Subsurface agricultural irrigation drainage: the need for regulation.

Subsurface drainage resulting from irrigated agriculture is a toxic threat to fish and wildlife resources throughout the western United States. Studies by the U.S. Department of the Interior show that migratory waterfowl have been poisoned by drainwater contaminants on at least six national wildlife refuges. Allowing this poisoning to continue is a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act under U.S. Federal law. Critical wetlands and waterfowl populations are threatened in both the Pacific and Central flyways. The public is also at risk and health warnings have been issued in some locations.

Impact of Agricultural Irrigation on Anemia in Western Kenya.

Expanding agricultural irrigation efforts to enhance food security and socioeconomic development in sub-Saharan Africa may affect malaria transmission and socioeconomic variables that increase the risk of anemia in local communities. We compared the prevalence of anemia, Plasmodium falciparum infection, and indicators of socioeconomic status related to nutrition in communities in Homa Bay County, Kenya, where an agricultural irrigation scheme has been implemented, to that in nearby communities where there is no agricultural irrigation. Cross-sectional surveys conducted showed that anemia preva

Salinization of groundwater during 20 years of agricultural irrigation, Luxor, Egypt.

Groundwater salinization is a global problem accounting for 11-30% of the world's irrigated areas. Luxor region in Upper Egypt is one of such areas affected by salinity. Multivariate statistics indicate that groundwater is affected by intermixed processes; mineralization (salinization), fertilization, domestic wastes, and meteoric recharge. Temporal change in salinity and hydrochemical facies during 1997-2017 revealed aquifer salinization, due to the dissolution of salts from overlain saline soil and marine deposits underneath as well as up-coning of deep saline water. Increasing salinity over

Accumulation of Cd in agricultural soil under long-term reclaimed water irrigation.

Safety of agricultural irrigation with reclaimed water is of great concern as some potential hazardous compounds like heavy metals may be accumulated in soils over time. Impacts of long-term reclaimed water on soil Cd pollution were evaluated based on the field investigation in two main crop areas in Beijing with long irrigation history and on simulation results of STEM-profile model. Under long-term reclaimed water, Cd content in the top 20 cm soil layer was greatly elevated and was more than 2 times higher than that in the deep soil layer. There was very small differences between the field m

Risk of communicable disease infection associated with wastewater irrigation in agricultural settlements.

The incidence of enteric communicable diseases in 77 kibbutzim (agricultural communal settlements) practicing wastewater spray irrigation with partially treated nondisinfected oxidation pond effluent is compared with that in 130 kibbutzim practicing no form of wastewater irrigation. The incidence of shigellosis, salmonellosis, typhoid fever, and infectious hepatitis is two to four times higher in communities practicing wastewater irrigation. No significant differences are found for the incidence of streptococcal infections, tuberculosis, and laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza. Nor are dif

Anthropogenic disturbance transforms small agricultural irrigation impoundments into overlooked greenhouse gas hotspots.

Small water bodies are increasingly recognized as disproportionate sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, yet many anthropogenic aquatic systems embedded within agricultural landscapes remain poorly represented in regional carbon assessments. Small agricultural irrigation impoundments (SAIIs) are widespread across mountainous agricultural regions, but their emission magnitude and underlying controls remain largely unknown. Here, we conducted year-round measurements of CO2, CH4, and N2O concentrations and fluxes across 12 SAIIs characterized by contrasting levels of anthropogenic disturbanc

Agricultural sprinkler irrigation systems as environmental reservoirs and airborne dissemination sources of Legionella pneumophila.

Sprinkler irrigation systems are critical for modern agriculture but represent largely unrecognized aquatic environments capable of sustaining opportunistic human pathogens. Among them, Legionella pneumophila is of particular concern due to its ability to colonize engineered water systems, persist under fluctuating environmental conditions, and be transmitted through aerosols. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive microbiological and genomic investigation of irrigation ponds and ditches in a rural area of north-east Spain where two zones were sampled. Metagenomic profiling revealed highl

Design of a low-cost smart irrigation system based on NB-IOT for agriculture.

In the process of agricultural modernization, irrigation has the potential to promote utility of water and energy. It is essential to optimal use of resource sustainability. However, smart irrigation is faced with high running cost problems, which cannot meet demand of modern agricultural development. In this study, a low-cost smart irrigation system based on NB-IoT applied to agriculture is proposed. The system introduces three-layer module architecture to improve efficiency. And the experiment introduces multiple methods such as waveform stability test and communication distance test to opti

Adapting irrigated agriculture to climate change in arid regions: A hydroeconomic optimization approach.

