Thiophosphonium-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reactions: A Heavy Congener of the Carbonyl-Alkyne Metathesis.

While the metathesis reaction between alkynes and thiocarbonyl compounds has been thoroughly studied, the reactivity of alkynes with isoelectronic main group R2E=S compounds is rarely reported and unknown for [R2P=S]+ analogues. We show that thiophosphonium ions, which are the isoelectronic phosphorus congeners to thiocarbonyl compounds, undergo [2 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions with different alkynes to generate 1,2-thiaphosphete ions. The four-membered ring species are in an equilibrium state with the corresponding P=C-C=S heterodiene structure and thus undergo hetero-Diels-Alder reactions wit

Heteroatom-directed alkylcyanation of alkynes.

Alkanenitriles having a heteroatom such as nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur at the gamma-position are found to add across alkynes stereo- and regioselectively by nickel/Lewis acid catalysis to give highly substituted acrylonitriles. The heteroatom functionalities likely coordinate to the nickel center to make oxidative addition of the C-CN bonds of the alkyl cyanides kinetically favorable, forming a five-membered nickelacycle intermediate and, thus, preventing beta-hydride elimination to allow the alkylcyanation reaction.

1,3-Heterocumulene-to-alkyne.

Transition structures and energy barriers of the concerted prototypical cycloaddition reaction of 1,3-heterocumulenes (S=C=S, S=C=NR, RN=C=NR, and heteroanalogs) to acetylene resulting in nucleophilic carbenes were calculated by G2(MP2) and CBS-Q ab initio quantum chemical and by density functional theory (DFT) methods. According to the calculations the activation energies (activation enthalpies) of the homoheteroatomic cumulenes decrease in the order O > S > Se and NH > PH and the reaction energies in the order O > S approximately Se and PH > NH. The reaction of carbon disulfide and acetylene

Chemoselective synthesis of multi-functionalized alkynes and alkenes via transition-metal-free iodination of terminal alkynes.

A highly efficient method for the terminal iodination of alkynes is developed to access multi-functionalized alkynes containing an iodo and a propargyl ether group under mild reaction conditions using an I2/K2CO3 system in methanol. Reactions enable the synthesis of 1,2-diiodoalkenes containing an allyl ether via diiodination using the I2/KI reagent system in water under ultrasonication. Chemoselectivity has been achieved by a judicious choice of the reaction conditions for synthesizing monoiodination and diiodination products. This diversity-oriented synthesis requires no purification, allowi

Visible-Light-Induced Semihydrogenation of Alkynes.

The semihydrogenation of alkynes is an important and direct synthetic strategy to obtain Z-alkenes. Although great success has been achieved with various transition metal catalysts, a mild and metal-free approach is still highly desired. Herein, we report a metal-free photocatalytic transfer hydrogenation method for the semireduction of alkynes, wherein γ-terpinene acts as the reductant, while both H2O and γ-terpinene serve as hydrogen sources. A range of alkynes can be efficiently converted to Z-alkenes via transfer hydrogenation followed by photoinduced E → Z isomerization. This green and su

Iron-Catalyzed Transfer Hydroalumination of Alkynes.

The limited availability of efficient synthetic methods for organoaluminum compounds constrains their broader applications. The transfer hydroalumination of alkynes emerges as a promising strategy for synthesizing alkenylaluminum species; however, achieving precise control of the selectivity remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we disclose a highly chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective transfer hydroalumination of alkynes, catalyzed by well-defined iron complexes, utilizing commercially available AlEt3 as the hydroalumination reagent. The regioselectivity of the transfer hydroalumination reac

Iron-catalysed hydroalumination of internal alkynes.

Although research on iron-catalysed reactions has recently achieved significant progress, the activity and selectivity of iron catalysts are generally inferior to those of noble-metal catalysts. The development of new iron-catalysed reactions, especially those in which iron catalysts exhibit superior activity or selectivity to other catalysts, is the key to promote iron catalysis. Herein, we report the first protocol for iron-catalysed hydroalumination of internal alkynes. Specifically, in the presence of iron catalysts bearing 2,9-diaryl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands, internal alkynes were ster

Diastereodivergent Reductive Cross Coupling of Alkynes through Tandem Catalysis: Z- and E-Selective Hydroarylation of Terminal Alkynes.

A diastereodivergent hydroarylation of terminal alkynes is accomplished using tandem catalysis. The hydroarylation allows highly selective synthesis of both E and Z diastereoisomers of aryl alkenes, from the same set of starting materials, using the same combination of palladium and copper catalysts. The selectivity is controlled by simple changes in the stoichiometry of the alcohol additive. The hydroarylation has excellent substrate scope and can be accomplished in the presence of various classes of compounds, including esters, nitriles, alkyl halides, epoxides, carbamates, acetals, ethers,

Unexpected Reactions of Terminal Alkynes in Targeted "Click Chemistry'' Coppercatalyzed Azide-alkyne Cycloadditions.

BACKGROUND: High efficiency in terms of reaction yield and purity has led to the extensive utilization of copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) in various fields of chemistry. Its compatibility with low molecular weight alcohols promotes the application in surfactant synthesis to tackle the miscibility constraints of the reactants. OBJECTIVE: For the tuning of surfactant properties, double click coupling of the antipode precursors was attempted. Failure of the CuAAC to provide the targeted product in combination with unexpected reaction outputs led to an investigation of the sid

Regioselective and Stereospecific Hydrostannation on Terminal Alkynes.

