Aging in place within permanent supportive housing.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether and how permanent supportive housing (PSH) programs are able to support aging in place among tenants with serious mental illness. DESIGN: Investigators used a mixed-method approach known as a convergent parallel design in which quantitative and qualitative data are analyzed separately and findings are merged during interpretation. Quantitative analysis compared 1-year pre-residential and post-residential outcomes for PSH program enrollees, comparing adults aged 35-49 years (n = 3990) with those aged 50 years or older (n = 3086). Case study analysis usin

Case Report: Multifactorial Intervention for Safe Aging in Place.

Background/Objectives: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity in older adults, particularly those with multiple comorbidities. A multidisciplinary approach addressing physical, psychological, and environmental factors is essential for reducing fall risk and supporting aging in place. This report evaluates the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary, multifactorial approach in managing high fall risk in an older adult with diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis. Methods: A 72-year-old woman with a recurrent history of falls participated in an 8-week intervention as part of the American Physical

"A right place for everybody": Supporting aging in the right place for older people experiencing homelessness.

While policies and practices that promote aging in place have risen in prominence over the last two decades, marginalised older adults have largely been overlooked. 'Aging in the right place' is a concept that recognises the importance of adequate and appropriate age-related health and psychosocial supports in shelter/housing settings and their impact on the ability of older people to age optimally. To understand the unique shelter/housing challenges and solutions that affect aging in the right place for older people experiencing homelessness (OPEH), we conducted three World Café workshops in

Voice-Controlled Intelligent Personal Assistants to Support Aging in Place.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Many older adults wish to age in place, and voice-controlled intelligent personal assistants (VIPAs; eg, Amazon Echo and Google Home) potentially could support unmet home needs. No prior studies have researched the real-world use of VIPAs among older adults. We sought to explore how older adults and caregivers utilize VIPAs. DESIGN/MEASUREMENT: Retrospective review of all verified purchase reviews of the Amazon Echo posted on Amazon.com between January 2015 and January 2018, with filtering for health-related older adult key words. Open-ended reviews were qualitatively a

Feasibility of aging in place clinics in low income senior housing.

The purpose of this study was to describe the feasibility of implementing interdisciplinary senior housing clinics. Feasibility was based on evidence of resident participation, services provided, improvement in clinical outcomes and sustaining clinics over time. Data were collected prospectively in four senior housing communities which included approximately 375 residents 60 years of age and older. Over the 12-month implementation period, 228 residents were seen, 61 % of all residents. We gave 131 immunizations, checked 576 blood pressures, completed 92 foot care treatments, 69 hearing evaluat

"Aging at Home, Aging Better?": Examining the Relationship Between Aging in Place and Quality of Life Levels of Older Adults.

Population aging raises important questions about how older adults can remain in their homes and communities with dignity and support. This study examined the relationship between aging in place and quality of life among older adults in Türkiye. A correlational survey was conducted with 378 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and over in Burdur using the Aging in Place Scale (APS) and CASP-19 Quality of Life Scale. Women, rural residents, individuals without chronic disease, and those living with spouses or others reported higher APS scores. Quality of life was also higher among women, married p

Housing Instability and Policy Considerations for Equitable Aging in Place in Canada.

BACKGROUND: In this article, we apply a gender-based analysis plus framework to research the housing experiences of older, low-income adults living and aging in Hamilton. Low-income older adults with intersectional identities are at risk of not aging in place due to marginalization and housing instability. OBJECTIVE: Policy currently homogenizes the experience of aging by sidelining intersectional factors that have a bearing on aging well in place. The research aims to develop policy recommendations to address this gap. METHODS: Several methods captured the housing experiences of low-income

Housing and Stroke Outcomes: Why Aging in Place Needs to Be Equitable.

Limited research on the impacts of housing conditions on post-stroke outcomes exists, particularly in minoritized neighborhoods that face greater housing disparities than non-Hispanic White neighborhoods. This is largely due to the unavailability of data that combines residential conditions and post-stroke outcomes in diverse communities. This brief report explored whether neighborhood housing values, a proxy of housing conditions, mediate the association between neighborhood ethnic composition (%Hispanic) and post-stroke outcomes in Nueces County, a bi-ethnic community in south Texas. Linear

Challenges to Aging in the Right Place for Older Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Aging in the Right Place (AIRP), the process of occupying housing that meets one's unique preferences and needs, is a critical component of aging well. Homelessness in later life compromises AIRP. This qualitative study examined the factors that informed housing options before, during, and after episodes of homelessness in later life and the indicators of AIRP that those options embodied. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional qualitative study consisted of interviews with 22 older adults who experienced homelessness after age 55 and 9 housing service pro

SeniorSentry: Correlation and Mutual Information-Based Contextual Anomaly Detection for Aging in Place.

