BACKGROUND: All fibrous wound dressings are considered to have the same action and value to the support of wound healing. Although clear distinction has been accepted between cotton gauze and calcium alginates, there is still no formally recognised distinction between calcium alginates and the more rapidly gelling fibre dressings.
METHOD: Scientific and clinical evaluations were used to differentiate two different fibrous wound care products. One is derived from polymer extraction of algae (alginate dressings); the other has been manufactured from a uniquely patented carboxymethylation proces

BACKGROUND: Currently, a wide variety of bio-occlusive dressing materials are available. In general, these dressing materials provide a moist wound healing environment that has been shown to promote healing in both human and animal studies. To effectively use these dressings the clinician must have a full understanding of the properties of the materials as well as the pathophysiology of the particular wound. Most recently, a "new" biosynthetic dressing material, the alginates, has become available.
OBJECTIVE: To highlight proper use of alginate dressings for the management of acute and chroni

A layer-by-layer approach is used for the preparation of multilayer films on the basis of biomacromolecules and their aggregates, protein fibrils. In this work, the fibrils were prepared from β-lactoglobulin and oat globulin, while sodium and calcium alginates were used as oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. Mixed layers of fibrils with alginate salts were formed at the air/liquid interface by the sequential replacement of solutions in the sublayer. The use of alginate salts resulted in a high stiffness of the mixed layers, allowing their transfer to a solid substrate without disturbing their

OBJECTIVE: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) are chronic conditions caused by backflow of gastric and duodenal contents into the esophagus and proximal aerodigestive tract, respectively. Mucosal barrier dysfunction resultant from the synergistic actions of chemical injury and the mucosal inflammatory response during reflux contributes to symptom perception. Alginates effectively treat symptoms of mild to moderate GERD and have recently shown benefit for LPR. In addition to forming a "raft" over gastric contents to reduce acidic reflux episodes, alginates

A strategy to light-trigger ionic cross-linking of alginates by incorporating a photosensitive Ca2+ cage (nitr-T) is presented. Upon irradiation, free Ca2+ was released, and this caused gelation of the alginate solution. Addition of Ca2+ "on-demand" allowed us to obtain homogeneous alginate (ALG) gels using concentrated initial ALG solutions (10%), not possible with other ionic gelation approaches. The cross-linking degree and derived mechanical properties of the hydrogel were modulated by the exposure dose. The light-mediated cross-linked alginate hydrogel displayed a significant improvement

PURPOSE: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a medical condition in which gastric contents reflux, directly or indirectly, causing morphological and neurological alterations in the upper aerodigestive system. Alginates are a common solution to this problem.
METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review of the MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials, and Scopus databases without temporal limitations. Our goal was to gather all available data published in English on the use of alginates in patients with LPR.
RESULTS: A total of 134 articles were screene

Alginates are anionic unbranched plant and bacterial polysaccharides composed of mannuronic and guluronic acid residues. Alginates can form hydrogels under mild conditions in the presence of divalent cations (e.g., Ca2+). Because of their capacity to form gels, high biocompatibility, and relatively low cost, these polysaccharides are employed in pharmaceutical industry, medicine, food industry, cosmetology, and agriculture. Alginate oligomers produced by enzymatic cleavage of high-molecular-weight algal alginates are used as medicinal agents and dietary supplements. The global market for algin

Colonization of the lungs by biofilm-forming pathogens is a major cause of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). In CF patients, these pathogens are difficult to treat due to the additional protection provided by both the biofilm exopolysaccharide matrix and thick, viscous mucus. The antibiofilm efficacy of nitric oxide (NO)-releasing alginates was evaluated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia cepacia, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant S. aureus biofilms in both aerobic and anaerobic environments. Varying the amine precursor grafted onto alginate oligosaccharides imparted

We conducted a crossover study, in which the efficacy and the onset of action of a single dose of Gaviscon (suspension) and Gaviscon forte (suspension) in 52 patients with heartburn of moderate intensity and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have been investigated. The average age of the patients was 44.0 +/- 17.3-years-old. The patients have undergone clinical evaluation of intensity of GERD symptoms and psychological assessment (questionnaires SF-36, SMOL, LOBI). Alginates' effects and qualities were evaluated using stopwatch technique, clinical examination, and organoleptic assessment.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease, have significant impact on quality of life and health care costs. Antacids, alginates, and diet modifications are non-prescription interventions that can help to manage these conditions with limited risk of side-effects. Alginates have emerged as a unique mechanism of treatment to block reflux episodes. When combined with dietary interventions that target reflux triggers, alginates demonstrate enhanced efficacy in managing symptoms and promoting mucosal healing. This article explores the role of antacids, alginates, and diet in refl

Long-standing gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) can give rise to Barrett's oesophagus (BM), a metaplastic condition and precursor to oesophageal adenocarcinoma (AC). Oesophageal cancer was once rare but is now the 5th biggest cancer killer in the U.K. Reflux of bile acids into the oesophagus is implicated in the progression to BM as bile acids at pH 4 have been shown to induce c-myc expression, an oncogene upregulated in BM and AC. In the present study we investigated the role of the biopolymer alginate on bile acid induced molecular changes in oesophageal cell lines. OE21, OE33 and TE-

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown, ex vivo, that alginate solutions can have a topical protective effect on oesophageal mucosal biopsies exposed to simulated gastric juice. Oesophageal mucosal impedance can measure the duration of mucosal adherence of ionic solutions since the impedance drops when the solution is present, and rises to baseline as the solution clears.
AIM: To investigate the in vivo duration of adhesion of swallowed alginate solution to distal oesophageal mucosa.
METHODS: We studied 20 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with heartburn. A pH-impedance catheter was inserted,

Xanthates are widely used in mining industry as collectors for its high affinity towards metal sulfides and precious metal ores. The possibility of using alginate for xanthation has not been explored yet despite the feasibility by the presence of hydroxyl groups alongside the polymeric chains. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the alginate as a matrix for xanthation and its application on heavy metal ions removal. In order to obtain green materials, important pararmeter were explored such as the effect of reaction time (4-12 h), type of base (NaOH/KOH) and amount of carbon disulfide (2-10%

Alginic acid and its sodium salt are well-accepted pharmaceutical excipients fulfilling several roles in the development of solid oral dosage forms. Although they have attractive advantages as safety, abundance, relatively low cost and biodegradability, these natural polysaccharides possess a high variability that may limit their use as excipients for tablet formulation. Thus, to obtain robust formulations and high-quality drug products with consistent performance a complete understanding of the structure-property relationship becomes necessary as the structure of alginates affects both, techn

BACKGROUND: Alginate is one of the main extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in biofilms of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients suffering from pulmonary infections. Gentamicin sulfate (GS) can strongly bind to alginate resulting in loss of pharmacological activity; however neither the mechanism nor its repercussion is fully understood. In this study, we investigated how GS modifies the alginate macromolecular network and its microenvironment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Alginate gels of two different compositions (either enriched in guluronate units (G) or enriched in mannuronate units (M)) were cros

Introduction: Developing a culture system that can effectively maintain chondrocyte phenotype and functionalization is a promising strategy for cartilage repair. Methods: An alginate/collagen (ALG/COL) hybrid hydrogel using different guluronate/mannuronate acid ratio (G/M ratio) of alginates (a G/M ratio of 64/36 and a G/M ratio of 34/66) with collagen was developed. The effects of G/M ratios on the properties of hydrogels and their effects on the chondrocytes behaviors were evaluated. Results: The results showed that the mechanical stiffness of the hydrogel was significantly affected by the G
