An in situ method for the generation of hydroxyl-(arene- and alkanesulfonyl)-iodobenzenes [PhI-(OH)-(OSO2R)] from phenyliodine diacetate (PIDA) and arene- or alkanesulfonic acids is described. The resulting iodine-(III) sulfonate species functioned as effective oxidants for two distinct transformations. Under these conditions, selective para-sulfonyloxylation of anisole derivatives was achieved without requiring ortho-substitution by electron-withdrawing groups. The same reagent system was also applicable to heteroaromatic substrates, enabling temperature-controlled sulfonyloxylation of naphth

Triazenyl-substituted pyrimethamine derivatives 10a-s have been prepared by coupling diazotized 2,4-diamino-5-(3-amino-4-chlorophenyl)-6-ethyl pyrimidine (1c) with a series of secondary amines in aqueous sodium carbonate solution. The triazenes which are stable and poorly soluble as free bases form more soluble, but unstable, salts with alkanesulfonic acids. The lead dimethyltriazene 2,4-diamino-5[4-chloro-3-(3,3-dimethyltriazen-1-yl)phenyl]-6-et hylpyrimidine (4a) forms a crystalline ethanesulfonic acid salt (solvated with 2-propanol), which is protonated at the pyrimidine N-1 position, as de

A novel molecular design based on a quinazolinone scaffold was developed via the attachment of aryl alkanesulfonates to the quinazolinone core through a thioacetohydrazide azomethine linker, leading to a new series of quinazolinone-alkanesulfonates 5a-r. The antimicrobial properties of the newly synthesized quinazolinone derivatives 5a-r were investigated to examine their bactericidal and fungicidal activities against bacterial pathogens like Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Sallmonella Typhimurium (Gram-negative), in addit

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic organofluorine compounds known for their chemical and physical stability as well as their wide range of uses. Some PFAS are widely distributed in the environment, leading to concerns related to both environmental and human health. High temperature thermal treatment (i.e., incineration) has been utilized for PFAS treatment, but this requires significant infrastructure and energy, prompting interest in lower temperature approaches that may still lead to efficient destruction. Lower treatment temperatures, however, increase the potential fo

This review outlines information about the Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium Variovorax paradoxus. The genomes of these species have G+C contents of 66.5-69.4 mol%, and the cells form yellow colonies. Some strains of V. paradoxus are facultative lithoautotrophic, others are chemoorganotrophic. Many of them are associated with important catabolic processes including the degradation of toxic and/or complex chemical compounds. The degradation pathways or other skills related to the following compounds, respectively, are described in this review: sulfolane, 3-sulfolene, 2-mercaptosuccinic acid, 3,3

The perfluoalkyl substance (PFASs) perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been widely used in industry. However, PFOS is a persistent organic pollutant and has been gradually replaced by its short-chain analogs, perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). PFASs are extremely persistent and are very frequently detected among the general population. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected PFASs on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and the mechanisms of their action. PBMCs were exposed to PFOS, PFBS and PFHxS at concentrations ranging from 0

Whether perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) are responding to legislative restrictions and showing decreasing trends in top marine predators that range across the eastern North Pacific Ocean is unclear. Here, we examined longer-term temporal trends (1973-2019) of 4 PFSAs and 13 PFCAs, as well stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N, in the eggs of 4 seabird species sampled along a nearshore-offshore gradient; double-crested cormorants (Nannopterum auritum), pelagic cormorants (Urile pelagicus), rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata), and Leach's storm-petrels

Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and PFHxS-related compounds are listed in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention without specific exemptions. Substances that potentially degrade to PFHxS are considered as their related compounds. Unfortunately, the degradation behavior of PFHxS precursors, an important basis for the corresponding chemical regulation, remains unclear. Herein, based on the hypothesis that bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) is the determining factor for the degradation of PFHxS precursors, the BDE of PFHxS-related precursors to produceC6F13SO2-groups was calculated. In addition,

High exposure of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been reported in main chemical production areas in China, while epidemiological study on exposure risk of PFAS is still limited. In this study, legacy and alternative PFAS were measured in serum samples from 161 adults living in Laizhou Bay, a famous chemical production area located in Shandong province, Northern China. Based on the concentrations of serum PFAS, the disrupting effects of PFAS on serum lipids and thyroid function were further explored. The results showed that the serum perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (geometric mean

