The genome sequence of Triglochin palustris L., 1753 (Alismatales: Juncaginaceae).

We present a genome assembly of Triglochin palustris (Marsh Arrowgrass; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Alismatales; Juncaginaceae). The genome sequence has a total length of 437.49 megabases. Most of the assembly (99.65%) is scaffolded into 12 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial sequences have lengths of 220.68 and 132.08 kilobases and the plastid genome assembly has a length of 155.83 kilobases. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces reference genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ireland.

From mechanical to chemical impact of anchoring in seagrasses: The premises of anthropogenic patch generation in Posidonia oceanica meadows.

Intensive anchoring of leisure boats in seagrass meadows leads to mechanical damages. This anthropogenic impact creates bare mat patches that are not easily recolonized by the plant. Several tools are used to study human impacts on the structure of seagrass meadows but they are not able to assess the indirect and long term implication of mechanical destruction. We chose to investigate the possible changes in the substrate chemistry given contrasted boat impacts. Our observations show that hydrogen sulfide concentrations remain high at 15 and 20m depth (42.6μM and 18.8μM) several months after t

Modularity limits the spatial propagation of disturbance in experimental seagrass networks.

Understanding how habitat structure affects disturbance dynamics among connected patches is a central issue in ecology. Network theory predicts that a modular arrangement of habitat patches can limit the spread of local perturbations, reducing the probability of large-scale impacts. We performed a field experiment to test whether modular networks were more resistant to the spread of algal turfs compared to random networks within meadows of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile. Networks were created by manipulating the canopy of P. oceanica to promote the vegetative propagation of algal

Antagonistic effects of epibiota on chronic experimental Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) exposure in Cymodocea nodosa.

Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) is an emerging anthropogenic stressor in coastal ecosystems, particularly in urbanised areas. ALAN can disrupt the natural diel cycles of light-sensitive foundation species, such as seagrasses, altering key physiological processes. Although ALAN can affect marine primary producers, its effects on seagrasses under realistic field conditions and in interaction with other stressors remain poorly understood. In urbanised coastal systems ALAN frequently co-occurs alongside nutrient enrichment and consequent epibiotic accumulation, which could mediate seagrass respon

Tidal air exposure thresholds in seagrass survival: photodamage-antioxidant imbalance and anthocyanin accumulation associated with Enhalus acoroides zonation limits.

Seagrass meadows are ecologically vital yet increasingly threatened marine ecosystems. Identifying the mechanisms that determine their spatial distribution, particularly in shallow coastal zones, is essential for effective conservation and management. In this study, we investigate the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying seagrass zonation in Enhalus acoroides using field surveys, controlled experiments, and multi-omics analyses. Our findings demonstrate that seagrass distribution is constrained to areas experiencing ≤4 h of daily air exposure, beyond which plant viability sharply

Evaluating the extent and impact of the extreme Storm Gloria on Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows.

Extreme storms can trigger abrupt and often lasting changes in ecosystems by affecting foundational (habitat-forming) species. While the frequency and intensity of extreme events are projected to increase under climate change, its impacts on seagrass ecosystems remain poorly documented. In January 2020, the Spanish Mediterranean coast was hit by Storm Gloria, one of the most devastating recent climate events in terms of intensity and duration. We conducted rapid surveys of 42 Posidonia oceanica meadows across the region to evaluate the extent and type of impact (burial, unburial and uprooting)

Nutrition of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa: Pulses of ammonium but not of phosphate are crucial to sustain the species growth.

We investigated the nutrient acquisition of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa and the importance of sediment to water column nutrient pulses, which regularly occur in coastal lagoons forced by incoming flood tides. Ammonium was preferentially taken up and accounted for 60-90% of the total daily N acquisition, whereas amino acid acquisition through belowground plant parts represented the second most important source of N, accounting 8-34%. The uptake of ammonium pulses increased dramatically the daily N acquisition from 9.5 mmol m-2 day-1 to 1.33 mmol m-2 day-1 at ambient nutrient concentrations, e

A Comparison of Methods for Assessing the Antioxidant Expression in Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile.

Non-enzymatic antioxidants, such as polyphenols, can counteract free radicals and other potentially toxic oxidants produced by marine plants exposed to stress. In this study, we assessed different methods for measuring antioxidant capacities and condensed tannins in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile. Two polyphenol extraction methods, direct and sequential, were compared to determine their efficiencies. Condensed tannins were assayed directly on leaf flour using a modified HCl-butanol-acetone-iron reagent method. Total antioxidant capacities were assayed with the ABTS, CUPRAC, and OR

The relevant effect of marine salt and epiphytes on Posidonia oceanica waste pyrolysis: Removal of SO2/HCl emissions and promotion of O/HCOOH formation.

Significant quantities of Posidonia oceanica deposit on some beaches and coastlines every year, which generates high costs associated with the disposal of this waste. Pyrolysis may be an adequate way for its valorization. However, it would imply to know how the process takes place and if the removal of its natural detrital inorganic matter (epiphytes, marine salt and sand) is necessary, which are the objectives of this research. Pyrolysis by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry was carried out on both the washed and unwashed samples. During this waste pyrolysis, the following occurs: (i) the hig

Physiological and biochemical indicators of Posidonia oceanica transplantation success.

