Male Agonistic Behavior on Atlantic Cod Spawning Grounds.

The mating system of the iconic Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) has been described as a lek, a mating system where male-male agonistic interactions are expected. However, observing such behaviors directly in marine environments is challenging. So far, the evidence supporting the importance of agonistic interactions between males is mainly derived from laboratory studies with fish kept in close confinement, possibly elevating the observed levels and their perceived importance. In natural aquatic systems, agonistic interactions may be inferred from acoustic telemetry transmitters fitted with acceler

Observation of Agonistic Behavior in Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and Transcriptome Analysis.

Agonistic behavior has been identified as a limiting factor in the development of intensive L. vannamei aquaculture. However, the characteristics and molecular mechanisms underlying agonistic behavior in L. vannamei remain unclear. In this study, we quantified agonistic behavior through a behavioral observation system and generated a comprehensive database of eyestalk and brain ganglion tissues obtained from both aggressive and nonaggressive L. vannamei employing transcriptome analysis. The results showed that there were nine behavior patterns in L. vannamei which were correlated, and the figh

Circadian regulation of agonistic behavior in groups of parthenogenetic marbled crayfish, Procambarus sp.

Crustaceans have frequently been used to study the neuroethology of both agonistic behavior and circadian rhythms, but whether their highly stereotyped and quantifiable agonistic activity is controlled by circadian pacemakers has, so far, not been investigated. Isolated marbled crayfish (Procambarus spec.) displayed rhythmic locomotor activity under 12-h light:12-h darkness (LD12:12) and rhythmicity persisted after switching to constant darkness (DD) for 8 days, suggesting the presence of endogenous circadian pacemakers. Isogenetic females of parthenogenetic marbled crayfish displayed all beha

Bimodal signal requisite for agonistic behavior in a dart-poison frog, Epipedobates femoralis.

Animal acoustic signals play seminal roles in mate attraction and regulation of male spacing, maintenance of pairbonds, localization of hosts by parasites, and feeding behavior. Among vertebrate signals, it is becoming clear that no single stereotyped signal feature reliably elicits species-specific behavior, but rather, that a suite of characters is involved. Within the largely nocturnal clade of anuran amphibians, the dart-poison frog, Epipedobates femoralis, is a diurnal species that physically and vigorously defends its calling territory against conspecific intruders. Here we report that p

A quantitative analysis of agonistic behavior in juvenile American lobsters (Homarus americanus L.).

In these studies a quantitative analysis of agonistic (fighting) behavior in lobsters in presented as a first step in our attempt to relate patterns of behavior to underlying neurobiological mechanisms. The agonistic behavior of juvenile American lobsters (Homarus americanus L.) was studied in laboratory tanks at the New England Aquarium. Using video analyses and statistical techniques: (1) an ethogram of agonistic behavior was constructed; and (2) the temporal structure of the behavior was identified. We demonstrated that fighting in juvenile lobsters proceeds according to strict rules of con

Changes in the structure of the agonistic behavior of mice produced by D-amphetamine.

The effects of three acute doses of D-amphetamine (0.25, 1.5 and 3 mg/kg) were studied in a model of isolation-induced aggression in male mice. An ethopharmacological analysis of the encounters was carried out, which studied the frequency, total and mean duration of different behavioral categories, including the temporal distribution of attacks and the duration of inter-attack intervals. The results show a reduction in the total and mean duration of the Attack category and an increase in motor activity manifested by longer durations, both total and mean, of Non Social Exploration and shorter I

Repeated exposure to social stress alters the development of agonistic behavior in male golden hamsters.

In male golden hamsters, exposure to social stress during puberty alters aggressive behavior. Interestingly, agonistic behavior undergoes two major transitions during puberty: a decline in attack frequency and a shift from play fighting to adult-like aggression. Based on previous observations, we developed an approach for characterizing offensive responses as play fighting or adult-like. The present studies had two aims. First, we validated our approach by looking at the development of attack types during puberty. Second, we looked at the effects of repeated social stress on the development of

Partial agonistic effects of OPC-14597, a potential antipsychotic agent, on yawning behavior in rats.

The present experiments were performed to examine the behavioral effects of OPC-14597, which acts on dopamine receptors in rats. OPC-14597 administered subcutaneously (SC) at doses of 0.1-5 mg/kg elicited yawning, as did OPC-4392 (0.5-2 mg/kg, SC) and (-)-3-PPP (2.5-10 mg/kg, SC). These yawning responses were blocked by intraperitoneal (IP) pretreatment with haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg) but were increased by pindolol (20 mg/kg, IP) or reserpine (5 mg/kg, IP), which per se did not elicit yawning. The yawning induced by talipexole, a selective dopamine D2 receptor agonist, was inhibited by OPC-14597

Pharmaco-ethological analysis of agonistic behavior between resident and intruder mice: effect of anticholinergic drugs.

