Agent Orange exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Evidence of organic psychological deficits in Vietnam veterans exposed to the herbicide Agent Orange was established through a neuropsychological battery. Also, the exposed Vietnam veterans, in contrast to a matched control group of Vietnam veterans, showed a significantly higher rate of posttraumatic stress disorder and its associated features: depression, anxiety, and increased aggression. The latter was subdivided into uncontrollable pressures, verbal violence, violence against objects, assaults, and suicidal thoughts. Active cases of chloracne, a medical indicator, were used to determine A

Cardiac amyloidosis possibly secondary to Agent Orange exposure.

Much research has focused on the association between the toxic metabolites of the tactical herbicide Agent Orange and several blood cancers, including systemic amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis. Here we present a rare case of heart failure secondary to cardiac AL amyloidosis as a consequence of Agent Orange exposure. An elderly man was transferred to the intensive care unit for a suspected gastrointestinal bleed and decompensation of congestive heart failure. An echocardiogram suggested restrictive cardiomyopathy, and an abdominal fat pad biopsy confirmed amyloid involvement. The diagnosis

Oil of bitter orange: new topical antifungal agent.

BACKGROUND: Superficial dermatophyte infection is one of the most common dermatologic diseases. Some of these infections are extremely resistant to therapy. METHODS AND PATIENTS: Sixty patients participated in this study; they were classified into three groups (20 patients in each). All groups had comparable numbers of patients with tinea corporis, cruris, and pedis. Group 1 was treated with a 25% emulsion of oil of bitter orange (OBO) three times daily; group 2 was treated with 20% OBO in alcohol three times daily and group 3 was treated with pure OBO, once daily. Clinical and mycologic exam

Agent Orange Herbicidal Toxin-Initiation of Alzheimer-Type Neurodegeneration.

BACKGROUND: Agent Orange (AO) is a Vietnam War-era herbicide that contains a 1 : 1 ratio of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T). Emerging evidence suggests that AO exposures cause toxic and degenerative pathologies that may increase the risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of the two main AO constituents on key molecular and biochemical indices of AD-type neurodegeneration. METHODS: Long Evans rat frontal lobe slice cultures treated with 250μg/ml of 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, or both (D + T) were evaluated f

Agent Orange Reviewed: Potential Role in Peripheral Neuropathy and Neurodegeneration.

Agent Orange, a dioxin-containing toxin, was used as an herbicide during the Vietnam War. Exposures to Agent Orange were initially linked to birth defects among Vietnamese civilians residing near aerially sprayed regions. Years later, returning South Korean and U.S. Veterans exposed to Agent Orange exhibited increased rates of malignancy, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and birth defects in their offspring. Growing evidence that herbicides and pesticides contribute to chronic diseases including neurodegeneration raises concern that Agent Orange exposures may have increased the risk for later

Skin diseases associated with Agent Orange and other organochlorine exposures.

Organochlorine exposure is an important cause of cutaneous and systemic toxicity. Exposure has been associated with industrial accidents, intentional poisoning, and the use of defoliants, such as Agent Orange in the Vietnam War. Although long-term health effects are systematically reviewed by the Institute of Medicine, skin diseases are not comprehensively assessed. This represents an important practice gap as patients can present with cutaneous findings. This article provides a systematic review of the cutaneous manifestations of known mass organochlorine exposures in military and industrial

Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma Associated With Exposure to Agent Orange.

Agent Orange (AO) is a toxic herbicide carcinogen mixture of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) that was used extensively during the Vietnam conflict of the 1960s and 1970s. We present a case of an elderly veteran who presented with a progressively enlarging right neck mass. During active combat in Vietnam, he experienced extensive exposure to AO. He was eventually diagnosed with stage I diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with locally advanced/bulky disease. The patient was deemed higher risk for systemic disease given the skin breakthrough at presentation. Additional labs revealed

Agent orange and the risk of gestational trophoblastic disease in Vietnam.

There have been claims of an increased risk for gestational trophoblastic disease (i.e., hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma) in Vietnam since the period of Agent Orange sprayings. In 1990, we conducted a case-control study in Ho Chi Minh City to investigate risk factors for gestational trophoblastic disease in Vietnam. Eighty-seven married women, all of whom had a recent pathologic diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease, identified in the Obstetrical and Gynecological Hospital, were included in the study. Eighty-seven married women who were admitted mainly in the surgery departments

Exposure to Agent Orange and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Among US Military Personnel.

IMPORTANCE: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its mortality are on the rise. Viral hepatitis and alcohol are leading risk factors; however, other risk factors among veterans are less defined, including Agent Orange (AO), an herbicide linked to several cancers. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of AO exposure and HCC in a national cohort of Vietnam veterans. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included Vietnam veterans who served between 1966 and 1975, were male, were older than 18 years at the time of deployment, and had established follow-up in the Veteran

Paternal exposure to Agent Orange and spina bifida: a meta-analysis.

The objective of this study is to conduct a meta-analysis of published and unpublished studies that examine the association between Agent Orange (AO) exposure and the risk of spina bifida. Relevant studies were identified through a computerized literature search of Medline and Embase from 1966 to 2008; a review of the reference list of retrieved articles and conference proceedings; and by contacting researchers for unpublished studies. Both fixed-effects and random-effects models were used to pool the results of individual studies. The Cochrane Q test and index of heterogeneity (I(2)) were use

Agent orange exposure and prostate cancer risk in the million veteran program.

BACKGROUND: The US government considers veterans to have been exposed to Agent Orange if they served in Vietnam while the carcinogen was in use, and these veterans are often deemed at high risk of prostate cancer (PCa). Here, we assess whether presumed Agent Orange exposure is independently associated with increased risk of any metastatic or fatal PCa in a diverse Veteran cohort still alive in the modern era (at least 2011), when accounting for race/ethnicity, family history, and genetic risk. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants in the Million Veteran Program (MVP; enrollment began in 2011) wh

The legacy of Agent Orange: Prenatal exposure to dioxin and human capital formation.

This paper examines the effect of prenatal exposure to Agent Orange, a dioxin-contaminated herbicide that was dispersed on a large scale in South Vietnam for military operations during the Vietnam War, on educational attainment of Vietnamese civilians. The identification strategy exploits province-by-cohort variation in the intensity of Agent Orange sprayed. I find that controlling for conventional bombing, cohorts exposed in utero to Agent Orange (who were born between 1962 and 1971) have lower educational attainment compared to other birth cohorts. The same inference is obtained when employi

Agent Orange Exposure and Dementia Diagnosis in US Veterans of the Vietnam Era.

IMPORTANCE: Agent Orange is a powerful herbicide that contains dioxin and was used during the Vietnam War. Although prior studies have found that Agent Orange exposure is associated with increased risk of a wide range of conditions, including neurologic disorders (eg, Parkinson disease), metabolic disorders (eg, type 2 diabetes), and systemic amyloidosis, the association between Agent Orange and dementia remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between Agent Orange exposure and incident dementia diagnosis in US veterans of the Vietnam era. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Thi

Desmoplastic small round-cell tumor: an adult with previous exposure to agent orange.

Desmoplastic small round-cell tumor is an uncommon, highly aggressive tumor with a predilection for pediatric age groups and young adults. It is very unusual in the elderly population. Although Agent Orange has been associated with soft-tissue sarcoma, an association with desmoplastic small round-cell tumor has not been reported. A 52-year-old male presented with abdominal distention, dyspnea, and a 9 kg weight loss. Prior history was significant for hepatitis C and diabetes. He was a Vietnam veteran and he admitted being exposed to Agent Orange. On physical examination, the abdomen was disten
