Management of endemic outbreaks of scabies with allethrin, permethrin, and ivermectin.

BACKGROUND: At three residences for the elderly, recurrent scabies infestations became out of control. Due to the failure of repeated, nonsynchronized therapeutic efforts with conventional external anti-scabies treatments, an eradication program had to be developed. We describe a protocol for the management of outbreaks of scabies. METHODS: According to the clinical examination and microscopically identified mites, all individuals of the population (IOP: patients, staff, and family members) were divided into two groups: (a) healthy and infested IOP; and (b) cases with crusted scabies. The fir

[Treatment of endemic scabies with allethrin, permethrin and ivermectin. Evaluation of a treatment strategy].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Ectoparasitic cutaneous infestations are still common problems in countries of Western Europe. Scabies is a highly contagious disease of the skin caused by Sarcoptes scabiei variatio hominis. It has a world-wide distribution and affects all ages with no specific gender predisposition. Scabies is of profound public health interest because certain environment factors such as overcrowding, poor hygiene, delayed treatment of primary cases and lack of public enlightenment are conducive to its spread. However, prompt and adequate therapy is rewarding and prevents further sp

Effect of continuous inhalation of allethrin-based mosquito coil smoke in the male reproductive tract of rats.

OBJECTIVES: Continuous inhalation of allethrin-based mosquito coil smoke may affect fertility, an aspect that has not received much attention. In this study, we attempt to understand the harmful effects on the male reproductive system caused by continuous exposure to allethrin-based mosquito coil smoke. METHODS: Adult Wistar rats were allowed to inhale mosquito coil smoke for 15-180 days, and male reproductive tract tissues (caput, cauda, and testes) were collected. Using standard biochemical techniques, changes in oxidative stress (lipid peroxidation) and antioxidant status was measured. His

Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk. (haramonting) protects against allethrin-exposed pulmo damage in rats: mechanistic interleukins.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Inhaling Allethrin (C19H26O3) may induce oxidative stress in lung cells by causing the formation of free radi-cals. Interleukins (IL) are a group of secreted cytokines or proteins and signaling molecules initially produced as an immune response by leukocytes. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk. (haramonting) contains antioxidants that may prevent lung damage induced by allethrin-containing electric mosquito repellents. In this study, six groups of rats were exposed to allethrin via an electric mosquito repellent, including positive, negative, and comparison control groups and three groups wer

Ninety-day toxicity and one-generation reproduction study in rats exposed to allethrin-based liquid mosquito repellent.

Rats exposed to liquid mosquito repellent (LMR) containing allethrin (3.6% w/w) 8-hrs/ day for a period of ninety days did not produce any signs of toxicity or death. Significant increases in relative weight of liver and adrenal in males, brain and thyroid in females were observed. No significant changes were noticed in clinical enzyme profile, gonadal enzymes and histopathology of vital organs except mild changes in the activities of liver and serum alkaline phosphates (ALP), testicular glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6PDH) and epididymal sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH). Rats exposed to LMR

Allethrin induced toxicity in the male reproductive tract of rats contributes to disruption in the transcription of genes involved in germ cell production.

Pyrethroids are known to be neurotoxic. However, their toxic effects including that of allethrin on the male reproductive tract are not elucidated. Adult male rats were treated orally with 25, 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg body weight allethrin every day for 60 days. Lipid peroxidation was increased (p < 0.001) in the caput, cauda, and testes. Nitric oxide production was increased (p < 0.001) in the caput, but unaltered in the cauda and testes. The activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase were decreased in the caput and cauda where as a decre

Exposure to allethrin-based mosquito coil smoke during gestation and postnatal development affects reproductive function in male offspring of rat.

The threat of zika virus looms throughout the world and the use of allethrin-based mosquito coils to prevent mosquito bites during and postpregnancy is on the rise. The aim of this study was to analyze the toxic effects of exposure to allethrin-based mosquito coil smoke in rats under conditions that reflect human settings. Pregnant female rats were exposed to mosquito coil smoke and same was continued to the male pups up to 111 days postparturition (21-day weaning plus up to 90 days postweaning). Increased oxidative stress, distorted antioxidant enzyme status, downregulation of genes involved

Pyrethroids: involvement of sodium channels in effects on inositol phosphate formation in guinea pig synaptoneurosomes.

The effects of pyrethroids were studied on phosphoinositide breakdown in guinea pig synaptoneurosomes. Similar to other agents that activate voltage-dependent sodium channels, type I and type II pyrethroids stimulated phosphoinositide breakdown. Type II pyrethroids, like deltamethrin and fenvalerate, were more potent and, at least for deltamethrin, more efficacious than type I pyrethroids, like allethrin, resmethrin and permethrin. The effects of type II pyrethroids could be partially inhibited by the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin. The effects of allethrin and resmethrin were not affecte

To coil or not to coil: application practices, perception and efficacy of mosquito coils in a malaria-endemic community in Ghana.

