Projected alcohol demand in college students with heavy drinking.

Measures of the relative reinforcing value of alcohol (i.e., alcohol demand) are associated with concurrent and future rates of alcohol use. Given that college-age young adults may fail to predict escalation of substance use, the present project explores the novel construct of projected future demand by college students who engage in heavy drinking and whether it can predict future alcohol use. During an initial session, participants completed a standard alcohol purchase task, a projected alcohol purchase task (i.e., "three months from now"), and measures of past-month alcohol consumption and

Reward System Activation in Response to Alcohol Advertisements Predicts College Drinking.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we assess whether activation of the brain's reward system in response to alcohol advertisements is associated with college drinking. Previous research has established a relationship between exposure to alcohol marketing and underage drinking. Within other appetitive domains, the relationship between cue exposure and behavioral enactment is known to rely on activation of the brain's reward system. However, the relationship between neural activation to alcohol advertisements and alcohol consumption has not been studied in a nondisordered population. METHOD: In this cro

Social context of drinking and alcohol problems among college students.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how social contexts of drinking are related to alcohol use disorders, other alcohol-related problems, and depression among college students. METHODS: Logistic regression models controlling for drinking frequency measured the association between social context and problems, among 728 current drinkers. RESULTS: Drinking for social facilitation was associated with drinking and driving and housing violations. Drinking in the context of motor vehicles was associated with alcohol abuse/ dependence. Drinking in a context of emotional pain was associated with clinical depressio

Mixing an energy drink with an alcoholic beverage increases motivation for more alcohol in college students.

BACKGROUND: There has been a dramatic rise in the consumption of alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmEDs) in social drinkers. It has been suggested that AmED beverages might lead individuals to drink greater quantities of alcohol. This experiment was designed to investigate whether the consumption of AmEDs would alter alcohol priming (i.e., increasing ratings of wanting another drink) compared with alcohol alone. METHODS: Participants (n = 80) of equal gender attended 1 session where they were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 4 doses (0.91 ml/kg vodka, 1.82 ml/kg energy drink, 0.91 ml/kg vod

The Association Between Internal Restlessness, Drinking Motives, and Alcohol Use Outcomes in College Students.

BACKGROUND: ADHD and alcohol use are prevalent among college students, but few studies have examined internal restlessness (i.e., the mental discomfort experienced when suppressing hyperactive behaviors) in relation to alcohol use. Consequently, the current study sought to examine a path model testing associations between internal restlessness, drinking motives (i.e., coping, social, enhancement, and conformity), alcohol use, and consequences in college students. METHODS: Two hundred and ninety-one college students completed an online survey regarding their use of alcohol. RESULTS: After con

Harmful Use of Alcohol as Predictor of Presex Drinking in Mexican Young College Women.

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify whether the harmful use of alcohol is associated with an increased probability of presex drinking in Mexican young women. METHOD: This was a study with a predictive design. Multiple logistic regressions were performed in a random sample of 304 young college women (between the ages of 18 and 24 years) from Guanajuato and Tamaulipas, Mexico. Participants completed a sociodemographic data survey and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test questionnaire. RESULTS: Women with a pattern of harmful use of alcohol were more likely to report drinking be

NIAAA's rapid response to college drinking problems initiative: reinforcing the use of evidence-based approaches in college alcohol prevention.

OBJECTIVE: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) created the Rapid Response to College Drinking Problems initiative so that senior college administrators facing an alcohol-related crisis could get assistance from well-established alcohol researchers and NIAAA staff. METHOD: Based on a competitive grant process, NIAAA selected five teams of research scientists with expertise in college drinking research. NIAAA then invited college administrators to propose interventions to address a recently experienced alcohol-related problem. Between September 2004 and September 2005

Alcohol-Specific Masculine Norms and Drinking Motives among College Men.

Introduction: Researchers posit that adherence to traditional masculine norms can contribute to college men's disproportionate risk for alcohol use and consequences; however, historically they have measured general masculine norms (e.g., winning, risk-taking) that are distal to alcohol use behaviors. Alcohol-specific masculine norms of excess (e.g., "A real man can drink a lot") and control (e.g., "A real man knows when he has had enough to drink and is able to stop") are conceptually more proximal to alcohol use behaviors and thus allow for a more nuanced examination of how masculinity relate

The Combined Impact of Campus and State Alcohol Policies on College Drinking and Harms.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about what policies and practices may prevent alcohol-related harms to others. This study tested whether campus alcohol policies were associated with alcohol use and alcohol-related harms to others among college students and whether these associations differ in states with weak versus strong alcohol policies. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a 2021 probability-based survey of U.S. college students. The main predictor was a campus alcohol policy score that combined 33 policies. Alcohol use outcomes included past 30-day volume and binge drinking f

Sex Differences in the Association Between Drinking Motives, Protective Behavioral Strategies, and Alcohol Outcomes in a Hazardous Drinking College Sample.