The resident-intruder paradigm was employed in order to evoke an agonistic behavior in mice. In this situation a resident male mouse has been cohabiting with a female for 5 weeks, and an intruder male mouse is introduced into the resident's home cage. A species-specific pattern of agonistic behavior was observed in all mice. The significance of cholinergic mechanisms in the mediation of the agonistic behavior was evaluated by pharmacological manipulations. Drugs were administered to resident mice. Scopolamine hydrobromide (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly suppressed the resident'

Prenatal sulfur dioxide exposure induces changes in the behavior of adult male mice during agonistic encounters.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important pollutants of the western countries, responsible for several cardiopulmonary diseases in humans. SO2 affects both young and adult people, causing low work productivity with social and economical costs extremely high for the communities. To test whether or not SO2 produces changes in social and/or agonistic behavior of laboratory animals, outbred CD-1 male mice were prenatally exposed to different SO2 concentrations (0, 5, 12, or 30 ppm) up to pregnancy day 14. At adulthood, following a 4-week isolation period, they underwent an aggressive encou

Voluntary wheel running improves cognitive deficits and abnormal agonistic behavior induced by social isolation stress in mice.

Reduced social interactions negatively impact adolescents. However, underlying mechanisms of social isolation (SI) stress and interventions remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of an exercise intervention on SI stress-induced behavioral abnormalities and the underlying mechanisms. We used male mice: Ctrl (N = 32), SI (N = 33), SI + voluntary wheel running (VWR) (N = 14), and SI + lurasidone (N = 7), and assessed emotion, anxiety, depression, social interactions, and cognitive functions using behavioral tests. In addition, we measured plasma corticosterone and performed immuno

Effects of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads on agonistic behavior in female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Four studies were conducted to determine the role of photoperiod, the pineal gland and the gonads in the regulation of intrasex agonistic behavior in female hamsters. In the first experiment animals maintained under Long or Short photoperiods were tested in same or opposite photoperiod pairs. Under both testing conditions, Short-day animals tended to exhibit a higher ratio of offensive to defensive behaviors, which was due primarily to a reduced level of defensive behavior in Short-day groups. In the second experiment animals under Long and Short photoperiods were tested following sham surgery

Naltrexone blocks amphetamine-induced hyperactivity, but not disruption of social and agonistic behavior in mice and squirrel monkeys.

Significant anatomical overlap of opioid and dopamine receptors as well as reciprocity of control over synthesis, metabolism, and release of opioid peptides and dopamine in brain suggests functional interactions between the two systems. In the first of two studies, the behavioral effects of amphetamine and naltrexone alone, and in combination were studied in established groups of socially interacting squirrel monkeys. Naltrexone (0.1-10.0 mg/kg, IM) increased locomotion and marking behavior in subordinate monkeys. The frequency of social initiatives directed at treated subordinate monkeys by u

Feeding behavior and agonistic interactions at the feed bunk are associated with hyperketonemia and metritis diagnosis in dairy cattle.

Hyperketonemia and metritis are common in the weeks after calving. This study tested if feeding and agonistic behaviors before calving were associated with the development of hyperketonemia (HYK) and metritis after calving. Holstein cows on 5 commercial farms were monitored for HYK (as identified using a cow-side β-hydroxybutyrate test) and metritis (using visual and olfactory assessment of vaginal discharge); both tests were conducted twice a week for 2 wk. Based on this assessment, we selected a balanced sample of cows that remained healthy (no signs of illness; n = 20), cows diagnosed with

Effects of long-term moderate alcohol consumption on agonistic and affiliative behavior of socially housed female cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

RATIONALE: The most widely used drug in the US is alcohol. Most people who use alcohol are light-to-moderate drinkers. One or two drinks/day is thought to be not only safe but potentially health-promoting. However, little is known about the chronic effects of moderate alcohol consumption. Alcohol, even in moderate doses, has immediate and robust effects on behavior. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of long-term moderate alcohol consumption on the social interactions of adult monkeys. METHODS: Forty-nine adult, ovariectomized monkeys lived in small, stable social groups for 31 months and v

The Use of Guanfacine to Mediate Anxiety-related Reactivity and Reduce Associated Agonistic Behavior in Two Pigtail Macaques (Macaca nemestrina).

Guanfacine, an α ₂adrenoceptor agonist, has been used to successfully treat self-injurious behavior in nonhuman primates, including macaques (Macaca mulatta) and baboons (Papio anubis). It does so by facilitating a correction to the dopaminergic system that mediates a reduction in impulsivity and reactivity. Given this, we assessed the potential efficacy of guanfacine to treat socially directed agonistic behavior in primates with an apparent reactive behavioral phenotype. We present data from 2 pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina): an intact adult male housed in a breeding group, and an experi

Effects of kappa receptor agonists on D1 and D2 dopamine agonist and antagonist-induced behaviors.

Striatal dynorphin-containing neurons receive dopaminergic inputs from the substantia nigra pars compacta and project primarily to the substantia nigra pars reticulata and entopeduncular nucleus. These neurons mainly express dopamine (DA) D1 receptors and thus dynorphin system stimulation might be expected largely to influence D1 receptor agonist or antagonist effects on motor function. It is well known the interaction existing between DA D1 and D2 drugs in the induction of behavioral effects. However, the effects of dynorphin on selective D1 and D2 DA agonist and antagonist-induced behaviors

Publicity and reports of behavioral addictions associated with dopamine agonists.

Background The development of behavioral addictions (BAs) in association with dopamine agonists (DAs, commonly used to treat Parkinson's disease) has been reported. A recent report presented data that these associations are evident in the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), a database containing information on adverse drug event and medication error reports submitted to the FDA. However, given that vulnerability to publicity-stimulated reporting is a potential limitation of spontaneous reporting systems like the FAERS, the potential impact of publici