We report a ruthenium-catalyzed regioselective and stereospecific hydrostannation of terminal alkynes in a switchable solvent system under ambient conditions. This method exhibits excellent selectivity and functional group tolerance, enabling controlled Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov addition of tributyl tin hydride to the C(sp)-C(sp) bond. The stereospecific formation of (E)-β-vinylstannane from (Z)-β-vinylstannane by isomerization at high temperatures was verified through a detailed NMR study. We also demonstrated the utility of this method by synthesizing an organotin-containing boronic e

Aluminium redox catalysis enables cyclotrimerization of alkynes.

Aluminium comprises over 8% of Earth's crust and is the most abundant metallic constituent1. Historically, aluminium catalysis has predominantly exploited the inherent Lewis acidity associated with its stable +III oxidation state2. Owing to its uniquely low electronegativity (1.61)-the lowest among p-block elements-and the absence of an inert-pair effect, aluminium presents formidable intrinsic challenges for engaging in catalytic redox transformations. Here we report the redox catalytic capability of a low-valent aluminium species, carbazolylaluminylene3, which carries out a complete Al(I)/Al

Gold-catalyzed four-component multifunctionalization of alkynes.

The alkyne unit is a versatile building block in organic synthesis and the development of selective multifunctionalization of alkynes is an important object of research in this field. Herein, we report an interesting gold-catalyzed, four-component reaction that achieves the oxo-arylfluorination or oxo-arylalkenylation of internal aromatic or aliphatic alkynes, efficiently breaking a carbon-carbon triple bond and forming four new chemical bonds. The reaction divergence can be controlled by site-directing functional groups in the alkynes; the presence of a phosphonate unit favors the oxo-arylflu

Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Carbonylative Multifunctionalization of Alkynes.

Currently, the construction of new carbon-carbon bonds and value-added structures in an atom- and step economical manner has become a continuous pursuit in the synthetic chemistry community. Since the first transition-metal-catalyzed hydroformylation of ethylene was reported by Otto Roelen in the 1930s, impressive progress has been achieved in the carbonylative functionalization of unsaturated C-C bonds. In contrast to alkenes, the carbonylative functionalization of alkynes offers tremendous potential for the construction of multisubstituted carbonyl-containing derivatives because of their two

Regioselective trans-Hydrostannation of Boron-Capped Alkynes.

Alkynyl-B(aam) (aam=anthranilamidato) derivatives are readily available bench-stable compounds that undergo remarkably selective reactions with Bu3 SnH in the presence of [Cp*RuCl]4 as the catalyst. The addition follows a stereochemically unorthodox trans-selective course; in terms of regioselectivity, the Bu3 Sn- unit is delivered with high fidelity to the C-atom of the triple bond adjacent to the boracyclic head group ("alpha,trans-addition"). This outcome is deemed to reflect a hydrogen bonding interaction between the protic -NH groups of the benzo-1,3,2-diazaborininone ring system and the

Copper-catalysed selective hydroamination reactions of alkynes.

The development of selective reactions that utilize easily available and abundant precursors for the efficient synthesis of amines is a long-standing goal of chemical research. Despite the centrality of amines in a number of important research areas, including medicinal chemistry, total synthesis and materials science, a general, selective and step-efficient synthesis of amines is still needed. Here, we describe a set of mild catalytic conditions utilizing a single copper-based catalyst that enables the direct preparation of three distinct and important amine classes (enamines, α-chiral branch

Formation of alkyne-bridged ferrocenophanes using ring-closing alkyne metathesis on 1,1'-diacetylenic ferrocenes.

Novel alkyne-bridged ferrocenophanes [fc{CO2(CH2) n C≡}2] (2a: n = 2; 2b: n = 3) were synthesized from the corresponding terminal diacetylenic ferrocenes [fc{CO2(CH2) n C≡CH}2] (1a: n = 2; 1b: n = 3) through ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) utilizing the highly effective molybdenum catalyst [MesC≡Mo{OC(CF3)2CH3}3] (MoF6; Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl). The metathesis reaction occurs in short time with high yields whilst giving full conversion of the terminal alkynes. Furthermore, the solvent-dependant reactivity of 2a towards Ag(SbF6) is investigated, leading to oxidation and formation of t

Iron-Catalyzed trans-Hydrostannation of Terminal Alkynes.

The readily accessible iron complex [Cp*FeCl(tmeda)] is an effective catalyst for the highly regio- and stereoselective trans-hydrostannylation of terminal alkyl alkynes, affording a type of alkenylstannanes that is difficult to make otherwise. The R3Sn- moiety is faithfully delivered to the terminal C-atom, unless a propargylic or homo-propargylic ─OH or ─NH2 group is present in the substrate, which (partly or fully) inverts the regiochemical course; this steering effect, however, can be switched off upon protection of the protic site. The trans-addition likely starts by insertion of the [Cp*

Copper-Catalyzed Enantioselective Hydrophosphorylation of Unactivated Alkynes.

P-stereogenic phosphorus compounds are essential across various fields, yet their synthesis via enantioselective P-C bond formation remains both challenging and underdeveloped. We report the first copper-catalyzed enantioselective hydrophosphorylation of alkynes, facilitated by a newly designed chiral 1,2-diamine ligand. Unlike previous methods that rely on kinetic resolution with less than 50 % conversion, our approach employs a distinct dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation mechanism, achieving complete conversion of racemic starting materials. This reaction is compatible with a broad ra

Palladium-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of alkynes to succinimides.

Succinimide derivatives are useful building blocks for the synthesis of natural products and drugs. We describe an efficient route to succinimide derivatives comprising Pd(xantphos)Cl2-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of alkynes with aromatic or aliphatic amines in the presence of p-TsOH. The utility of this route is demonstrated with the synthesis of a large number of succinimide compounds including an important photochromic molecule.