Climate change presents considerable challenges to agricultural production. The integration of autonomous and planned adaptation is a critical concern for developing effective climate adaptation strategies in arid irrigated agriculture, which is subject to multifaceted stresses of water scarcity, salinization and climate change. To identify effective climate adaptation strategies, we developed an integrated hydroeconomic optimization model that incorporates agro-hydrological processes and climate change impacts into an economic optimization framework for climate-adaptive allocations of agricul

Does irrigated urban agriculture influence the transmission of malaria in the city of Kumasi, Ghana?

To verify the possible impact of irrigated urban agriculture on malaria transmission in cities, we studied entomological parameters, self-reported malaria episodes, and household-level data in the city of Kumasi, Ghana. A comparison was made between city locations without irrigated agriculture, city locations with irrigated urban vegetable production, and peri-urban (PU) locations with rain-fed agriculture. In the rainy as well as dry seasons, larvae of Anopheles spp. were identified in the irrigation systems of the urban farms. Night catches revealed significantly higher adult anopheline dens

Characterization of antibiogram fingerprints in Listeria monocytogenes recovered from irrigation water and agricultural soil samples.

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a foodborne pathogen and the etiologic agent of listeriosis, which can be disseminated within the agricultural environment particularly soil and irrigation water, contaminate farm produce and cause high mortality and morbidity among vulnerable individuals. This study assessed the incidence and antibiogram of L. monocytogenes recovered from irrigation water and agricultural soil samples collected from Chris Hani and Amathole District Municipalities (DMs) in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The distribution of presumptive L. monocytogenes in irrig

Vertical Distribution and Drivers of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Agricultural Soil Irrigated with Livestock Wastewater.

Livestock wastewater reuse could be a potential source for the distribution of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soil. In this study, soil samples were collected from different depths (0-60 cm) of farmland that has been subjected to long-term application of livestock wastewater. The vertical distribution of antibiotics, bacterial communities, and ARGs were assessed to identify the driving factors that could potentially influence the distribution of ARB and ARGs. The results demonstrated distinguished distributions of antib

Organophosphorus and Organochlorine Pesticides Bioaccumulation by Eichhornia crassipes in Irrigation Canals in an Urban Agricultural System.

A natural wetland in Mexico City Metropolitan Area is one of the main suppliers of crops and flowers, and in consequence its canals hold a high concentration of organochlorine (OC) and organophosphorus (OP) pesticides. There is also an extensive population of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), which is considered a plague; but literature suggests water hyacinth may be used as a phytoremediator. This study demonstrates bioaccumulation difference for the OC in vivo suggesting their bioaccumulation is ruled by their log K(ow), while all the OP showed bioaccumulation regardless of their log K(

Genotoxic and mutagenic potential of agricultural soil irrigated with tannery effluents at Jajmau (Kanpur), India.

It is a common practice in India to irrigate agricultural fields with wastewater originating from industries and domestic sources. At Jajmau (Kanpur), India, tannery effluent is used for irrigation purposes. This practice has been polluting the soil directly and groundwater and food crops indirectly. This study is aimed at evaluating the mutagenic impact of soil irrigated with tannery effluent. Soil extracts were prepared using four organic solvents (dichloromethane, methanol, acetonitrile, and acetone) and tested with Ames Salmonella/microsome test and DNA repair-defective E. coli k-12 mutant

Viral antibodies in agricultural populations exposed to aerosols from wastewater irrigation during a viral disease outbreak.

The presence of antibodies to eight enteroviruses (echovirus types 4, 7, and 9, coxsackievirus types A9, B1, B3, and B4, and hepatitis A virus) and varicella-zoster virus was determined during a two-year period, 1980-1981, in paired blood samples of 777 persons in selected agricultural communities (kibbutzim) in Israel. These communities were divided into several categories on the basis of wastewater utilization for sprinkler irrigation and/or fish ponds. Among the nine viral antibodies studied, there was a consistent and significant excess of antibodies to echovirus type 4 only, particularly

Water-soluble organic carbon release from mineral soils and sediments in an irrigated agricultural system.

Water interactions with soil and vegetation are greatly altered in agricultural watersheds compared to natural landscapes, which impacts sources and fates of organic carbon (OC). While mineral soil horizons in natural ecosystems primarily act as filters for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) leached from organic surface horizons, tilled soils largely lack an organic horizon and their mineral horizons therefore act as a source for both DOC and sediment to surface waters. Irrigated watersheds highlight this difference, as DOC and total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations simultaneously increase
