Cardiac injuries in aircraft occupants resulting from aircraft accidents.

The author reports that relatively frequent injuries to the thorax and to the heart are established in autopsies of aircraft fatalities. A review of 128 autopsy protocols of aircraft accident fatalities revealed 111 cases of severe contact injuries to the thorax and 98 cases of traumatic injuries to the pericardium and the heart. Accepting the fact that persons injured if traffic accidents display cardiac injuries in 25% of the cases, the number of traumatic heart lesions inflicted in persons in aircarft accidents is three times as high, a fact which may be attributed to the far higher speeds

Aircraft disinsection.

Aircraft disinsection has been an international practice since the 1920s, the purpose of which is to protect public health, the environment, agriculture, and livestock by the eradication of disease vectors. Although most nations of the world have discontinued this practice, about 20 continue with this requirement. Aircraft disinsection is sanctioned by international law with the World Health Organization (WHO) publishing general procedural guidelines in the International Health Regulations (IHR). There are currently four acceptable procedures: blocks away, top of descent, on arrival, and resid

Homebuilt aircraft crashes.

BACKGROUND: While the number of general aviation crashes has decreased over the 5 yr prior to 1993, the total number of homebuilt aircraft crashes has increased by nearly 25%. Research was undertaken to analyze these crashes and identify causal factors or unique problems associated with homebuilt aircraft. METHODS: Some 200 National Transportation Safety Board computer records and two-page descriptive briefs were analyzed for homebuilt aircraft crashes during 1993. Using descriptive epidemiology, variables were looked at in detail and comparisons were made with general aviation crashes during

[Simulator sickness in the aircraft training of military and civil pilots of various types of aircraft].

BACKGROUND: With the rise in popularity and availability of simulators for the aircraft training of pilots, numerous side effects of that technology have been noted among their users. The symptoms of simulator sickness are similar to the symptoms of motion sickness. Dizziness, nausea, as well as spatial disorientation and a limited capacity for concentration may be observed. However, those symptoms depend on individual user's predispositions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of the research was to assess the probability of occurrence of simulator sickness during exercises in virtual reality, and

Personal Flying Accident Rates of Selected Light Sport Aircraft Compared with General Aviation Aircraft.

BACKGROUND: The issue of expanding flight privileges that do not require medical oversight is currently an important topic, especially in the United States. We compared personal flying accident rates in aircraft with special light sport aircraft (SLSA) and experimental light sport aircraft (ELSA) airworthiness certificates to accident rates for personal flying in other general aviation (GA) aircraft. METHODS: To calculate accident rates, personal flying hours were obtained from the annual FAA General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Surveys, and numbers of personal flying accidents were obtaine

Health consequences of aircraft noise.

INTRODUCTION: The ever-increasing level of air traffic means that any medical evaluation of its effects must be based on recent data. METHODS: Selective literature review of epidemiological studies from 2000 to 2007 regarding the illnesses, annoyance, and learning disorders resulting from aircraft noise. RESULTS: In residential areas, outdoor aircraft noise-induced equivalent noise levels of 60 dB(A) in the daytime and 45 dB(A) at night are associated with an increased incidence of hypertension. There is a dose-response relationship between aircraft noise and the occurrence of arterial hyper

Mortality among aircraft manufacturing workers.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the risk of cancer and other diseases among workers engaged in aircraft manufacturing and potentially exposed to compounds containing chromate, trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and mixed solvents. METHODS: A retrospective cohort mortality study was conducted of workers employed for at least 1 year at a large aircraft manufacturing facility in California on or after 1 January 1960. The mortality experience of these workers was determined by examination of national, state, and company records to the end of 1996. Standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) were

Infant crying during aircraft descent.

The phenomenon of infant crying during aircraft descent is described, based on in-flight observations of 37 infant-mother pairs and mother interviews. The hallmark was crying during descent that was not alleviated by mothers' strategies that had been effective prior to descent. A significant relationship was found between bottle feeding and crying during descent; 18 (78%) of nonfeeding infants cried, compared with 4 (29%) of the bottle feeders. All infants with colds cried during descent, and descent crying always occurred more than 9 minutes after adults perceived the need to clear their ears

[Glaucoma and aircraft pilot fitness].

Two completely different questions arise when considering glaucoma and fitness to fly: Firstly, what is the risk for a passenger with glaucoma? Secondly, what is the flight safety risk connected with pilots suffering from glaucoma? National requirements and international standards pay little regard to this disease. This is astonishing, given that the perception of flight information in the peripheral visual field is of great importance in the cockpit. On one hand, diagnostic glaucoma examinations for pilots are mainly insufficient, and on the other, progressive visual field deficiencies may go

Suicide by aircraft: a case report.

