Melatonin and alcohol-related disorders.

This review concerns the current knowledge of melatonin and alcohol-related disorders. Chronobiological effects of ethanol are related to melatonin suppression and in relation to inflammation, stress, free radical scavenging, autophagy and cancer risk. It is postulated that both alcohol- and inflammation-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) alters cell membrane properties leading to tissue dysfunction and, subsequent further ROS production. Lysosomal enzymes are often used to assess the relationships between intensified inflammation states caused by alcohol abuse and oxidative s

Drinking pattern and alcohol-related medical disorders.

Although heavy alcohol intake is known to be one of the most common causative factors of liver disease, pancreatitis, upper gastrointestinal and neurological disorders, the influence of the drinking pattern is largely unknown. The study investigated the relationship of alcohol-related medical disorders in alcoholics and their drinking pattern. Two hundred and forty-one chronic alcoholics were referred consecutively for detoxification and their drinking pattern was sufficient for them to be included in this study. History of alcohol abuse as well as drinking behaviour in the last 6 months were

Comparison of Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Diagnostic Criteria.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, increased attention has been focused on the diagnosis of the most prevalent category of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders (ARNDs). In 2013, proposed criteria for neurodevelopmental disorders associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-PAE) were included in the appendix of the latest revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The concordance of the 2 sets of criteria is unknown. This study examines the overlap in diagnostic criteria for ND-PAE and the ARND Behavioral Checklist in children. METHODS:

[Diagnostic and treatment approaches to alcohol-related disorders].

BACKGROUND: Due to their high prevalence alcohol related disorders (dependent, harmful and at risk drinking) are of major importance for the general practitioner (GP). The aim of this study was to examine the diagnostic and treatment strategies employed by the general practitioners. METHODS: A standardized 10-page questionnaire was mailed to a representative sample (n = 1232) of the general practitioners in south-west Germany. They were asked about diagnostic and therapeutic procedures they had employed in the last patient seen. Further questions regarded patient-related and structural proble

HMGB1 Protein in Alcohol-Related Psychopathological Disorders at Various Stages of Alcohol Dependence.

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption in alcohol dependence (AD) is associated with various molecular and cellular dysfunctions. One of the key mechanisms involved is the extracellular release of HMGB1 (high-mobility group box 1), a nuclear protein that acts as a proinflammatory signaling molecule. However, the dynamics of peripheral HMGB1 levels across different stages of AD and its association with psychopathological symptoms remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate peripheral HMGB1 concentrations in patients with AD during different disease stages - alcohol withdrawal

Managing Alcohol Use Disorder in Alcohol-Related Liver Disease.

This review article focuses on the management of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in patients with comorbid alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). We highlight the importance of different screening tools for AUD in addition to the role of FDA and off-label medications for AUD and ALD treatment. For long-term recovery, we also speak to the importance of non-pharmacological interventions, including mutual aid organizations such as alcohols anonymous, peer recovery specialists, and emerging digital tools. Through a combination of these different tools, we can aid in patients in alcohol consumption red

[The Danish Health Authority: prevention of alcohol intake and treatment of alcohol-related disorders].

Consumption of alcohol has major consequences for public health in Denmark, and many Danes still drink too much, given the health consequences. The Danish Health Authority supports the municipalities' effort with prevention of misuse of alcohol intake and treatment of alcohol-related disorders. Among other things, we monitor the prevalence of alcohol intake in the population, compose materials for counselling and financially support projects, which develop new methods for prevention and treatment in relation to alcohol. The Danish Health Authority withholds an ongoing focus on prevention of al

[Phosphatidyethanol in the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol-related disorders].

