobulbar neuritis and healthy controls.

The results of the test for afterimages ('flight of colours'; FOC) in healthy controls, MS patients and persons with a history of retrobulbar neuritis are presented. The FOC proved to be a reliable test of involvement of the visual system in these diseases. This concerns the duration of the afterimages as well as the palette of colours. The results were in accordance with those of the VEP, provided patients with a retrobulbar neuritis more than three years ago were omitted. In these persons the FOC proved to be more sensitive than the flash-VEP in detecting old lesions. It was concluded that t

Monocular size and distance scaling is modulated by the presence of a fixation point.

Fixation points are widely used in psychophysical research to stabilise gaze, yet their influence on perceptual outcomes remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of the presence versus absence of a fixation point on monocular size-distance scaling, examining whether it functions as a fixation stabiliser, a spatial anchor (i.e., as a direct depth or location cue), or a competing visual reference. Using a widely employed fixation marker, we compared size and distance judgments for real objects and afterimages (stimuli that differ in their reliance on depth cues). Fixation point

Color architecture in alert macaque cortex revealed by FMRI.

The contribution that different brain areas make to primate color vision, especially in the macaque, is debated. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging in the alert macaque, giving a whole brain perspective of color processing in the healthy brain. We identified color-biased and luminance-biased activity and color-afterimage activity. Color-biased activity was found in V1, V2, and parts of V4 and not in V3a, MT, or other dorsal stream areas, in which a luminance bias predominated. Color-biased activity and color-afterimage activity were also found in a region on the posterior bank