Evaluating the success of Posidonia oceanica transplantation is challenging due to the species' slow growth and delayed structural responses. This three-year study in Calvi Bay (Corsica) examined how transplantation method (iron staples, coconut fiber mats, BESE elements), donor source (donor meadow vs. storm-fragments), transplantation depth (20 m vs. 28 m) and time post transplantation influence the physiological and biochemical parameters of transplanted cuttings. Plant responses were assessed through photosynthetic activity, leaf elemental concentrations (C, N, P, S), and rhizome carbohydr

Marine heatwaves and eutrophication jeopardize the seagrass Halodule wrightii and associated infauna.

Coastal ecosystems such as seagrass meadows endure challenges imposed by marine heatwaves (MHWs) and eutrophication. Although the isolated impacts of these stressors are well documented, their combined effects are yet to be better understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a mesocosm experiment evaluating the combined effects of stress caused by a MHW and exposure to effluent from a ruptured sewage pond -used as a proxy for eutrophication- on the seagrass Halodule wrightii and its associated infauna. Our results showed that H. wrightii and its infauna tolerated the conditions of the

Machine learning unveils large-scale impact of Posidonia oceanica on Mediterranean Sea water.

Posidonia oceanica is a protected endemic seagrass of the Mediterranean Sea that fosters biodiversity, stores carbon, releases oxygen, and provides habitat to numerous sea organisms. Leveraging augmented research, we collected a comprehensive dataset of 174 features compiled from diverse data sources. Through machine learning analysis, we discovered the existence of a robust correlation between the location of P. oceanica and water biogeochemical properties. The model's feature importance showed that carbon-related variables such as net biomass production and carbon dioxide flux have their val

Comparative assessment of transplantation methods and donor sources for the restoration of Posidonia oceanica meadows.

The restoration of coastal ecosystems, especially seagrass meadows, has become a key priority to support the recovery of ecosystem services. In the Mediterranean Basin, although many projects have been carried out to restore Posidonia oceanica meadows over the past 50 years, major knowledge gaps persist. This study is the first to simultaneously compare two donor sources, storm fragments versus donor meadow cuttings, and three sustainable transplantation methods. This three-year experiment involved transplanting 693 cuttings using three distinct transplantation methods (iron staples, coconut f

Seagrass importance for a small-scale fishery in the tropics: the need for seascape management.

Small-scale fisheries (SSF) in tropical seascapes (mosaics of interconnected mangroves, seagrasses and corals) are crucial for food and income. However, management is directed mostly to corals and mangroves. This research analyzes the importance of seagrasses compared to adjacent ecosystems in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Using fish landings; the study investigated: location of fishing effort, fish production (biomass and species), and monetary benefits (aggregated value and per capita income). Seagrasses were the most visited grounds providing highest community benefits. Per capita benefit

Physiological responses of Zostera marina and Cymodocea nodosa to light-limitation stress.

The effects of light-limitation stress were investigated in natural stands of the seagrasses Zostera marina and Cymodocea nodosa in Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, southern Portugal. Three levels of light attenuation were imposed for 3 weeks in two adjacent meadows (2-3 m depth), each dominated by one species. The response of photosynthesis to light was determined with oxygen electrodes. Chlorophylls and carotenoids were determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Soluble protein, carbohydrates, malondialdehyde and phenol contents were also analysed. Both species showed evident signs

A bottom-up approach to model water quality changes along the Apulia region coastline: a Bayesian Network application to seagrass meadows under a changing climate.

Water quality (WQ) deterioration in marine-coastal areas (MCA) is among the main threats affecting socio-economic systems and ecosystem functioning, calling for urgent actions to preserve ecosystems' resilience. Nature-based Solutions (NBS) improve ecosystem resilience and biodiversity, transforming nature management while providing environmental and societal benefits. Yet, little is known on NBS capacity in reducing WQ deterioration. Understanding this nexus requires establishing functional relationships between marine ecosystems status and climatic and human pressures. The relationship betwe

Seagrass conservation in a dynamic tidal creek system: Balancing creek stability and nutrient loads for sustainable management.

Conservation and restoration of seagrass habitats in the coastal blue carbon ecosystem is gaining attention worldwide due to its carbon dioxide sequestration ability. The present study investigates the impact of various environmental stressors on the growth of tropical seagrasses, specifically Halophila Ovalis and Halodule Uninervis, across different phases of geomorphological transformation in a tidal creek along the meso-tidal western Bay of Bengal. Evaluating seagrass growth pattern under various scenarios such as open creek (OC), close creek at the initial phase and final phase (CCI & CCF)

Global seagrass carbon stock variability and emissions from seagrass loss.

Seagrass ecosystems are recognized for their capacity to sequester and store organic carbon, but there is large variability in soil organic carbon stocks associated with plant traits and environmental conditions, making the quantification and scaling of carbon storage and fluxes needed to contribute to climate change mitigation highly challenging. Here, we provide estimates of carbon stocks associated with seagrass systems (biomass and soil) through analyses of a comprehensive global database including 2700+ seagrass soil cores. The median global soil Corg stock estimate is 24.2 (12.4 - 44.9)

Recovery from the impact of light reduction on the seagrass Amphibolis griffithii, insights for dredging management.

A large-scale, manipulative experiment was conducted to examine the extent and rate of recovery of meadows of the temperate Australian seagrass, Amphibolis griffithii to different light-reduction scenarios typical of dredging operations, and to identify potential indicators of recovery from light reduction stress. Shade cloth was used to mimic different intensities, durations and start times of light reduction, and then was removed to assess the recovery. The meadow could recover from 3 months of light stress (5-18% ambient) following 10 months re-exposure to ambient light, even when up to 72%
