Medicinal plants have long been used for therapeutic purposes in many cultures. They represent sources of important bioactive compounds, often of pharmacological significance. Ageratina Spach is the largest genus in Mexico and is characterised by its traditional use in the treatment of cancer and infections of the skin, blood, and intestines. Different species of Ageratina have been biologically evaluated at the extract and compound levels, and their chemical contents have been purified and characterised. Following a PRISMA meta-analysis, 29 scientific reports were selected and analysed. Table

Ageratina adenophora (A. adenophora) is a globally invasive plant with strong ecological adaptability. To elucidate its adaptive chemical basis and seasonal dynamics of bioactive constituents, this study used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to analyze volatile oils and ethanol extracts from the aerial tissues of A. adenophora across four seasons. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to link seasonal metabolites with antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Essential oils contained monoterpenes and ses

Ageratina adenophora is one of the major invasive weeds that causes instability of the ecosystem. Research has reported that A. adenophora produces allelochemicals that inhibit the growth and development of food crops, and also contain some toxic compounds that cause toxicity to animals that consume it. Over the past decades, studies on the identification of major toxic compounds of A. adenophora and their toxic molecular mechanisms have been reported. In addition, weed control interventions, such as herbicides application, was employed to reduce the spread of A. adenophora. However, the devel

Ageratina adenophora is a noxious plant and it is known to cause acute asthma, diarrhea, depilation, and even death in livestock (Zhu et al., 2007; Wang et al., 2017). A. adenophora grows near roadsides and degraded land worldwide (He et al., 2015b). In the areas where it grows, A. adenophora is an invasive species that inhibits the growth of local plants and causes poisoning in animals that come in contact with it (Nie et al., 2012). In China, these plants can be found in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Chongqing, and other southwestern areas (He et al., 2015a) and they have become a dominant speci

Ageratina adenophora (A. adenophora), one of the prominent invasive plants in the Asian continent has shown toxicity in animals. However, studies examining the gene expression and metabolic profiles of animals that ingest A. adenophora have not yet been reported in the literature. Therefore, considering the wide distribution of A. adenophora, it is necessary to elucidate the toxic mechanisms of A. adenophora via multiomics approach. In this study, we identified and evaluated the toxic mechanisms of action associated with bioactive compounds in A. adenophora by using network toxicology studies

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Among the main causes affecting the wound healing process, we find diabetes mellitus, which is due to the occurrence of a prolonged inflammation phase, defects in angiogenesis, and a diminution in fibroblast proliferation. The species Ageratina pichinchensis has been utilized in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of skin wounds. Pharmacological models have demonstrated that an extract obtained from this species improves wound healing and, through a clinical study, it was evidenced that the extract (in a pharmaceutical form) is effective in the treatm

Ageratina adenophora (A. adenophora) is an invasive plant that is harmful to animals. The plants toxic effects on the liver have been studied in detail, however, the inflammation aspects of the hepatotoxicity are rarely discussed in literature. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the level of inflammation and the associated changes in liver metabolism caused by A. adenophora ingestion. Goat were fed with A. adenophora powder which accounts for 40% of the forage for 90 d. After the feeding period, the liver tissues were collected and the level of inflammation was detected using H & E stai

Regular ingestion of Eupatorium adenophorum [Ageratina adenophora (Spreng.)] or Crofton weed causes chronic pulmonary disease in horses mainly in Australia, New Zealand, and the Himalayas. The disease is characterized by pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, emphysema, alveolar epithelisation and reduced tolerance to exercise. Horses apparently are the only animals affected and there are numerous reports of farms losing all their horses. The disorder was produced experimentally in horse feeding trials, and it was shown that characteristic lesions occurred in the lungs. In studies with laboratory an

The aerial parts of the species Ageratina pichinchensis, popularly known as "axihuitl", have been empirically used in Mexico for wound-healing purposes. The evaluation of an extract from A. pichinchensis (in an in vivo model) demonstrated its capacity to reduce, in a significant manner, the time required for wound healing in rodent skin. This same extract showed (in vitro) a capacity of encouraging proliferation of normal human fetal lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). This study's objective was to evaluate, in a clinical trial, the effectiveness and tolerability of the topical administration of a produ

With new emerging diseases such as COVID-19 and an increasing incidence of cancer, there remains a significant need for investigating new therapeutic options to treat a wide range of ailments and disorders. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) and white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima) have been used medicinally by native people in the Midwestern United States for centuries. However, the antiproliferative and antimicrobial properties of the aqueous extracts of these plants remain unclear. In this study, we evaluate the therapeutic potential of peppermint and white snakeroot aqueous leaf extracts by e

An 8-year-old, crossbred beef cow was referred to the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University for a complete necropsy in October 2009. The cow was the sixth to die in a 7-day period. Affected cows were reportedly stumbling and became weak, excitable, and recumbent. Histologically, myonecrosis was severe in the skeletal muscles and mild in the heart and tongue. According to the submitter, exposure to a poisonous plant was suspected, and a plant specimen received from this case was identified as white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima). Using the white snakeroot specimen,

The rapid evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds has driven urgent demand for eco-friendly bioherbicides, yet most microbial agents suffer narrow application ranges and unstable field efficacy. In this study, an Albifimbria verrucaria strain DY01 was isolated from naturally diseased leaves of Oplismenus undulatifolius. At 4 × 107 CFU mL-1, DY01 spore suspension caused severe chlorosis and seedling mortality across six out of seven tested weeds within 5 days, while only Cyperus iria sustained minimal injury. The mortality rates of Echinochloa crus-galli, Microstegium vimineum, and the invasive
