This paper reports on the effects of therapist and patient age as factors in the evaluation and treatment of adult psychiatric outpatients. Therapist ratings and patient self-ratings are contrasted in three age groups. Rating scales include symptomatology, motivation, insight, and prognosis. In addition, a chart review follow-up of 68 patients includes disposition and drop-out. The data suggest that older patients are perceived as sicker, but less treatable than younger patients or patients of the same age group as the therapist. Residents express a strong preference for treating younger patie

Cataracts, the world's leading cause of blindness, are an enormous public health problem in both developing and industrialized countries. Identifying the risk factors responsible for cataract formation is a difficult and complicated problem because a realistic causal model in cataract formation would not be a simple linear sufficient cause paradigm (e.g., one exposure-one cataract type). A more complex model depicting each risk factor as a component cause, or part of a sufficient cause such as the sufficient/component cause model proposed by Rothman (62), is a more realistic way to summarize h

Brain Age Gap has been associated with dementia in old age. Less is known relating brain age gap to dementia risk-factors or cognitive performance in middle-age. Cognitively healthy, middle-aged subjects from PREVENT-Dementia had comprehensive neuropsychological, neuroimaging and genetic assessments. Brain Ages were predicted from T1-weighted 3T MRI scans. Cognition was assessed using the COGNITO computerized test battery. 552 middle-aged participants (median [interquartile range] age 52.8 [8.7] years, 60.0% female) had baseline data, of whom 95 had amyloid PET data. Brain age gap in middle-ag

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of well-established risk factors for depression differs across the lifespan. Risk factors may be more strongly associated with depression at ages when occurrence, and therefore expectance, is relatively low ("on-time off-time" hypothesis). This large-scale study examined absolute and relative risks of established risk factors for depression across the lifespan.
METHODS: Participants were 2,215 currently or never depressed adults aged 18 to 93 years from two cohort studies: NESDA and NESDO. The occurrence of 19 established risk factors (absolute risk) was examined

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the paper was to determine the risk factors for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants at full term, in Japan.
METHODS: The study was conducted at four hospitals and clinics in the Tokyo metropolitan area. A retrospective review of 2972 mothers and their infants born from singleton pregnancies at any time during the years 2002 and 2003 was conducted.
RESULTS: Of these women, 8.4% gave birth to SGA infants. The proportion of SGA infants was significantly higher among heavy smokers (>10 cigarettes/day; 13.7%, P < 0.01). The odds ratio (OR) for SGA decreased signific

To examine sociodemographic, menstrual, reproductive, and other factors which may influence the age at natural menopause, the authors analyzed data from a large series of women participating in a nationwide breast cancer screening program conducted between 1973 and 1980. Standard life table techniques permitted assessment of factors suspected of varying the time to menstrual cessation among 983 premenopausal women, 1091 surgically menopausal women, and 1423 naturally menopausal women. The median age at natural menopause was 51.1 years. Multivariate analysis indicated that parity, irregularity

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for cognitive decline might depend on chronological age. The aim of the study was to explore the age dependency of risk factors for cognitive decline in cognitively healthy subjects aged 55-85 years at baseline.
METHODS: We included 2527 cognitively healthy subjects from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). Median follow-up was 9.1 (IQR: 3.2-19.0) years. The association of genetic and cardiovascular risk factors, depressive symptoms, inflammation markers and lifestyle risk factors with decline in MMSE and memory function was tested using spline regression an

BACKGROUND: Incident disability rates enable the comparison of risk across populations. Understanding these by age, sex, and race is important for planning for the care of older adults and targeting prevention.
METHODS: We calculated incident disability rates among older adults in the Cardiovascular Health Study, a study of 5,888 older adults aged ≥ 65 years over 6 years of follow-up. Disability was defined in the following two ways: (i) self-report of disability (severe difficulty or inability) in any of six Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and (ii) mobility difficulty (any difficulty walki

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Australia and other Western countries. As there is no cure for AMD, and treatments to stop its progression have met with limited success, there is an interest in identifying modifiable risk factors to prevent or slow disease progression. To date, smoking is the only proven modifiable risk factor for AMD. Other factors under study include (i) cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, body mass index, and atherosclerosis; and (ii) dietary risk factors including fat and antioxidant intake, but so far

This study was performed to evaluate the relative contribution of oocyte and uterine factors to the age-related reduction in fecundity. The pregnancy and miscarriage rates in women receiving donated oocytes were compared to those in women using their own oocytes in in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) procedures. Oocyte donation with embryo transfer was performed on 241 women in 371 cycles; 116 of these women became pregnant (48% per patient and 31.5% per cycle) of whom 40 (35%) miscarried, giving a live birth rate of 20.5%. Assisted conception, in the form o

Background. Femicides are an increasing social problem worldwide. In this study, we aim to describe the trend of femicides in the prepandemic decade and characterize the femicide victims and their perpetrators. Methods. We assessed the trend of femicides in Peru during 2010-2019 and performed a cross-sectional study to analyze the femicides reported in 2019 using open data. Results. We analyzed 166 femicides reported in 24/25 regions of Peru in 2019 and calculated a yearly incidence of 1.01 femicides per 100,000 women. This incidence level represents an increase of 38% compared to the mean ann

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have demonstrated that environmental factors, such as meteorological factors and air pollutants, are closely associated with epistaxis. However, age-specific associations between environmental factors and epistaxis have not yet been evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between individual meteorological factors and air pollutants and epistaxis, by age.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Records of patients covered by the Korean National Health Insurance Service who visited our hospital for epistaxis between January 1, 2002, and

Bone age (BA) is a clinical marker of bone maturation which indicates the developmental stage of endochondral ossification at the epiphysis and the growth plate. Hormones that promote the endochondral ossification process include growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1, thyroid hormone, estrogens, and androgens. In particular, estrogens are essential for growth plate fusion and closure in both sexes. Bone maturation in female children is more advanced than in male children of all ages. The promotion of bone maturation seen in females before the onset of puberty is thought to be an effect

Epidemiologic studies on risk factors for cataract have progressed significantly over the last decade. Age-related cataract is a multifactorial disease, and different risk factors seem to play a role for different cataract types. Cortical and posterior subcapsular cataracts appear to be most closely related to environmental stresses such as ultraviolet exposure, diabetes, and drug ingestion. Nuclear cataracts appear to be associated with smoking. Alcohol use seems to be associated with all cataract types. Consistent evidence also suggests that the prevalence of all cataract types is lower amon

We examined the distribution of ages of onset of autism and related communication handicaps and assessed factors related to age of onset. Subjects were approximately 1,800 children seen at Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren) since 1970. Exact numbers of subjects varied with different analyses due to missing data. Data were gathered through direct assessment, interview, and questionnaire. Seventy-six percent of autistic children were identified by parents by 24 months of age, and 94% by 36 months. Families reporting early onset te