A 36-year-old pilot took his plane on a brief, unauthorized flight that ended in a high-speed vertical crash next to the runway. A retrospective "psychological autopsy" yielded strong presumptive evidence of an unrecognized depression in a man with manipulative and mildly antisocial characteristics. His withdrawal from his usual patterns of behavior was, instead, regarded as a desirable return to "normal" behavior. This case report includes comments on the role of the psychological autopsy in aircraft accident investigation, anniversary reactions, the use of psychiatric diagnosis to support th

Suicide by aircraft: a comparative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is the 11 th leading cause of death in the United States. The objective of this study is to document the characteristics of aviation-related suicides and suicide attempts. METHODS: Aviation accidents reported by the National Transportation Safety Board between 1983 and 2003 were screened for cases in which suicide was listed as a probable cause. For each suicide case, two accidents were randomly selected as controls, matched on sex of pilot, type of flight, state, and year of occurrence. Mantel-Haenszel summary Chi-square tests were used to compare cases to controls. Con

Exposure to aircraft noise and risk of psychiatric disorders: the Elmas survey--aircraft noise and psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Evidence that high levels of aircraft noise lead to psychiatric disorders in the community is contradictory. The aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of mental disorders in a sample living in the immediate surroundings of an airport compared with those from a sample of residents from the same region who had not been exposed to the risk of aircraft noise. METHODS: Exposed subjects were residents in Giliaquas in the vicinity of Elmas airport (Sardinia, Italy). The control sample was drawn from a database of a large community survey, after matching for sex, age a

Xenobiotic Hazards in Aircraft Cabin Air.

Most airline passengers and crew assume that the air in the cabin is free from harmful or hazardous substances, as is mandated by airworthiness regulations. While fresh air entering the cabin is sterile (and if recirculated is usually efficiently filtered to remove microorganisms), if the fresh air is bled off the turbine compressors (as is the case in about 95% of airliners currently in service), it may be contaminated with traces of engine oil and ultrafine particles abraded from the turbine blades, and possibly traces of hydraulic fluid leaking from servo systems. Engine oil contains tricre

Cardiovascular consequences of aircraft noise exposure.

The results from epidemiological studies suggest that environmental noise including aircraft, railway, road traffic, wind turbine, and leisure-related noise is a growing public health concern. According to the WHO, at least 100 million people in the European Union are affected by traffic noise levels above the WHO-recommended thresholds. Environmental noise can adversely affect physical and mental health, as well as wellbeing. Chronic low-level noise exposure typical for most environmental sources is associated with psychophysiological stress causing non-auditory or indirect noise effects lead

Smoke toxicity of common aircraft carpets.

The smoke toxicity of three carpets commonly available for use in commercial aircraft was determined by ignition in a specially designed smoke apparatus. Rats were exposed for 15 min to three different fuel loads, on a weight-to-volume basis. Evaluation was by mortality, time of useful function (TUF), and unconsciousness. No deaths were noted with carpets A or C at 64 mg/l or 128 mg/l fuel load concentration; at 256 mg/l, 42% mortality resulted from carpet A and 4.5% with carpet C. Exposure to carpet B resulted in a mortality of 4.3%, 72.5%, and 100% at the three concentrations. The TUF data a

Suicide and Murder-Suicide Involving Aircraft.

BACKGROUND: This is a systematic review of suicide and homicide-suicide events involving aircraft. In aeromedical literature and in the media, these very different events are both described as pilot suicide, but in psychiatry they are considered separate events with distinct risk factors. METHODS: Medical databases, internet search engines, and aviation safety databases were searched in a systematic way to obtain relevant cases. Relevant articles were searched for additional references. RESULTS: There were 65 cases of pilot suicide and 6 cases of passengers who jumped from aircraft found. Th

[Aircraft noise: changes in biochemical parameters].

The effect of stress caused by aircraft noise was studied on 14 female and 11 male volunteers, who were of a age ranging from 21 to 42 years and of a mean age of 25 years. The volunteers were exposed to an aircraft simulator that stimulated the low level flight of an air force plane and produced a maximum noise level of 105 dB(A) for 3 sec. in a short time. Before and immediately after the exposure, the concentration of ACTH was measured by means of a radioimmunoassay. The ACTH is a hormone, responsible for initiating a chain reaction that is characteristic for a stress reaction. In 100% of th