Per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitous in the environment and have been proved to be immunotoxic to humans. However, it remains unclear whether exposure to PFASs affects the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, nine PFASs were determined in human serum collected from 280 health populations and 294 RA patients in a cohort enrolled between 2018 and 2020 in Hangzhou, China, and were examined their correlations with immune marker levels. Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) were

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses the leading threats to human health and life, and their occurrence and severity are associated with exposure to environmental pollutants. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of widely used industrial chemicals, are characterized by persistence, long-distance migration, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. Some PFAS, particularly perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), have been banned, leaving only legacy exposure to the environment and human body, while a number of novel PFAS alt

Seven-day sublethal toxicity tests were performed with the freshwater invertebrates Ceriodaphnia dubia, Hyalella azteca, and Chironomus dilutus to determine the effects of per- or polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) of varying chain length within four classes: perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), perfluoroalkane sulfonamides, and fluorotelomer sulfonic acids. In general, toxicity increased with increasing chain length, but the slopes of these relationships varied markedly by species and chemical class. The toxicity of individual PFCAs was similar

Suppressing the growth of unwanted microorganisms that potentially compete with chain elongation (CE) cultures is essential for enhanced medium chain carboxylic acid (MCCA) production. This study examines the effects of 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES) supplementation in a defined media containing ethanol and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and complex media containing green waste on CE performance. Two types of inoculums were employed: an anaerobic digestate (AD) derived from manure fiber and a mixed chain-elongating (MC) culture dominated with Clostridium sensu stricto 12. Results show that ethanol

Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is a widely detected replacement for legacy long-chain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment and human blood samples. Its potential toxicity led to its recent classification as a globally regulated persistent organic pollutant. Although animal studies have shown a positive association between PFHxS levels and hepatic steatosis and hepatocellular hypertrophy, the link with liver toxicity, including end-stage liver cancer, remains inconclusive. In this study, we examined the effects of PFHxS on the proliferation of Hep3B (human hepatocellular carci

This work assessed the adsorption performance of three common PFAS compounds (PFOA, PFOS and PFHxS) on two water treatment sludges (WTS) and two biochars (commercial biomass biochar and semi-pilot scale biosolids biochar). Of the two WTS samples included in this study, one was sourced from poly-aluminium chloride (PAC) and the other from alum (Al2(SO4)3). The results of experiments using a single PFAS for adsorption reinforced established trends in affinity - the shorter-chained PFHxS was less adsorbed than PFOS, and the sulphates (PFOS) were more readily adsorbed than the acid (PFOA). Many studies have examined per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in human blood. However, the distribution of PFASs in human blood remains not well known, especially for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) precursors. In this study, human blood samples (n = 162) were collected from general Chinese population, and then the isomer-specific partitioning of PFASs between human plasma and red blood cells (RBCs) were investigated. Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and PFOS were consistently the predominant PFASs in both human plasma and RBCs. In human blood, among C4-C7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are some of the most prominent organic contaminants in human blood. Although the toxicological implications of human exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are well established, data on lesser-understood PFAS are limited. New approach methodologies (NAMs) that apply bioinformatic tools to high-throughput data are being increasingly considered to inform risk assessment for data-poor chemicals. The aim of this study was to compare the potencies (ie, benchmark concentrations: BMCs) of PFAS in primary human liver microt

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a manmade chemical with several industrial applications and also a potential byproduct of many other per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in the environment. Due to the gathered evidence on its environmental persistence, long-range transport, toxicity, and bioaccumulative and biomagnifying properties, PFOS, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), were listed for global restriction under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2009. Nevertheless, Brazil has granted an acceptable purpose exemption for using PFOSF

Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds (PFASs) are a class of synthetic chemical substances that are widely used in human production and life, such as fire-fighting foams, textiles and clothing, surfactants, and surface protective agents. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are the most abundant and common perfluorinated compounds in biota and humans. Currently, PFOA and PFOS have been listed in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, and their production has been halted in many countries.
