Causes and Flock Level Risk Factors of Sheep and Goat Abortion in Three Agroecology Zones in Ethiopia.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted to estimate the incidence of small ruminant abortion and identify its major causes and potential risk factors in goat and sheep flocks in three agroecology and production systems of Ethiopia. Information on pregnancy outcomes and management risk factors were collected for 299 goat and 242 sheep flocks. Blood samples were collected from 133 sheep and 90 goat flocks and tested for Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., Chlamydia abortus, and Toxoplasma gondii. A causal diagram outlined relationships between potential predictor variables and abortion in the flock

Agroecological drivers of aflatoxin contamination in maize-based systems: a review.

Aflatoxin contamination of maize remains a global food safety and public health challenge, particularly because it is a dietary staple food and feed ingredient produced across diverse agroecological zones. Although numerous mitigation strategies have been developed, contamination levels remain variable. This reflects complex interactions among climate, soil properties, crop management practices, plant physiological stress and rhizosphere microbial communities. This review synthesizes evidence on key agroecological drivers of aflatoxin contamination in maize, highlighting climate variability, s

Generative AI may bias crop protection advice away from agroecological approaches.

Generative AI holds ample potential to make agri-food systems more productive, resilient, and nature-friendly, but also poses risks. Here, following a methodical assessment of AI-generated advice on crop protection provided by ChatGPT-5, DeepSeek 3.1 up to 3.2-Exp, NormAI, KissanAI and VirtualAgronomist, we reveal systematic biases, faulty recommendations, and unethical machine behavior. As proprietary AI-powered advisories tend to favor commodified inputs and restrict the plurality of non-chemical alternatives, they may create informational biases that could, in turn, influence farmers' uptak

Eimeria stiedae in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) farmed in agroecological and industrial systems in Argentina.

Health in commercial and domestic rabbit farming is commonly affected by rabbit coccidiosis. For this study, 90 crossbreed rabbits (New Zealand x Californian) of 2.7-5 months of age and 1.5-2.5 kg from agroecological (n = 11) and industrial (n = 79) systems were slaughtered for consumption. Bile and liver samples were collected, filtered, and dissolved in potassium dichromate and distilled water for oocyst sporulation. Additionally, liver tissue samples fixed in 10 % buffered formalin were analysed for histopathological diagnosis. The overall prevalence of E. stiedae was observed in 24.4 % (22

Perceptions and beliefs about anaemia: A qualitative study in three agroecological regions of Ghana.

Little evidence exists concerning perceptions of anaemia in Ghanaian communities, which limits understanding of how to potentially improve health in settings with high anaemia prevalence. We explored lay perceptions of anaemia to understand local knowledge and beliefs and to provide an opportunity to inform interventions. A cross-sectional, qualitative study was conducted in selected communities in three regions of Ghana with high prevalence of anaemia. Forty-eight focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with adolescent girls, adult women of reproductive age and adult men (16 FGDs for ea

Spatio-temporal distribution and agroecological factors associated with canine leptospirosis in Great Britain.

Leptospirosis is an important global zoonotic disease that affects a wide range of mammalian species. Canine leptospirosis outbreaks have been reported after metereological events such as flooding (eg. in Brazil and the United States of America) suggesting an environmental association, but there has been no such study in Great Britain (GB). The distribution of cases across GB is also unreported. Objectives of this study were to: (1) assess the spatio-temporal variation of leptospirosis test submissions (2) explore associations between agroecological risk factors and distribution of different c

Assessing the carotenoid profiles and allelic diversity of yellow maize inbred lines adapted to mid-altitude subhumid maize agroecology in Ethiopia.

Biofortification of provitamin A in maize is an attractive and sustainable remedy to the problem of vitamin A deficiency in developing countries. The utilization of molecular markers represents a promising avenue to facilitate the development of provitamin A (PVA)-enriched maize varieties. We screened 752 diverse tropical yellow/orange maize lines using kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) makers to validate the use of KASP markers in PVA maize breeding. To this end, a total of 161 yellow/orange inbred lines, selected from among the 752 lines, were evaluated for their endosperm PVA and other

Phenotypic and genetic determinants of quinolone resistance in Escherichia coli at the human-swine interface of an agroecological farm.

Quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli are increasing in humans and livestock; however, their distribution and underlying mechanisms in shared environments remain incompletely characterized. We analyzed quinolone resistance in E. coli isolates from swine (n = 100) and humans (n = 65) associated with an agroecological farm in Morelos, Mexico. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for quinolones [nalidixic acid (NAL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP)], and the minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined. Phylogenetic grouping and genotypic analyses targeting gyrA mutations and plasmid-med

Prudent use and antimicrobial prescription practices in Ethiopian veterinary clinics located in different agroecological areas.

