Development of low-cost formulations of plant growth-promoting bacteria to be used as inoculants in beneficial agricultural technologies.

Phosphorus is one of the main macronutrients for plant development. Despite its large deposits in soils, it is scarcely available for plants. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, belonging to the group of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), are capable of mobilizing deposits of insoluble phosphates in the soil. The use of PGPR as inoculants provides an environmentally sustainable approach to increase crop production. The effectiveness of inoculants depends on their proper production, formulation and storage in order to ensure the application of the required number of viable microbial cell

Yeasts with potential to be used as microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture in future.

Sustainability in agricultural production has emerged as one of the most significant concerns in the 21st Century, which recommends use of less chemical inputs having adverse effects on soil health and environment. The sustainability in the crop production system can be achieved by using beneficial soil microorganisms as microbial inoculants. A large number of studies have been carried out on bacteria and multicellular fungi which are used currently as microbial inoculants in sustainable agriculture. Yeasts, which are unicellular fungi are traditionally used for producing beverages and foods l

Improved growth and colchicine concentration in Gloriosa superba on mycorrhizal inoculation supplemented with phosphorus-fertilizer.

BACKGROUND: Gloriosa superba produces an array of alkaloids including colchicine, a compound of interest in the treatment of various diseases. The tuber of Gloriosa superba is a rich source of colchicine which has shown anti-gout, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activity. However, this promising compound remains expensive and Gloriosa superba is such a good source in global scale. Increase in yield of naturally occurring colchicine is an important area of investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of inoculation by four arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM), fungi, Glomus mossae, Glomus fascic

Development of on-farm AMF inoculum production for sustainable agriculture in Senegal.

The integration of endomycorrhizal fungi into agricultural practices as inoculum offers the potential to improve plant productivity while reducing reliance on expensive chemical fertilizers, which are not only economically costly but also detrimental to the environment. Mycorrhizal fungi play a crucial role in facilitating plant access to essential mineral elements (such as Phosphorus, Potassium, etc.) and water, particularly in soils characterized by arid and semi-arid conditions. where these resources are often limited. Despite the obvious advantages, the development of arbuscular mycorrhiza

Organic matter stabilization and phosphorus activation during vegetable waste composting: Multivariate and multiscale investigation.

The conversion of organic matter and P in the waste composting process affects the efficiency of the composted product. However, the addition of microbial inoculants may improve the conversion characteristics of organic matter and P. In this study, straw-decomposing microbial inoculant (SDMI) was added to investigate its effects on the organic matter stabilization and phosphorus activation during the composting of vegetable waste (VWs). Aliphatic carboxyl-containing compounds were degraded during composting, but the stability of the organic matter and P was improved. The addition of SDMI promo

Microbial Inoculants Differentially Influence Plant Growth and Biomass Allocation in Wheat Attacked by Gall-Inducing Hessian Fly (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae).

Beneficial root microbes may mitigate negative effects of crop pests by enhancing plant tolerance or resistance. We used a greenhouse experiment to investigate impacts of commercially available microbial root inoculants on growth and biomass allocation of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. [Cyperales: Poaceae]) and on survival and growth of the gall-inducing wheat pest Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say). A factorial design was used, with two near-isogenic wheat lines (one susceptible to Hessian fly, the other resistant), two levels of insect infestation (present, absent), and four inoculants con

Elucidating the Role of Bacterial and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculants in Mitigating Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Emissions in Agroecosystems Under Climate Change.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential approximately 300 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2). It is largely produced in agricultural soils through nitrification and denitrification processes driven by specific microbial functional genes (e.g., amoA, nirS, and nirK), which represent the main source of its emissions. The intensive use of nitrogen fertilizers increases nitrogen surplus in the ecosystem. This in turn accelerates the risk of nitrogen loss through leaching and volatilization, while also accelerating microbial pathways that drive N2O emissions in t

Microbial inoculants and struvite improved organic matter humification and stabilized phosphorus during swine manure composting: Multivariate and multiscale investigations.