BACKGROUND: Drinking motives and protective behavioral strategies have been shown to impact the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption in young adults, including college students who are at high risk for hazardous drinking. However, how men and women employ different protective behavioral strategies with respect to their drinking motives, and whether these impact drinking patterns differentially, are currently understudied. METHODS: Data from 109 college students with hazardous drinking patterns were analyzed to examine effects of drinking motives, protective behavioral strategies, sex

"Drink like a man!" masculine drinking norms, alcohol protective behavioral strategies, and severity of hazardous alcohol use among college men.

Learned alcohol-specific gender norms can impact drinking behaviors in nuanced ways. Studies have shown that endorsing the masculine drinking norm (MDN) of excess (e.g., "A real man can drink a lot") is positively associated with alcohol use, while the inverse was found for endorsing the MDN of control (e.g., "A real man knows when he's had enough to drink and is able to stop"). Studies have also indicated that using alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS) can reduce the risk for heavy drinking and that men tend to use alcohol PBS less often than women. Thus, there is a need to examine

Psychopathology associated with drinking and alcohol use disorders in the college and general adult populations.

This paper examines the associations between past-year drinking status and the prevalence of 15 different past-year anxiety, mood and personality disorders, using a large (n = 43,093) nationally representative sample of the U.S. population. The prevalence of these disorders and their associations with drinking are compared for college students 18-29 years of age, other youth 18-29 years of age, and adults 30 years of age and older. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and past-year tobacco and illicit drug use, only drinkers with alcohol dependence experienced an excess risk of

Family history of alcohol abuse associated with problematic drinking among college students.

Studies examining family history of alcohol abuse among college students are not only conflicting, but have suffered various limitations. The current report investigates family history of alcohol abuse (FH+) and its relationship with alcohol expectancies, consumption, and consequences. In the current study, 3753 student participants (35% FH+), completed online assessments. Compared to FH- same-sex peers, FH+ males and FH+ females endorsed greater overall positive expectancies, consumed more drinks per week, and experienced more alcohol-related negative consequences. Further, FH+ females evalua

Drink and be merry? Gender, life satisfaction, and alcohol consumption among college students.

This study examined the impact of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems on several domains of life satisfaction (LS) in a sample of 353 college students. Alcohol use was associated with lower general satisfaction and anticipated future satisfaction among women. Female abstainers reported higher general and anticipated future satisfaction than did female heavy drinkers. Female students' alcohol use was unrelated to their academic, family, dating, or social satisfaction. Drinking among men showed a positive, curvilinear relation to social satisfaction but was unrelated to other domains of LS.

Hangover sensitivity after controlled alcohol administration as predictor of post-college drinking.

Predicting continued problematic levels of drinking after the early 20's could help with early identification of persons at risk. This study investigated whether hangover insensitivity could predict postcollege drinking and problems beyond the variance due to drinking patterns. In a preliminary study, 134 college seniors from a laboratory study of hangover (Time 1) were contacted and assessed 1-4 years (M = 2.3) later (Time 2). Hangover severity was studied after controlled alcohol administration to a specific dose while controlling sleep and environmental influences. Hangover severity at Time

Do protective behavioral strategies mediate the relationship between drinking motives and alcohol use in college students?

OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol use among college students represents a public health problem on American college campuses. Use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) has been shown to be related to reduced alcohol use and fewer alcohol-related problems, but the relationship of PBS to other alcohol-related constructs is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of PBS mediated the relationship between positively and negatively reinforcing drinking motives and both alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. METHOD: Data were collected on 254 undergraduate students at a lar

Brief Motivational Interventions Are Associated with Reductions in Alcohol-Induced Blackouts Among Heavy Drinking College Students.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced blackouts, a form of anterograde amnesia that restricts the encoding of short-term memories into long-term ones, are among the most severe alcohol-related consequences. College students are at high risk of experiencing alcohol-induced blackouts, and there is a need to determine whether alcohol interventions can effectively reduce blackouts in this population. The current study uses data from 3 randomized clinical trials to examine the effect of various intervention approaches on alcohol-induced blackouts. METHODS: Four interventions were compared over 3 studies: (i

Examining Alcohol-Related Blackouts and Drinking Motives Over Time Among College Women.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences among college women continues despite prevention efforts. One common consequence, alcohol-related blackouts (ARBs), are periods of alcohol-activated anterograde amnesia. The purpose of the current project is to extend the ARB and drinking motive literature by examining their relationship over time. METHOD: A sample of 424 women (88.9% White) completed online surveys assessing their ARBs and drinking motives weekly for 10 weeks. A series of hierarchical generalized linear models were estimated to examine the between-person and withi

College Status, Perceived Drinking Norms, and Alcohol Use among Sexual Minority Women.

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults are at elevated risk for drinking compared to heterosexual young adults, and this discrepancy is particularly striking for sexual minority women (SMW). Perceived social norms are strong predictors of young adult alcohol use, especially among college students. The college environment is often one where increases in alcohol use are seen, but the impact of college status on SMW's drinking has been understudied. The present study explored patterns of alcohol use and consequences among SMW and the extent to which social norms relate to use and consequences. P