With the ever-growing reliance on IoT-enabled sensors to age in place, a need arises to protect them from malicious actors and detect malfunctions. In an IoT smart home, it is reasonable to hypothesize that sensors near one another can exhibit linear or nonlinear correlations. If substantiated, this property can be beneficial for constructing relationship trends between the sensors and, consequently, detecting attacks or other anomalies by measuring the deviation of their readings against these trends. In this work, we confirm the presence of correlations between co-located sensors by statisti

The process of mediated aging-in-place: a theoretically and empirically based model.

Aging-in-place is a complex geographical process mediated by institutions and other social forces. Two relatively under-studied services based on an aging-in-place strategy are adult day centers (ADCs) and assisted living residences (ALRs). This paper begins by re-casting aging-in-place as a process of place integration, based on a combination of geographical theory and John Dewey's philosophy of experience. Using empirical evidence from qualitative fieldwork and analysis of that evidence, the paper then introduces a theoretical model of the place integration process for older adults using ADC

Aging in a Transient Place: Reflections on Place Meaning, Third Places, and Social Connection Among Displaced and Older Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The number of people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and residential displacement is increasing. Unlike in larger cities, unhoused individuals in less dense areas may encounter difficulty accessing supports. This research examines experiences among displaced, formerly homeless, and PEH in a mid-sized town in Connecticut. Barriers and facilitators to aging-in-place are examined. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Recruited from a community sample, participants (N = 27) were asked to photograph their everyday lives during a 2-week period and were later interviewed about the

Adaptive Refurbishment for Aging in Place: Design Scenarios of Case Studies in Turin, Italy.

The "aging" world implies a rethinking of housing models, to meet the needs of the elderly for physical and mental well-being, independence, social interaction, safety, and accessibility. "Aging in place" is recognized by experts and international literature as a fundamental strategy for maintaining conditions of well-being and reducing public spending on health care. However, often the houses do not have the requirements to easily adapt to the needs that change with aging and possible downsizing of the family unit. For the elderly, maintaining their own home can become unsustainable due to pr

Socially active neighborhoods: construct operationalization for aging in place, health promotion and psychometric testing.

From the year 2003 when the first walkability scale was published to date, person-environment fit models and empirical research, some of which was published in Health Promotion International, have encapsulated healthy communities in 'neighborhood walkability'. While there is no doubt that neighborhood walkability positively influences health-seeking behaviors and health, recent models suggest that their measurement and conceptualization have not emphasized the role played by psychosocial and personal factors in aging in place. Thus, the development of scales measuring human ecosystem factors h

Fall Risk Identification with Innovative Technologies for Aging in Place: A Clinical Needs Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Falls are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence among older adults. While gait-monitoring technologies offer promise for early fall risk detection, adoption is hindered by usability, cost, and integration challenges. Few studies incorporate perspectives from both patients and providers to inform user-centred design. OBJECTIVE: To identify barriers, facilitators, and design considerations for implementing gait-monitoring and fall-assessment technologies among older adults, caregivers, and healthcare providers. METHODS: A qualitative needs assessment was conducted with

Social isolation and loneliness prevention among rural older adults aging-in-place: a needs assessment.

INTRODUCTION: The adverse effects of social isolation and loneliness (SI/L) have been documented among older adults in rural communities and contribute to poor health outcomes, premature disability and mortality, and increased burden on the healthcare system. The identification of factors contributing to SI/L among older adults can build the foundation for rural policymakers and leaders to allocate resources and develop tailored strategies more efficiently. The purpose of this article is to describe findings from a needs assessment designed to understand local factors that contribute to SI/L a

Meanings of Aging in the Right Place for Older Clients of a Temporary Housing Program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The concept of aging in place is acknowledged as the preference of older adults, yet without consideration of the intersections of diversity in later life, it is critiqued as unattainable, unrealistic, or even undesirable. This gave rise to the exploration of what is needed to age in the right place (AIRP). Building on existing research, we examined the meaning of AIRP to older adults (aged 55+ years) who have experienced homelessness. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted photovoice interviews with 11 residents of a temporary housing program in Metro Vancouver

Aging in the Right Place: A Conceptual Framework of Indicators for Older Persons Experiencing Homelessness.

Aging in place may not be a universally optimal goal nor accessible to all. Research has highlighted the significance of aging in the right place (AIRP) by recognizing that secure housing for older adults should support one's unique vulnerabilities and lifestyles. Despite the evolving conceptualization of AIRP for general populations of older adults, considerations of AIRP relevant for older people with previous or current experiences of homelessness are absent from the existing literature. Given this conceptual gap, we developed a framework of indicators relevant for older persons experiencin

Arterial Stiffness in Aging: Does It Have a Place in Clinical Practice?: Recent Advances in Hypertension.

Aortic stiffness increases markedly with age and is associated with excess risk for various adverse clinical outcomes, including heart disease, dementia, and kidney disease. Although evidence for adverse effects of aortic stiffening is overwhelming, integration of direct and indirect measures of aortic stiffness into routine clinical assessment has lagged behind the science. This brief review will examine recent evidence supporting the value of stiffness as an important new risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease and will offer suggestions for incorporating stiffness measures i
