Evidence for bird-like air sacs in saurischian dinosaurs.

Among extant tetrapods, pneumatic postcranial bones are only present in birds, and they are osteological correlates of the diverticular lungs and pulmonary air sacs. The presence of postcranial pneumaticity in sauropod and theropod dinosaurs suggests that some form of air sac system was also present in the dinosaurian ancestors of birds. In particular, anatomical and evolutionary patterns of pneumatization in nonavian saurischian dinosaurs are diagnostic for specific air sacs, including the cervical, clavicular, and abdominal air sacs. Pneumatic hiatuses are gaps in the pneumatization of the v

An anatomical study of the respiratory air sacs in ostriches.

An accurate description of the number, location and relative position of the air sacs and their diverticula in the ostrich is essential for a better understanding of the pathogenesis of air sacculitis in this bird. The air sacs were studied in ten ostriches of varying ages by latex or silicone casting of the respiratory tract and dissection. Results revealed that the air sacs of the ostrich conform to the general pattern in birds. Cervical, lateral and medial clavicular, cranial and caudal thoracic, and abdominal air sacs are present. The left and right medial clavicular air sacs fuse with eac

The functions of laryngeal air sacs in primates: a new hypothesis.

A possible function of laryngeal air sacs in apes and gibbons was investigated by examining the relationships between air sac distribution, call rate, call duration and body weight in a phylogenetic context. The results suggest that lack of sacs in the smaller gibbons and in humans is a derived feature. Call parameters in primates, such as rate and duration, scaled to resting breathing rate (and therefore to body weight) only in species without air sacs, which appear to modify these relationships. Apes and larger gibbons may be able to produce fast extended call sequences without the risk of h

Air sacs are a key adaptive trait of the insect respiratory system.

Air sacs are a well-known aspect of insect tracheal systems, but have received little research attention. In this Commentary, we suggest that the study of the distribution and function of air sacs in tracheate arthropods can provide insights of broad significance. We provide preliminary phylogenetic evidence that the developmental pathways for creation of air sacs are broadly conserved throughout the arthropods, and that possession of air sacs is strongly associated with a few traits, including the capacity for powerful flight, large body or appendage size and buoyancy control. We also discuss

Air Sac Cystadenoma in a Pet Chicken.

A 2-yr-old female Brahma chicken was presented to the Poultry Mobile Clinic of the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University with a 3-wk onset of a wet sneeze that progressed to wheezing with a whistle-type sound. Upon observation, a cyst was found above the left clavicle in the area around the crop. The bird was euthanatized due to the progressive and chronic nature of the symptoms. Postmortem examination revealed an ovoid, soft to fluctuant, smooth, pale brown mass (2 × 0.9 × 0.8 cm), encased within the cranial membrane of the left cervical air sac. Histologically, fo

Gross morphological features of the air sacs of the hooded crow (Corvus cornix).

Air sacs are considered to be one of the controlling factors of bird behaviour and habits in addition to their roles in ventilation, regulating body temperature, swimming and flight. As a scavenger and an omnivorous flight bird, air sacs of the hooded crow were the focus of this study. Eight healthy, adult hooded crows were used to examine the morphological characteristics of the air sacs, which were examined grossly and with latex and cast preparations. In general, the morphological overview of the hooded crow air sacs is similar to other avian species. We observed nine air sacs; four paired

The Air Sac Primordium of Drosophila: A Model for Invasive Development.

The acquisition of invasive properties preceding tumor metastasis is critical for cancer progression. This phenomenon may result from mutagenic disruption of typical cell function, but recent evidence suggests that cancer cells frequently co-opt normal developmental programs to facilitate invasion as well. The signaling cascades that have been implicated present an obstacle to identifying effective therapeutic targets because of their complex nature and modulatory capacity through crosstalk with other pathways. Substantial efforts have been made to study invasive behavior during organogenesis

[Air sac midwifery technique for shortening course of labor].

Air sac midwifery technique is developed in this hospital to cut down the duration of labor (birth process). A special small sac is placed inside the ripe cervix and vagina of women of term pregnancy, and aerated slowly till a positive pressure of 16-25 kPa is reached. The cervix can be dilated to 6 to 8 cm, and the vagina 10 to 12 cm in 1 to 2 minutes. The labor course may be cut down by 8 to 10 hours, thus relieving the parturient from pain, lessening perineal laceration and perinatal mortality which is important for eugenics sake.

Low-tone air-bone gaps after endolymphatic sac surgery.