The diagnosis and treatment of alcohol use disorders often pose complex questions and challenges for healthcare professionals. In addition to the established indirect biomarkers (e. g. carbohydrate-deficient transferrin [CDT]), clinical research in recent years has produced increasingly valuable findings on the use of direct biomarkers. In this regard, the marker phosphatidyltethanol (PEth), a lipid metabolite that is formed during the breakdown of ethanol, is stored in the erythrocytes, should be emphasized in particular. The advantage of targeted use of PEth in general medical and psychiatri

Cannabis use and alcohol-related outcomes among sober living house residents with alcohol use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supporting cannabis substitution along with liberalized cannabis laws have left recovery homes such as sober living houses (SLHs) in a difficult position regarding policies relating to cannabis use among SLH residents. Moreover, there are few studies of cannabis use among SLH residents that can be used to inform cannabis use policies. Here we assess whether cannabis is related to alcohol use among SLH residents. METHODS: Data came from N = 205 SLH residents entering 28 SLHs in Los Angeles from 2021 to 2023. Interviews were at baseline and one-, two-, three-, and six-month

The relation between alcohol problems and the anxiety disorders.

The idea that people suffering from anxiety have a proclivity to consume alcohol to relieve their symptoms is supported by reports showing high comorbidity rates of alcohol and anxiety problems. The authors reviewed relevant epidemiologic surveys, family studies, and field studies and conclude that the relationship between alcohol problems and anxiety appears to be variable among the anxiety disorders. In agoraphobia and social phobia, alcohol problems appear more likely to follow from attempts at self-medication of anxiety symptoms, but panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder may be m

Nonhepatic Manifestations of Alcohol Use Disorder and Alcohol-Related Liver Disease.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) impacts many patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), affecting more than just the liver. ALD and AUD influence multiple organ systems, including neurologic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hematologic, endocrine, and psychiatric. Recognizing these extrahepatic manifestations is essential for comprehensive patient care. Understanding how alcohol use affects these systems helps health care providers manage the full spectrum of health issues in patients with ALD. Addressing both liver-related and systemic effects of alcohol use ensures a more thorough an

Burden of Alcohol-Related Liver Disease and Alcohol Use Disorder in Asia.

BACKGROUND: As alcohol consumption continues to rise rapidly in Asia, research into its significant consequences, alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is still limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the burden of alcohol-related liver disease and alcohol use disorder in Asia from 2000 to 2021. METHODS: We analyzed data from the global burden of disease (GBD) Study 2021 to assess age-standardized prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates for alcohol-related liver disease and alcohol use disorder in Asia from 2000 to 2021. RESULTS: In 2021, there were approxim

Incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome and prevalence of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder.

We critique published incidences for fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and present new estimates of the incidence of FAS and the prevalence of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND). We first review criteria necessary for valid estimation of FAS incidence. Estimates for three population-based studies that best meet these criteria are reported with adjustment for underascertainment of highly exposed cases. As a result, in 1975 in Seattle, the incidence of FAS can be estimated as at least 2.8/1000 live births, and for 1979-81 in Cleveland, approximately 4.6/1,000. In Roubaix, France (for

Neuroinflammation in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and related novel therapeutic approaches.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term to describe the neurological effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). It has been extensively characterized that PAE causes cell proliferation disruption, heterotopias, and malformations in various brain regions and there is increasing evidence that neuroinflammation is responsible for some of these neurotoxic effects. Despite evidence of its importance, neuroinflammation is not usually considered at diagnosis or treatment for FASD. Here, we discuss the literature regarding anti- inflammatory drugs and nutraceuticals, which hold pr

Fathers' alcohol consumption and risk of substance-related disorders in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed how children are affected by parental alcohol consumption without clinically diagnosed alcohol problems, especially in relation to more long-term and severe consequences. The aim is to investigate how fathers' alcohol use is related to the risk for substance-related disorders in offspring. METHOD: A prospective cohort study of 64 710 Swedish citizens whose fathers were conscripted for compulsory military training at ages 18-20 in 1969/70. Information on fathers' alcohol consumption, frequency of intoxication and apprehended for drunkenness, was collected

A Validation Study of the Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders Behavioral Checklist.

BACKGROUND: The initial confirmatory factor analysis of the Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder Behavioral Checklist (ABC) utilized a population of 203 children. The analysis identified 10 independent measures (executive functioning, attention and concentration, cognition, memory, confabulation, gullibility, communication skills, academic skills, living/social skills, and juvenile justice). The 10 measures differentiated children with FASD from non-FASD controls. In this study, we present a validity study of the ABC using a different population of children with FASD and non-FASD contro
