An allelopathy based model for the Listeria overgrowth phenomenon.

In a standard procedure of food safety testing, the presence of the pathogenic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes can be masked by non-pathogenic Listeria. This phenomenon of Listeria overgrowth is not well understood. We present a mathematical model for the growth of a mixed population of L. innocua and L. monocytogenes that includes competition for a common resource and allelopathic control of L. monocytogenes by L. innocua when this resource becomes limited, which has been suggested as one potential explanation for the overgrowth phenomenon. The model is tested quantitatively and qualitativel

Rice allelopathy induced by methyl jasmonate and methyl salicylate.

Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and methyl salicylate (MeSA) are important signaling molecules that induce plant defense against insect herbivores and microbial pathogens. We tested the hypothesis that allelopathy is an inducible defense mechanism, and that the JA and SA signaling pathways may activate allelochemicals release. Exogenous application of MeJA and MeSA to rice (Oryza sativa L.) enhanced rice allelopathic potential and led to accumulation of phenolics, an increase in enzymatic activities, and gene transcription of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H), two key

Lichen secondary metabolites affect growth of Physcomitrella patens by allelopathy.

Lichen secondary metabolites can function as allelochemicals and affect the development and growth of neighboring bryophytes, fungi, vascular plants, microorganisms, and even other lichens. Lichen overgrowth on bryophytes is frequently observed in nature even though mosses grow faster than lichens, but there is still little information on the interactions between lichens and bryophytes. In the present study, we used extracts from six lichen thalli containing secondary metabolites like usnic acid, protocetraric acid, atranorin, lecanoric acid, nortistic acid, and thamnolic acid. To observe the i

What Drives Seasonal Mat Dynamics in Eutrophic Lake: Allelopathy or Environmental Gradients?

Eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems promotes the occurrence of filamentous macroalgae and free-floating macrophytes that form dense surface mat in the littoral zone of shallow water bodies. The structure of these communities is shaped by environmental gradients, species features, and tolerance to competition-related stressors. While laboratory studies show allelopathic potential of these primary producers, field-based evidence integrating chemical interactions with environmental gradients is still poorly understood. We conducted a two-season field study in eutrophic Lake Oporzyńskie to assess

Interspecific allelopathy suppresses potato cyst nematodes by 1-decanol derived from Houttuyniacordata.

Potato cyst nematodes (PCNs), Globodera rostochiensis, are an important group of quarantine plant-parasitic nematodes that pose a serious threat to the potato industry and global food security due to the lack of effective control measures. In this study, intercropping with Houttuynia cordata is shown to effectively reduce PCN populations while increasing potato yield. This effect is associated with the release of a key allelopathic volatile compound, 1-decanol, which exhibits strong nematicidal activity (LC50 = 31.5 μg/mL) markedly exceeding that of the commercial nematicide avermectin (LC50 =

Unraveling the chemical communication of root exudates and allelopathy for sustainable ecology and agriculture.

Root exudates, a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds secreted by healthy plant roots, play a central role in belowground chemical interactions, particularly through the phenomenon of allelopathy. These exudates, which include phenolic acids, flavonoids, amino acids, terpenoids, phytohormones, and fatty acids, do more than support nutrient mobilization and microbial associations. They act as allelochemicals that affect the germination, growth, and physiology of neighboring plants. Allelopathy influences key ecological processes such as plant succession, species dominance, and the

[Phospholipase Dα1 and hydrogen sulfide were involved in the allelopathy of oridonin to Arabidopsis thaliana].

We investigated the signal relationship between phospholipase Dα1 (PLDα1) and the gas signal molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in Arabidopsis thaliana response to the allelopathy of diterpenoid oridonin. The wild type Arabidopsis Columbia (WT), phospholipase Dα1 (PLDα1) deletion mutant pldα1, D-/L-cysteine desulfyrase synthetic deletion mutant d-cdes and l-cdes seedlings were used as experiment materials, while 60 μmol·L-1 oridonin was applied as treatment concentration. The results showed that oridonin significantly increased H2S content, PLD and D-/L-CDes activities, and gene expressions of PL

A critical reassessment of the novel weapons hypothesis and allelopathy as an adaptive strategy that facilitates plant invasion.

Plants have evolved an assortment of chemical adaptations that integrate environmental cues with developmental processes to regulate growth and reproduction. A subset of these phytochemicals may be considered allelopathic adaptations if they enhance fitness by suppressing competition for limiting resources. Despite compelling critiques by John Harper almost a half century ago, research on allelopathy nonetheless experienced a revival at the turn of the 21st century that gave rise to a 'novel weapons hypothesis' (NWH) to explain plant invasions. We briefly review the storied history of allelopa

Seaweed-coral interactions: variance in seaweed allelopathy, coral susceptibility, and potential effects on coral resilience.

Tropical reefs are in global decline with seaweeds commonly replacing corals. Negative associations between macroalgae and corals are well documented, but the mechanisms involved, the dynamics of the interactions, and variance in effects of different macroalgal-coral pairings are poorly investigated. We assessed the frequency, magnitude, and dynamics of macroalgal-coral competition involving allelopathic and non-allelopathic macroalgae on three, spatially grouped pairs of no-take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and non-MPAs in Fiji. In non-MPAs, biomass of herbivorous fishes was 70-80% lower, ma

Allelopathy and Identification of Five Allelochemicals in the Leaves of the Aromatic Medicinal Tree Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa.

Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa is an economically and therapeutically valuable tree. It is cultivated as a fruit plant in southeast Asian countries. In this research, we investigated the allelopathy and possible allelochemicals in the leaves of A. marmelos. Aqueous methanol extracts of A. marmelos exhibited significant inhibitory effects against the growth of Lepidium sativum, Lactuca sativa, Medicago sativa, Echinochloa crusgalli, Lolium multiflorum, and Phleum pratense. Bioassay-directed chromatographic purification of the A. marmelos extracts resulted in identifying five active compounds: umbel

Self-inhibition of growth and allelopathy through volatile organic compounds in Fusarium solani and Aspergillus fumigatus.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from fungi are known as their secondary metabolites from environmental sources. However, their physiological roles remain to be unclear. Even though the roles are still unknown, VOCs are deliberately released to convey information to both homologous and non-homologous organisms. We investigated the effects of single VOCs (hexanal, benzaldehyde, heptanal, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 3-octanone, 2-undecanone, 3-octanol, 2-Phenylethanol, 2-phenyl-2-propanol, phenylbenzaldehyde, 2-pentadecanone, β-trans-bergamotene, β-bisabolene, 2-methyl-5 -(1-methylethy

Variation in allelopathy of extracellular compounds produced by Cylindrotheca closterium against the harmful-algal-bloom dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense.

Allelopathy between algae is an ecological strategy that can facilitate or inhibit the occurrence of algal blooms. The role of allelopathic effects of marine microalgae Cylindrotheca closterium in other phytoplankton population dynamics are still limited. In the current study, the effects of cell-free filtrates of diatom Cylindrotheca closterium on two common dinoflagellates (Prorocentrum donghaiense and Prorocentrum cordatum), a chrysophyceae (Isochrysis galbana) and a diatom (Chaetoceros curvisetus) were investigated within controlled laboratory experiments. Changes in Toxin Production, Morphology and Viability of Gymnodinium catenatum Associated with Allelopathy of Chattonella marina var. marina and Gymnodinium impudicum.

Allelopathy between phytoplankton organisms is promoted by substances released into the marine environment that limit the presence of the dominating species. We evaluated the allelopathic effects and response of cell-free media of Chattonella marina var. marina and Gymnodinium impudicum in the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum. Additionally, single- and four-cell chains of G. catenatum isolated from media with allelochemicals were cultured to evaluate the effects of post exposure on growth and cell viability. Cell diagnosis showed growth limitation and an increase in cell volume, whic

Allelopathy in the natural and agricultural ecosystems and isolation of potent allelochemicals from Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) and Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa).

We have studied on allelopathy of plants and developed methods to identify the effective substances in root exudates, leaf leacheate, and volatile chemicals emitted from plants. We found traditional cover plants that show allelopathic activity are useful for weed control. It could eliminate the use of synthetic chemicals for this purpose. Allelopathy is a natural power of plants to protect themselves by producing natural organic chemicals. Some endemic plants in Asia, already known by farmers in the region, as either cover crops used in intercropping, hedgerow, or agroforestry, were found to p

Potent allelopathy and non-PSTs, non-spirolides toxicity of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium leei to phytoplankton, finfish and zooplankton observed from laboratory bioassays.

The dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium has been well known for causing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) worldwide. Several non-PSP toxin-producing species, however, have shown to exhibit fish-killing toxicity. Here, we report the allelopathic activity of Alexandrium leei from Malaysia to other algal species, and its toxicity to finfish and zooplankton, via laboratory bioassays. Thirteen microalgal species that co-cultured with Al. leei revealed large variability in the allelopathic effects of Al. leei on the test algae, with the growth inhibition rates ranging from 0 to 100%. Impact of repeated freeze-thaw cycles environment on the allelopathic effect to Secale cereale L. seedlings.

Allelopathy, as environmental stress, plays a prominent role in stress ecotoxicity, and global warming directly increases freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) frequency in the winter. Yet, the effect between FTCs environment and allelopathy stress is rarely known, and the interaction of allelopathy stresses lacks consideration. Here, we addressed interactions between artemisinin stress (AS) and A. trifida extract stress (AES) under Non-FTCs and FTCs environments. The results found that AS and AES had an antagonistic relation under Non-FTCs environment, while a strong synergism and cooperation under FTCs

Allelopathic interactions between the brown algal genus Lobophora (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) and scleractinian corals.

Allelopathy has been recently suggested as a mechanism by which macroalgae may outcompete corals in damaged reefs. Members of the brown algal genus Lobophora are commonly observed in close contact with scleractinian corals and have been considered responsible for negative effects of macroalgae to scleractinian corals. Recent field assays have suggested the potential role of chemical mediators in this interaction. We performed in situ bioassays testing the allelopathy of crude extracts and isolated compounds of several Lobophora species, naturally associated or not with corals, against four cor

Allelochemical signaling and phytohormone crosstalk in plants: molecular mechanisms and implications for sustainable weed management.

Phytotoxic effects from allelopathy occur due to signaling pathways that induce alterations in hormonal balance within the plants, thereby hindering weed growth. Signaling crosstalk between various hormones and signaling pathways (Ca2⁺, MAPK, ROS) is involved in the molecular response mechanisms found through omics. Utilizing such mechanisms would help develop new environmentally friendly methods for sustainable weed management. Allelopathy serves as an essential component of plant-plant interaction via controlling the secretion of secondary metabolites (allelochemicals), which affect the grow
