An epidemiological study on cutaneous diseases of agricultural workers authorized to use pesticides.

BACKGROUND: There is an increased risk for agricultural workers to acquire skin problems, but data so far published are still very scarce. OBJECTIVE: To individualize skin disorders that involved this class of workers. METHODS: Between 1990 and 1992, 426 agricultural workers, authorized to use pesticides, were examined. The control group consisted of 100 nonagriculture workers, who were age and sex matched. RESULTS: Some common dermatological diseases, such as vitiligo, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, had an incidence overlapping with that found in the controls. Irritant plant dermatos

Respiratory disease in agricultural workers: mortality and morbidity statistics.

To quantify the respiratory disease burden among agricultural workers, we examined the 1988-1998 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) "Multiple Cause of Death Data" and the 1988-1994 Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (NHANES III). Proportionate mortality ratios (PMRs) were determined for 11 respiratory conditions among 6 agricultural groups: crop farm workers, livestock farm workers, farm managers, landscape and horticultural workers, forestry workers, and fishery workers. Prevalence ratios (PRs) were determined for 12 respiratory conditions among 3 agricultur

[Respiratory diseases due to noxious agents in agriculture workers].

Better working and living conditions resulted by scientific technical revolution in agriculture. Nevertheless specialization of agricultural labor created a higher risk against inhalative hazards among few professions. Among biological hazards that are for instant zoonoses and ornithosis, Q-fever, tularemia and tuberculosis. A series of allergenic dusts is of vegetable origin. Among chemical hazards pesticides, fertilizers and disinfectants and other hazards are discussed. Among physical hazards in building and in repair shops for agricultural machines single risk is possible by silicosis and

Prevalence of kidney disease of unknown etiology in agricultural workers, Guatemala.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of kidney disease of unknown etiology in banana, melon, and tomato workers in north-eastern Guatemala, and to evaluate the usefulness of a cystatin C blood test for early detection of renal disease. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, farm-based study of 462 agricultural workers conducted from June to September 2021. Epidemiological and demographic characteristics of the workers were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Blood samples were obtained to determine glucose, creatinine and cystatin C levels. Anthropometric and clinical data w

De Quervain's tenosynovitis as an occupational disease in agricultural worker: A case report.

BACKGROUND: De Quervain's tenosynovitis is upper-limb disorder, more frequent in women. It is rarely recognized as an occupational disease. OBJECTIVE: In this paper we reported work related de Quervain's tenosynovitis in cow milker. METHODS: Ergonomic risk factors were assessed by utilizing assessment of repetitive tasks (ART) of the upper limbs method. Physical examination and imaging exams were used. RESULTS: We presented a 36-year-old female agricultural worker (workplace cow milker) exposed to work factors (forceful hand/wrist exertions, repetition, extreme postures) for 14 years. She w

Proportional mortality and years of potential life lost due to liver diseases among agricultural workers, Brazil, 2017 to 2022.

This study aimed to describe the profile and calculate the years of potential life lost (YPLL) due to liver diseases in Brazilian agricultural workers from 2017 to 2022. For this, we analyzed microdata available in the Brazilian Mortality Information System considering the underlying cause of death with codes K70-K77 (International Classsification of Disease, 10th revision - ICD-10) as the outcome of interest. Workers' profile was characterized according to sociodemographic variables and Brazilian regions, forming a comparison group with all other Brazilian workers aged from 18-69 years who di

Community health workers and promotores de salud: a tiered framework for infectious disease prevention and care among California agricultural workers.

Agricultural workers in the United States face a disproportionate burden of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV, coccidioidomycosis, viral hepatitis, and COVID-19, driven by occupational exposures, crowded housing, poverty, and limited healthcare access. Despite this burden, farmworkers have among the lowest rates of healthcare utilization of any US working population, and traditional clinic-based delivery models are poorly suited to the realities of agricultural labor. Community health workers (CHWs), known as promotores de salud in Latino communities, offer a well-established st

A Pilot Study to Explore the Application of Silicone Wristband-Based Chemical Exposure Assessment to Kidney Disease Epidemiology in Agricultural Workers.

Exposure assessment in kidney disease epidemiology remains challenging because kidney function impairment may alter urinary chemical excretion, limiting the utility of urinary biomonitoring and highlighting the need for alternative tools. We combined targeted and nontargeted analyses of silicone wristbands worn by 43 male agricultural workers to characterize their personal chemical exposome and evaluate preliminary associations of these exposures, urinary biomarkers, and kidney health. Kidney function was assessed via estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, mL/min/1.73m2). Pesticides were

Impact of heat and a rest-shade-hydration intervention program on productivity of piece-paid industrial agricultural workers at risk of chronic kidney disease of nontraditional origin.

OBJECTIVES: Assess the impact of environmental heat and a rest-shade-hydration (RSH) intervention against heat stress on productivity of piece-paid Mesoamerican sugarcane cutters. These workers are at a high risk of chronic kidney disease of non-traditional origin (CKDnt), from the severe heat stress they experience due to heavy work under hot conditions. RSH interventions in these populations improve kidney health outcomes, but their impact on productivity has yet to be examined. METHODS: We accessed routine productivity data from seed (SC, N = 749) and burned (BCC, N = 535) sugarcane cutter

CKDu-AGRI Study-a population-based cross-sectional study of chronic kidney disease and chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology among agricultural workers in Tamil Nadu, India.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease of unknown cause (CKDu) has been reported in "hotspots" around the world and linked to occupational heat stress, exposure to agrochemicals and environmental toxins. This was a systematic, statewide, population-based, observational study of agricultural workers in Tamil Nadu, to estimate the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and CKDu. METHODS: The state of Tamil Nadu was divided into five agroclimatic zones and stratified multi-stage cluster sampling was performed to select a representative study population. All participants underwent clinical evalua

[The modern characteristics of occupational morbidity of agriculture workers].

On the basis of updated data from 82 subjects of the Russian Federation multivariate analysis of occupational diseases of agricultural workers was implemented. It is established that in unhealthy work conditions are characteristic for 30% of workers in the agricultural sector. In the enterprises of agriculture, the percentage of workplaces not meeting sanitary hygienic standards made up to 35%. The high etiologic pathogenic relationship between nosological form of disease and working conditions in the profession is established. Most often, the occupational pathology was developed in agricultur

Zoonotic disease of occupational significance in agriculture: a review.

This manuscript presents an overview of occupational zoonotic diseases of agricultural workers (agricultural zoonoses). The primary intended use of this manuscript is to provide an educational frame work for public health officials in countries where there is a concern to establish or modify agricultural zoonoses control programs. The material is presented in two parts: 1) general concepts, (including definitions, classifications and ecological concepts), and 2) a description of selected agricultural zoonotic diseases. The general concepts and definitions, presented here in narrative form, are