The combined effects of microbial inoculants (MI) and magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP; struvite) on organic matter (OM) biodegradation and nutrients stabilization during biowaste composting have not yet been investigated. Therefore, the effects of MI and MAP on OM stability and P species during swine manure composting were investigated using geochemical and spectroscopic techniques. MI promoted the degradation of carbohydrates and aliphatic compounds, which improved the degree of OM mineralization and humification. MI and MAP promoted the redistribution of P fractions and species during comp

Use of beneficial microorganisms in bean cultivation: strategies employed to increase productivity.

The common bean is of great importance for human nutrition worldwide as its grain is a cheap source of protein, but it has a high-cost production system due to the use of synthetic inputs such as nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. An alternative to promote the sustainability of the production system and increase crop productivity is the use of co-inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to reduce and/or replace the use of nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. Since 2010, Brazil has stood out on the international stage with resear

Microbial inoculants for soil restoration: a risk-proportional stewardship framework integrating strain-resolved genomics and adaptive governance.

Global soil degradation and increasing reliance on chemical inputs threaten agricultural sustainability, driving interest in microbial inoculants as tools for soil restoration. These biological products have the potential to enhance nutrient cycling, improve soil structure, and support plant resilience, but their environmental release raises important safety and stewardship considerations. Here, we propose a risk-proportional framework for the responsible deployment of microbial inoculants grounded in release-based stewardship. The framework integrates genome-resolved strain identification, ex

PGPR inoculation and growth enhancement of crops cultivated in hydroponic systems.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are ubiquitous rhizosphere microorganisms that promote plant health through various mechanisms. Although the study of PGPR inoculants in soil has been done for ages, their application in hydroponic systems has received relatively limited attention. This review identifies PGPR inoculants that are commonly used in hydroponics, methods of application, and their effects on plant growth and nutrient use efficiency. Literature shows that PGPR inoculants improve plant performance in controlled hydroponic systems through the production of growth-stimulating

Insight into the mechanisms of insoluble phosphate transformation driven by the interactions of compound microbes during composting.

Phosphate-solubilizing (PS) microbes are important to improve phosphorus availability and transformation of insoluble phosphate, e.g., rock phosphate (RP). The use of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) as inoculants have been proposed as an alternative to increase phosphate availability in RP and composting fertilizers. In this study, the effect of compound PSB coinoculation and single-strain inoculation on the transformation of insoluble phosphate were compared in a liquid medium incubation and RP-enriched composting. The goal of this study was to understand the possible mechanisms of inso

Effects of different types of microbial inoculants on available nitrogen and phosphorus, soil microbial community, and wheat growth in high-P soil.

Irrational application of chemical fertilizers causes soil nutrient imbalance, reduced microbial diversity, soil diseases, and other soil quality problems and is one of the main sources of non-point pollution. The application of microbial inoculant (MI) can improve the soil environment and crop growth to reduce problems caused by irrational application of chemical fertilizers. Field experiments were carried out in high-phosphorus soils to study the effects of the addition of various MIs combined with chemical fertilizers on soil properties, wheat growth, and soil microbial composition and stru

Exploring the use of Leucobacter komagatae as an eco-friendly bio-inoculant to enhance sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) growth and yield under drought conditions.

Drought occurrence owing to climate change is a major constraint to attain sustainable agriculture, severely limiting crop growth and productivity. Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids), a key crop in tropical and subtropical regions, is particularly susceptible to drought stress because of its extended growth duration and high-water requirements. In this study, previously identified four plant growth promoting Leucobacter komagatae (ASBD2, ASBD15, ASBD19 and ASBD30) were evaluated under greenhouse conditions (pot culture study) over two consecutive years (2023-24 and 2024-25). Construction and application of soil-amending microbial inoculant for straw decomposition.

The current body of research on using composite microbial inoculants in soil to promote straw decomposition, potassium solubility, phosphorus solubility, and crop growth is relatively limited. In this study, we developed a composite microbial inoculant, designated HC-2, through the enrichment of the field with two strains of Bacillus. The agent displays multifunctionality and promotes rot prevention, solubilization of potassium and phosphorus, growth stimulation, and disease suppression. To further investigate its effects on soil fertility and microbial communities, field experiments were cond
