The Ambivalent Ageism Scale: Developing and Validating a Scale to Measure Benevolent and Hostile Ageism.

PURPOSE: Much like sexism, ageism is a multifaceted prejudice; it involves benevolent and hostile attitudes toward older adults. There are many scales designed to measure hostile ageism, yet none dedicated to measuring benevolent ageism. In the current studies, we developed and validated a 13-item measure: the Ambivalent Ageism Scale (AAS). DESIGN AND METHODS: We employed four stages of scale development and validation. In Stage 1, we created 41 benevolent ageist items adapted from existing ageism measures. In Stages 2 and 3, we further refined the pool of items through additional testing and

Understandings of Ageism and Healthcare in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Ageism is widespread and intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, with resource shortages contributing to healthcare guidelines that systematically deprioritised older adults. Whilst the ethical considerations of these guidelines are well documented, perceptions of age and ageism in healthcare allocation remain underexplored. This study examined younger and older adults' perceptions of age and ageism in healthcare during COVID-19 through a social identity approach. Using a story completion method, 22 older and 41 younger adult participants completed a story about a younger or older COVID-19 p

Construction and Validation of the Gendered Ageism Scale (GAS).

Population aging and increasing longevity have radically transformed social dynamics. Older women experience "double discrimination" known as gendered ageism and linked to the intersection of age and gender. Despite the relevance of this construct, no measurement scale for it currently exists. The aim of the research was to construct and validate the Gendered Ageism Scale (GAS). In a first study (N = 410), an initial set of items was developed; factor analyses were conducted; reliability and convergent validity were analyzed. The second study (N = 602) tested the stability of the factor struct

Experiences of ageism in palliative care: Nursing students' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Increasing life expectancy is associated with greater dependency among older adults due to the rising prevalence of chronic diseases. Therefore, prejudice, stigmatization, and discrimination against older adults become more pronounced as individuality decreases. AIM: This study aimed to examine the views and experiences of nursing students, as future healthcare professionals who may play a role in shaping attitudes toward older adults, regarding ageism in clinical practice. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive research design was employed to explore how nursing students experienced

Observing ageism implicitly using the numerical parity judgment task.

Objective magnitude representations may be prone to subjective percepts when judging human beings. An elderly man is clearly "large" in terms of age. But, is he truly perceived as "big" in our minds? We investigated whether "objective" representation of age interacts with subjective stereotypical percepts of aging, using a numeral classification task preceded by prime images containing human figures. First, prime images of children and young adults demonstrated a positive correlation between perceived age and numerical size. Second, negatively and positively valenced prime images were associat

Ageism and the abuse of older people in health and social care.

Ageing is a natural process and yet ageism, ageist practice and abuse of older people occur among not only the general public but also in health and social care settings. Recent media reports have highlighted delays in meeting the needs of older people, physical and psychological abuse and that decisions are being made about whether or not to resuscitate an older patient without consultation with the patient and his/her family (e.g. British Journal of Nursing, 2000). This article looks at ageism and the abuse of older people and discusses what can be done to achieve quality care for older peop

Expanding Benevolent Ageism: Replicating Attitudes of Overaccommodation to Older Men.

BACKGROUND: Older adults are stereotyped in a paternalistic manner (warm, but incompetent), deserving of assistance regardless of their need; however, little is known about how gender contextualizes these attitudes. The purpose of this study was to extend previous work that examined the malleability of the paternalistic older adult stereotype using a two-part experimental vignette. The goals of the current study included: (1) to examine attitudes of benevolent ageist behavior toward a male target, (2) to confirm whether attributions made toward an older male target change if they defy or confi

Ageism toward older workers and wellbeing at work: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of unprecedented workforce age diversity, workplace ageism is increasingly reported. This review synthesizes empirical evidence on the relationship between workplace ageism and workplace wellbeing among workers aged 50 and older, focusing on how these effects unfold (mediation) and the conditions under which they are amplified or buffered (moderation). METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Searches were conducted in major academic databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, Pubmed, among others. Reproductive ageism: Late fertility and the politics of good mothering in Chile.

Late fertility is a growing global phenomenon, but midlife mothers continue to be subject to social prejudice. This article introduces the notion of reproductive ageism as an epistemic tool to explore the cultural age norms underlying reproduction and understand how midlife mothers receive, resist, and resignify social prejudice by framing their identities as good mothers and their childrearing practices as good mothering. Drawing on qualitative data produced through 40 interviews on the transition to motherhood with Chilean women, the findings reveal that age remains an important cultural mar

An ethnographic study of stigma and ageism in residential care or assisted living.