OBJECTIVES: We detected chronic low-tone air-bone gaps (LTABGs) in some patients with Meniere's disease after endolymphatic sac surgery. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanism of LTABGs after endolymphatic sac surgery. METHODS: We investigated 50 patients with Meniere's disease, who underwent surgery more than two years prior. LTABGs were defined as the three-tone-average=20dB formulated by (a+b+c)/3, where a, b, and c are ABGs at 0.25, 0.5, and 1kHz, respectively (ABG ±). The intra-operative finding was focused on identifying operculum (OPC ±). RESULTS: The ratio of pos

Natural resolution of air sac lesions caused by mycoplasma meleagridis in turkeys.

Lesions caused by Mycoplasma meleagridis were followed in one hatch of turkeys from one day to 20(1/2) weeks of age. Air sac lesion incidence increased from 20% at one day to 44% at six weeks of age with a slow decline to 10% at 10 weeks of age. Lesions were detectable on careful examination at 10-20% level to 20 weeks of age on laboratory examination, but at 20(1/2) weeks only 0.07% lesions were found in 1000 turkeys from the same hatch. Air sac lesion severity, based on an arbitrary 0.5,1,2,3,+scale, increased in intensity and spread of air sac involvement from a mean of 1.5 at day old to 2.

Evaluation of the air sac volume of penguins with respiratory diseases using computed tomography.

Captive penguins with respiratory diseases exhibit advanced pathological conditions upon the appearance of clinical signs. Therefore, the successful treatment of respiratory diseases remains difficult after the onset of clinical signs, leading to high mortality rates. In this study, we measured air sac volume using computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the respiratory condition of penguins. In a regular quarterly health checkup, blood samples were collected from 45 penguins housed at an aquarium in Hokkaido, Japan. A total of 12 penguins with abnormal blood parameters underwent CT. The air sac

[The punctum plug as an option for treating retrograde air flow from the lacrimal sac].

BACKGROUND: The causes of keratoconjunctivitis sicca are multifarious. Major causes include eyelid anomalies, Sjögren's disease, injuries, radiation or mucin deficiency. In our case, nasal positive airway pressure due to muscular dystrophy is described as another possible cause. PATIENT: A 32-year-old male patient with advanced Duchenne muscular dystrophy requires nasal continuous positive airway pressure ventilation due to loss of the auxiliary respiratory muscles. The patient presented because permanent air flow from the lower right lacrimal point resulted in epiphora and keratoconjunctivit

Response of air sac mesothelium to expansion of extracellular fluid volume in Gallus domesticus.

In this study, scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the effects of hydrothorax on the morphology of the air sac visceral mesothelium of Gallus domesticus. Anaesthetized chickens were subjected to acute hydrodynamic pulmonary oedema induced by expansion of the extracellular fluid volume with an infusion of Ringer's solution equal to 6.5% of body weight. Tissue samples from the visceral surface of the abdominal air sacs near their ostia were obtained and fixed after death induced by anaesthetic overdose. These were compared with similar samples from control "non-volume-loaded" birds.

Air sac nematode Monopetalonema alcedinis in a Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) in Maryland, USA.

Sporadic and geographically widespread reports of parasites affecting the Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) have been published but few have described details of the pathology. A female, adult kingfisher was found dead in a heavily wooded area of a zoo in Maryland, USA. At necropsy, numerous sexually dimorphic, 4.4-40.5-cm adult Monopetalonema alcedinis nematodes were found tightly wound within the coelomic cavity between organs and completely filling the caudal thoracic and abdominal air sacs. Abundant, 30-60-µm diameter, larvated, thick-walled ova were found in the bronchi and parabronch

Detection and Management of Air Sac Trematodes (Szidatitrema Species) in Captive Multispecies Avian Exhibits.

From 2 exhibits in a zoological collection, 2 juvenile fairy bluebirds ( Irena puella ) and 1 adult blue-grey tanager (Thraupis episcopus) died within 3 months of one another. The cause of death was attributed to air sac trematodes, which were identified as Szidatitrema species based on morphology of adult trematodes and miracidia isolated from a snail intermediate host. To determine the extent of trematodiasis in the collection, individual exhibits within the same building as the original presenting cases were assessed, with birds representing 27 avian species from 9 orders. Mechanisms and control of a novel vocalization: the singing mouse song is a whistle that depends on air sac inflation.

Vocalizations are ancient behaviours that require the complex coordination of breath and display. Understanding how laryngeal anatomy shapes vocalization provides insights into this diversity, its mechanisms and their evolution. Rodents are ideal for exploring this variation because of their diverse mechanisms and vocal structures. Here, we describe the laryngeal morphology and sound production mechanisms underlying the vocalizations of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina) and compare these results to those of other vocalizing mammals. We reconstructed the three-dimensional laryngeal mo
