Algal protein-based 3D-printed fish-analogs as a new approach for sustainable seafood.

Rising global demand for animal-products exceeds human-population growth. This unsustainable trend causes harmful ecological effects. Overfishing causes extinction of aquatic animals and a dangerous biodiversity loss harming aquatic ecosystems. Hence, replacing animal-based food, particularly beef and fish, with sustainable alternatives is an urgent vital global mission. Analogs of animal-based products include plant-based, tissue-culture-based and fermentation-based products. Fish analogs have mainly been based on plant-protein, fungi, tissue-culture, but to our knowledge, fish analogs made o

Evaluation of various solvent systems for lipid extraction from wet microalgal biomass and its effects on primary metabolites of lipid-extracted biomass.

Microalgae have tremendous potential to grow rapidly, synthesize, and accumulate lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. The effects of solvent extraction of lipids on other metabolites such as proteins and carbohydrates in lipid-extracted algal (LEA) biomass are crucial aspects of algal biorefinery approach. An effective and economically feasible algae-based oil industry will depend on the selection of suitable solvent/s for lipid extraction, which has minimal effect on metabolites in lipid-extracted algae. In current study, six solvent systems were employed to extract lipids from dry and wet bi

Red Seaweed-Derived Phycobiliproteins: Marine Bioactive Colorants with Functional Health Properties.

Color is a critical sensory attribute of foods that strongly influences consumer perception, acceptance, and purchasing decisions. As health-oriented consumption increases, natural pigments are progressively replacing synthetic colorants. Red algal phycobiliproteins (PBPs) have gained attention in related industries for their vivid water-soluble colors and potential health-promoting properties. Phycoerythrin (PE), phycocyanin (PC), and allophycocyanin (APC) are key pigment proteins responsible for their characteristic coloration. However, variations in algal species, season, and cultivation en

Development of biological macroalgae lignins using copper based metal-organic framework for selective adsorption of cationic dye from mixed dyes.

The chemical compositions of macroalgae are protein; cholesterol, fatty acid, and lignin which mostly construct from hydroxyl and amine groups. The lignin as a key structure in the tissues of macroalgae was modified using the sulfation pathway. A novel environmental friendly adsorbent Cu-BTC@Algal was synthesized by incorporated Cu-BTC nanoparticles onto sulphated-Macroalgae biomass under solvothermal conditions and characterized by XRD, FTIR, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The removal rate of Cu-BTC@Algal was quite greater than that of Cu-BTC, showing that the adsorption performance

Nitrogen recycling from fuel-extracted algal biomass: residuals as the sole nitrogen source for culturing Scenedesmus acutus.

In this study, the reuse of nitrogen from fuel-extracted algal residues was investigated. The alga Scenedesmus acutus was found to be able to assimilate nitrogen contained in amino acids, yeast extracts, and proteinaceous alga residuals. Moreover, these alternative nitrogen resources could replace nitrate in culturing media. The ability of S. acutus to utilize the nitrogen remaining in processed algal biomass was unique among the promising biofuel strains tested. This alga was leveraged in a recycling approach where nitrogen is recovered from algal biomass residuals that remain after lipids ar

Diversity and evolution of nitric oxide synthases (NOS) genes in photosynthetic eukaryotes: New insights from Klebsormidiophyceae (Charophytes).

Although nitric oxide synthase (NOS) proteins homologous to mammalian NOS are absent in terrestrial plants (embryophytes), they are present in various algal groups. Of the 367 algal species for which genome data is available on the NCBI database, 40 proteins belonging to 36 species in various algal classes have been identified. The sporadic distribution of NOS orthologues across the algae phylogenetic tree raises the question of why this enzyme is absent in most species. Genome and recent transcriptome sequencing in Klebsormidiophyceae provided an opportunity to study the evolution of NOS sequ

Mechanisms of algal biomass input enhanced microbial Hg methylation in lake sediments.

Eutrophication is a major environmental concern in lake systems, impacting the ecological risks of contaminants and drinking water safety. It has long been believed that eutrophication and thus algal blooms would reduce methylmercury (MeHg) levels in water, as well as MeHg bioaccumulation and trophic transfer (e.g., by growth dilution). In this study, however, we demonstrated that algae settlement and decomposition after algal blooms increased MeHg levels in sediments (54-514% higher), as evidenced by the results from sediments in 10 major lakes in China. These could in turn raise concerns abo

Mechanism of inhibitory action of the local anaesthetic trimecaine on the growth of algae (Chlorella vulgaris).

Using the model compound trimecaine, it was found that algicidal effects exhibited by the local anaesthetics of the acetanilide type were caused by two different mechanisms. The first inhibitory mechanism occurring at low concentrations of the anaesthetic is connected with the uncoupling of the photophosphorylations in algal chloroplasts and is accompanied by the enhancement of the oxygen evolving rate in algal photosynthesis. The second mechanism of inhibition of the photosynthesis in algae, taking place at higher concentrations of the anaesthetic, is connected with the damaging of the mangan

Using a tubular photosynthetic microbial fuel cell to treat anaerobically digested effluent from kitchen waste: Mechanisms of organics and ammonium removal.

Anaerobically digested effluent from kitchen waste (ADE-KW) was used herein as the substrate of a tubular photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (PMFC) for power production, and also, after being diluted, as a medium for cultivation of algae in the cathodic chamber. Adding 3 mg/L phosphorus to the catholyte could efficiently enhance the algal growth and the PMFC performance. About 0.94 g/L algal biomass and 0.57 kWh/m3-ADE-KW bioelectricity were obtained from the PMFC. Soluble microbial byproduct-like material and aromatic proteins were the dominant organics in the ADE-KW, which were readily degra

Synthesis and assembly of a full-length human monoclonal antibody in algal chloroplasts.

Monoclonal antibodies can be effective therapeutics against a variety of human diseases, but currently marketed antibody-based drugs are very expensive compared to other therapeutic options. Here, we show that the eukaryotic green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is capable of synthesizing and assembling a full-length IgG1 human monoclonal antibody (mAb) in transgenic chloroplasts. This antibody, 83K7C, is derived from a human IgG1 directed against anthrax protective antigen 83 (PA83), and has been shown to block the effects of anthrax toxin in animal models. Here we show that 83K7C heavy and l

Decoding the lactylation landscape: Implications for tumor microenvironment remodeling and marine algal saccharide-based therapeutic interventions.

BACKGROUND: Lactylation is the reversible post-translational modification where lactyl groups-metabolic products of lactic acid-covalently bind to lysine residues on proteins. This process is precisely regulated by "writing" enzymes and "erasing" enzymes. Lactylation directly uses lactate, linking the Warburg effect in tumor metabolism to epigenetic regulation. This mechanism remodels the tumor microenvironment by influencing gene expression, immune response, metabolic reprogramming, and tumor resistance. PURPOSE: This review comprehensively examines lactylation's role in tumor progression, i

Algal Autophagy Is Necessary for the Regulation of Carbon Metabolism Under Nutrient Deficiency.

Autophagy is a mechanism to recycle intracellular constituents such as amino acids and other carbon- and nitrogen (N)-containing compounds. Although autophagy-related (ATG) genes required for autophagy are encoded by many algal genomes, their functional importance in microalgae in nutrient-deficiency has not been appraised using ATG-defective mutants. Recently, by characterization of an insertional mutant of the ATG8 encoding a ubiquitin-like protein indispensable for autophagosome formation in a green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, we have provided evidence that supports the following notion