PURPOSE: This study explored aspects of stigmatization for older adults who live in residential care or assisted living (RC-AL) communities and what these settings have done to address stigma. DESIGN AND METHODS: We used ethnography and other qualitative data-gathering and analytic techniques to gather data from 309 participants (residents, family and staff) from six RC-AL settings in Maryland. We entered the transcript data into Atlas.ti 5.0. We analyzed the data by using grounded theory techniques for emergent themes. RESULTS: Four themes emerged that relate to stigma in RC-AL: (a) ageism

Are psychiatrists guilty of "ageism" when it comes to taking a sexual history?

OBJECTIVE: To determine current perceived practice of consultant psychiatrists regarding taking a sexual history and management of sexual dysfunction of their patients. DESIGN: A postal questionnaire survey. PARTICIPANTS: A group of old age and general consultant psychiatrists. MEASURES: A questionnaire with two different case vignettes describing an elderly male complaining of low mood (the other vignette described a middle-aged man with the same complaint) and questions regarding taking a sexual history and management of sexual dysfunction. RESULTS: Response rate of 61% was obtained. Con

Factors related to benevolent and hostile ageism among paramedical students.

Caring for older adults is often seen as less prestigious, less attractive, and even boring and frustrating by health care students. A cross-sectional study of 265 paramedical students examined their fear of death, anxiety about aging, knowledge of aging and gerontological care, perceptions of older adults, and how these factors relate to ageist attitudes and perceptions of working with older adults using path analysis. The study found that anxiety about aging, negative perceptions of older adults, and limited knowledge of aging and gerontological care were directly linked to hostile ageist at

From X to Z: generational differences in ageism among Iranian nurses.

OBJECTIVE: Ageism is a form of discrimination based on age. It is defined as negative attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors toward older individuals. In healthcare settings, ageism can lead to reduced care quality, patient dissatisfaction, and poorer health outcomes. One potential factor contributing to ageism among healthcare providers is generational differences. Nurses from different generational cohorts (X, Y, and Z) have differences in socialization, experience, and cultural context, which can lead to variation in ageism. This study aimed to investigate generational differences in ageism among

Ageism during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election: thematic analysis of tweets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: When the 2024 U.S. Presidential election was announced, Joe Biden and Donald Trump were two of the oldest candidates in election history. This circumstance created sentiments of ageist political discourse and arguments for presidential age limits. Despite clear ageist discourse during the U.S. election, there is a notable lack of research examining this issue. This study used posts from X (formerly Twitter) to understand ageism on social media during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, particularly focusing on the campaign period when the race was between Biden and

Age-Neutral Surgical Stabilization of Rib Fractures: Breaking the Ageism Barrier.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) is associated with lower rates of mortality and fewer complications. This study evaluates whether the decision to undergo SSRF is associated with age, race, ethnicity, and insurance status and assesses associated clinical outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included patients ≥45 y old with rib fractures who underwent SSRF in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program from 2016 to 2020. Race, ethnicity, and insurance statuses were collected. Age in years was dichotomized into two groups: 45-64 and 65+. Outcomes included ventil

Adaptation and psychometric properties of the Spanish Perceived Ageism Questionnaire (PAQ).

OBJECTIVES: Perceived ageism is a critical variable for understanding mental health and wellbeing across the lifespan. The Perceived Ageism Questionnaire (PAQ) assesses subjective experiences of both negative and positive perceived ageism through dimensions of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. The aim of this study was to (a) adapt the PAQ into Spanish and analyze its psychometric properties and (b) examine the associations between perceived ageism, mental health, self-perceptions of aging and age. METHOD: A sample of 404 adults living in Spain (aged 18 to 95 years old) completed the

Ageism as an Upstream Determinant: A Three-Level Framework for Reframing Fall Prevention.

Falls among older adults remain a major public health issue despite strong evidence supporting prevention strategies. Rising mortality and costs highlight a gap between knowledge and implementation. This gap is partly driven by ageism, which operates at structural, interpersonal, and individual levels, influencing how fall prevention is implemented, received, and adopted. Factors such as underreporting, environmental barriers, and internalized stigma reduce effectiveness. The article argues for a holistic, multilevel approach that integrates social determinants of health, especially ageism. Us
