Endocarditis due to Aggregatibacter Segnis: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: As a member of the HACEK group, Aggregatibacter segnis (A. segnis) is a fastidious Gram-negative coccobacillus that resides in the human oropharyngeal flora. Infective endocarditis caused by A. segnis is rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for a 3-month history of intermittent high fever, chills, and chest distress. On presentation, he was febrile and tachycardic but otherwise with stable vital signs. Physical examination revealed systolic murmurs in the aortic and mitral valve areas. Pitting edema was evident in the lower extremitie

Subdural empyema caused by Aggregatibacter segnis: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Aggregatibacter species are Gram-negative bacteria typically recognized as oral saprophytes in humans, with invasive infections uncommon in immunocompetent individuals. To the best our knowledge, this is the first reported case of subdural empyema attributed to Aggregatibacter segnis (A. segnis). CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female was transferred to our hospital from a local facility due to headache, fever, and left-sided limb numbness. Initially suspected of subdural hematoma and viral encephalitis, she did not respond well to prior treatment. Cerebral computed tomography an

Left Ventricular Apical Intracardiac Mass With Embolic Stroke During Aggregatibacter segnis Bacteremia Following Acute Cholangitis: A Case Report.

An elderly woman with cholangiocarcinoma and a metallic biliary stent presented with fever and anorexia and was initially treated for acute cholangitis with biliary drainage and intravenous ampicillin/sulbactam. Two sets of blood cultures grew Aggregatibacter segnis (A. segnis) identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, prompting evaluation for infective endocarditis (IE). Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) showed no vegetation but revealed apical hypokinesis suggestive of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Despite antimicrobial therapy, fe

Distribution of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase in genus Aggregatibacter and description of Aggregatibacter animalimorsus sp. nov., Aggregatibacter holmi sp. nov., and Aggregatibacter valvarum sp. nov.

INTRODUCTION: Bacteria of genus Aggregatibacter vary with respect to dependence on exogenous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). The genus is incompletely resolved, as 20% of deposited Aggregatibacter genome sequences do not belong to named species. METHODS: We performed phenotypic analysis of the four named Aggregatibacter species plus four additional genomospecies, and bioinformatics analysis of 282 genomes; 237 of these genomes represent cultured isolates. RESULTS: Independence of NAD is ubiquitous in genomospecies related to Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, common in Aggregati

The tongue microbiome in healthy subjects and patients with intra-oral halitosis.

Intra-oral halitosis (IOH) is an unpleasant odor emanating from the oral cavity. It is thought that the microbiota of the dorsal tongue coating plays a crucial role in this condition. The aim of the study was to investigate the composition of the tongue microbiome in subjects with and without IOH. A total of 26 subjects, 16 IOH patients and 10 healthy subjects were recruited based on their organoleptic score and volatile sulfur compound (VSC) measurements. The composition of the tongue microbiome was studied using the 16s amplicon sequencing of the V3-V4 hyper variable region with an Illumina

[Study of mutual dependence of periodontal and colonic microbiome in health and pathology using NSG-sequencing].

By using NGS-sequencing libraries of DNA from periodontal swabs with primers specific to V6 region of 16S rDNA prevalence of bacterial genera and species in periodontal and colonic microbiota of patients with periodontitis of different severity and healthy donors was analyzed. Hyper-colonization of the colon with Akkermansia muciniphila was found to be the most important maker of negative predisposition to periodontitis (t=133,7 at р=10(-6)). This result is in a good agreement with communications about positive impact of hyper-colonization of the colon with this species on type 2 diabetes, obe

Correlation between oral microbial characteristics and overall bone density of Postmenopausal women based on macrogenomic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO), a prevalent bone disease triggered by estrogen deficiency - induced bone mass reduction and deterioration of bone tissue microarchitecture, escalates the risk of fragility fractures. Recent research has highlighted the pivotal role of oral and gut microbiota in PMO development, giving rise to the "oral - gut - bone axis" concept. METHODS: A total of 21 postmenopausal women, aged 50 - 60, were recruited for the study. Based on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements from dual - energy X - ray absorptiometry (DXA), participants were divided into os

Periodontal disease bacteria specific to tonsil in IgA nephropathy patients predicts the remission by the treatment.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin (Ig)A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis in the world. Some bacteria were reported to be the candidate of the antigen or the pathogenesis of IgAN, but systematic analysis of bacterial flora in tonsil with IgAN has not been reported. Moreover, these bacteria specific to IgAN might be candidate for the indicator which can predict the remission of IgAN treated by the combination of tonsillectomy and steroid pulse. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We made a comprehensive analysis of tonsil flora in 68 IgAN patients and 28 control patients usin

The microbiome landscape of oral cancer in young patients.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is rising in patients under the age of 50, without smoking or alcohol abuse. Viruses are not a causative factor of OSCC in younger patients. The oral microbiome has not been evaluated in this unique patient cohort for a potential bacterial etiology. METHODS: We report the bacterial diversity and composition of the largest cohort of OSCC patients with whole genome sequencing (n = 72) and compare it with oral mucosa from healthy controls (n = 10) using the Strengthening the Organization and Reporting of Microbiome Studies guidelin

The Oral Microbiota May Have Influence on Oral Cancer.

The oral microbiota plays an important role in the human microbiome and human health, and imbalances between microbes and their hosts can lead to oral and systemic diseases and chronic inflammation, which is usually caused by bacteria and contributes to cancer. There may be a relationship between oral bacteria and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC); however, this relationship has not been thoroughly characterized. Therefore, in this study, we compared the microbiota compositions between tumor sites and opposite normal tissues in buccal mucosal of 50 patients with OSCC using the 16S rDNA seque

Oral Microbiome and Constipation: A Causal Link Revealed by Mendelian Randomization.

BACKGROUND: Constipation affects approximately 15.3% of the global population. While the gut microbiome's role in constipation has been studied, the causal relationship between the oral microbiome and constipation remains unexplored. METHODS: We utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) and large-scale GWAS data to investigate the causal relationship between the oral microbiome and constipation. Oral microbiome data were sourced from a metagenome-wide association study (mgGWAS) on 2984 individuals, while constipation GWAS data came from 176 629 samples in the Japan Biobank. Statistical methods in

Microbiological characteristics of different tongue coatings in adults.

BACKGROUND: Tongue coating is an important health indicator in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The tongue coating microbiome can distinguish disease patients from healthy controls. To study the relationship between different types of tongue coatings and health, we analyzed the species composition of different types of tongue coatings and the co-occurrence relationships between microorganisms in Chinese adults. From June 2019 to October 2020, 158 adults from Hangzhou and Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, were enrolled. We classified the TCM tongue coatings into four different types: thin wh
