Occupational Exposures in the Culinary Underbelly: Air Pollution in Restaurants.

Occupational exposure to commercial cooking emissions has not been comprehensively studied, particularly in a Western context. This investigation measured the concentration and composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and black carbon (BC) in 18 New York City restaurants. Eight-hour gravimetric PM1,2.5,10 mass concentrations were measured in kitchen and dining areas, and PM1 was speciated using X-ray fluorescence. Evacuated canisters and XAD-2 sorbent tubes collected VOCs and PAHs, respectively, an

Biomarkers of occupational exposure to air pollution, inflammation and oxidative damage in taxi drivers.

Exposure to environmental pollutants has been recognised as a risk factor for cardiovascular events. 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) is a biomarker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from traffic-related air pollution. Experimental studies indicate that PAH exposure could be associated with inflammation and atherogenesis. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the biomarker of PAH exposure is associated with biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress and if these effects modulate the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in workers exposed to air pollutio

Impact of Indoor Air Pollution on Occupational Exposure: Rethinking the Major Health Threat for Airport Workers.

(1) Background: Airports workers are exposed to a mixture of airborne pollutants generated by aircraft operations, ground support equipment, road traffic, and indoor microenvironments. Indoor air quality, influenced by outdoor pollutant and ventilation dynamics, represents an important, but overlooked determinant of occupational exposure. Fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and xenobiotic responses, affecting not only the respiratory system, but also other organs. (2) Methods: This review examines the health effects of occupational exposure amo

The Effect of Human Occupancy on Indoor Air Quality through Real-Time Measurements of Key Pollutants.

The primarily emitted compounds by human presence, e.g., skin and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath, can react with typical indoor air oxidants, ozone (O3), and hydroxyl radicals (OH), leading to secondary organic compounds. Nevertheless, our understanding about the formation processes of the compounds through reactions of indoor air oxidants with primary emitted pollutants is still incomplete. In this study we performed real-time measurements of nitrous acid (HONO), nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2), O3, and VOCs to investigate the contribution of human presence and human activity, e

Occupational exposure to air pollution and respiratory health among urban street vendors in South India.

BACKGROUND: Street vending is a non-formal, vital domestic workforce in most developing nations. The street vendors operate in an unregulated environment and are frequently exposed to hazardous environmental pollutants, which is linked to chronic respiratory health problems. However, there is underreporting of this public health problem in literature, creating a blind spot in global health. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between air quality, occupational exposure characteristics, and pulmonary function among street vendors in an urban community. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was con

Occupational air pollutant exposure and seasonal variation in respiratory outcomes among brick kiln workers.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether workers in fixed chimney Bull’s trench kilns (FCBTK) experience greater occupational exposure to air pollutants and more pronounced respiratory impairment than those in zigzag kilns, and to evaluate how seasonal production variations affect the relationship between exposure and respiratory outcomes. We hypothesized that FCBTK workers would demonstrate higher pollutant exposure and greater respiratory dysfunction, with seasonal peaks exacerbating these differences. METHODS: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted in Jaranwala, district

Health Risks Associated with Occupational Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution in Commercial Drivers: A Systematic Review.

Ambient air pollution is a major global health problem and commercial drivers are particularly exposed to it. As no systematic assessment of the health risks associated with occupational exposure to ambient air pollution in this population had yet been carried out, we conducted a systematic review using a protocol-driven strategy. Papers published from inception to April 20, 2018 in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, African journals online, the Cochrane library, ISRCTN WHO ICTRP, and the Web of Science and Scopus databases were screened for inclusion by two independent reviewers. Air Pollution Emissions 2008-2018 from Australian Coal Mining: Implications for Public and Occupational Health.

Occupational exposure limits for respirable coal dust are based on exposure during working hours, but coal miners may experience additional community-based exposures during nonworking hours. We analyzed Australia National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) data for the years 2008-2018 to estimate air pollutants (metals, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter ≤ 10 micrometers (PM10) and ≤2.5 micrometers (PM2.5)) originating from coal mines. PM10 levels from community-based air monitors in Queensland and New South Wales were also compared between mining and nonmining communities. Results indicated that tons