BACKGROUND: Understanding antimicrobial prescribing (AMP) practices and their prudent use in livestock can support the implementation of stewardship programs in veterinary medicine. Empiric therapy using antimicrobials is widely practiced in resource-poor settings, including Ethiopia. This could significantly contribute to the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the potential accumulation of residues in food. This study assessed AMP practices in Ethiopian veterinary clinics located in different agroecological zones (AEZs) as well as adherence to antimicrobial stewardship princi

Feeding habits and malaria parasite infection of Anopheles mosquitoes in selected agroecological areas of Northwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of the host-anopheline mosquitoes' interaction is important for assessing malaria transmission risk and guiding vector control. We assume that changes in malaria vector species' feeding habits, as well as the surrounding environment, have a substantial impact on varied malaria transmission. In this study, we determined the vertebrate host feeding patterns of anopheline mosquitoes to characterize entomologic risk factors for malaria in Jabi Tehnan, Northwestern Ethiopia. METHODS: Blood-fed anophelines surveyed during malaria surveillance in Jabi Tehnan district of nort

Review: Closing nutrient cycles for animal production - Current and future agroecological and socio-economic issues.

We face an urgent and complex challenge to produce large amounts of healthful animal and plant foods for an estimated 10 billion people by 2050 while maintaining essential ecosystem services. To compound this challenge, we must do so while not further degrading our environment and conserving essential nutrients such as copper, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc that are in short supply for fertilization. Much good research has been done, but to meet this challenge, we need to greatly increase on-farm and watershed-scale research including on-farm evaluations and demonstrations of the pu

Agroecological performance of small-scale dairy and dual-purpose systems in two contrasting zones in central Mexico.

Livestock production systems across the globe are facing several environmental, economic, and social challenges. Several studies have shown that the sustainability of small-scale dairy farms is quite challenging, especially when the production is diversified. Most CAET studies are highly heterogeneous in the methodologies used to evaluate their performance, especially across diverse agroecologies. Hence, it’s quite difficult to conclude the reasons behind the differences as were reported in several studies in the past. The Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE) was used to assess t

Integrated metabarcoding and culturomics reveal the rot-suppressive rhizoplane mycobiome of cassava across contrasting agroecological habitats.

INTRODUCTION: Cassava stem and root rot caused by Fusarium falciforme (Fusarium solani species complex) constrains production in waterlogged tropical systems. In Kerala, India, disease endemicity differs markedly between wetlands and uplands, yet the ecological basis of this variation remains unresolved. We tested whether rhizoplane mycobiome structure and functional stability govern pathogen suppression across these habitats. METHODS: Rhizoplane fungal communities from healthy and diseased plants in endemic wetlands and non-endemic uplands were profiled using Internal Transcribed Spacer ampl

Linking farmers' perceptions and management decision toward sustainable agroecological transition: evidence from rural Tunisia.

Global food systems face sustainability challenges like undernourishment, inequity, resource degradation, and pollution. Food production and consumption drive environmental change with greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and land-system shifts. The climate change crisis has intensified concerns about the ecological impact of these systems. Sustainable food networks, such as community-supported agriculture, are promoting sustainable production and consumption through short supply chains. International bodies like the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Consultative Group fo

Current knowledge and future research perspectives on cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) chemical defenses: An agroecological view.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is one of the most important staple crops worldwide. It constitutes the major source of carbohydrates for millions of low-income people living in rural areas, as well as a cash crop for smallholders in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations predicts that cassava plantations will increase and production systems will intensify in the future, highlighting the need for developing strategies that improve the sustainability of production. Plant chemical defenses hold the potential for developing pest managemen

Liriomyza Leafminer (Diptera: Agromyzidae) Parasitoid Complex in Different Agroecological Zones, Seasons, and Host Plants in Kenya.

Liriomyza leafminers (Diptera: Agromyzidae) are severe pests of vegetables and ornamentals worldwide. Previous studies revealed low leafminer parasitism across different agroecological zones in Kenya. The present paper reports on the composition of leafminer parasitoids at different elevations, in different seasons, and on different host crops. Surveys were conducted monthly from January to November 2012, and nine parasitoid species were recovered. Total mean parasitism in the study sites was 31.23 ± 1.03% from a total of 20 different vegetable Liriomyza-infested crops belonging to seven famil