Although evidence of mosquito coils' impact on disease epidemiology is limited, they are popularized as mosquito-borne disease prevention devices. Their usage affects the environment, human and mosquito health. This study investigated the perception, usage pattern and efficacy of coils in a predominantly poor malaria-endemic Ghanaian peri-urban area. Information on protection methods, perception and usage pattern was garnered using questionnaires. The efficacy of commonly used coils in the area was then assessed on the malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae, in a glass chamber. Sole or co-applicati

Pyrethroids and Nectar Toxins Have Subtle Effects on the Motor Function, Grooming and Wing Fanning Behaviour of Honeybees (Apis mellifera).

Sodium channels, found ubiquitously in animal muscle cells and neurons, are one of the main target sites of many naturally-occurring, insecticidal plant compounds and agricultural pesticides. Pyrethroids, derived from compounds found only in the Asteraceae, are particularly toxic to insects and have been successfully used as pesticides including on flowering crops that are visited by pollinators. Pyrethrins, from which they were derived, occur naturally in the nectar of some flowering plant species. We know relatively little about how such compounds--i.e., compounds that target sodium channels

Interaction of pumiliotoxin B with an "alkaloid-binding domain" on the voltage-dependent sodium channel.

The alkaloid pumiliotoxin B (PTX-B) "activates" voltage-dependent sodium channels in synaptoneurosomes and neuroblastoma cells. It appears that PTX-B activates sodium channels by interacting with a site that is allosterically coupled to other sites on the sodium channel, namely two scorpion toxin sites and the brevetoxin site. In guinea pig cortical synaptoneurosomes, alpha-scorpion toxin, beta-scorpion toxin, and brevetoxin induce a dose-dependent potentiation of PTX-B-induced 22Na+ influx. The synergism with beta-scorpion toxin differentiates PTX-B from the alkaloid veratridine, which induce

[Scabies triggering Darier's disease].

An increased incidence of scabies has been noted in many countries. Difficulties may arise when unrecognized infestations trigger or aggravate other dermatological disorders. We present an instructive case of Darier's disease, which did not respond to appropriate therapy regimens due to constant triggering by an undetected underlying scabies infestation. In this case, a 44-year-old Italian man presented with typical symptoms of Darier's disease. In addition, the patient reported massive pruritus, which is rather uncommon in this disorder. The disease proved recalcitrant to established treatmen

Recurrent tonic-clonic seizures and coma due to ingestion of Type I pyrethroids in a 19-month-old patient.

CONTEXT: Pyrethroids are synthetic pyrethrin analogues that induce sodium-channel depolarization and hyperexcitation. Severe pyrethroid poisoning is manifested by a "Tremor Syndrome" (Type I cyano-agents) or a "Choreoathetosis/Salivation Syndrome" (Type II non cyano-agents). Very few reports of neurotoxic effects caused by Type I pyrethroids ingestion are available, and no human data concerning Type I pyrethroid blood levels in pediatric poisoning are reported in the medical literature. CASE DETAILS: A 19-month-old female patient presented with irritability and inconsolable crying that rapidl

Further studies of periodic miniature response in squid giant axons.

Electric responses of extremely small amplitudes (1-30 muV peak-to-peak) repeating with more-or-less definite periodicity could be induced by a variety of chemical stimulants applied to squid giant axons either extracellularly or intracellularly. The chemical stimulants studied include allethrin, aminopyridines, N-bromosuccinimide, dimethylamino-pyridine, glutaraldehyde, osmium tetroxide, parachloromercuribenzoate, rose bengal, scorpion venoms and veratridine. With several mild stimulants, it was possible to evoke periodic miniature responses unaccompanied by a fall in the resting membrane pot

Bioallethrin activates specific olfactory sensory neurons and elicits spatial repellency in Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Use of pyrethroid insecticides is a pivotal strategy for mosquito control globally. Commonly known for their insecticidal activity by acting on voltage-gated sodium channels, pyrethroids, such as bioallethrin and transfluthrin, are used in mosquito coils, emanators and other vaporizers to repel mosquitoes and other biting arthropods. However, whether specific olfactory receptor neurons are activated by pyrethroids to trigger spatial repellency remains unknown. RESULTS: We used behavioral and electrophysiological approaches to elucidate the mechanism of bioallethrin repellency in A

Toxicological effects of prolonged and intense use of mosquito coil emission in rats and its implications on malaria control.

Mosquito coil is a vector control option used to prevent malaria in low income counties, while some studies have addressed this issue, additional reseach is required to increase knowledge on the adverse health effects caused by the prolonged use of coils. In this study we investigated the toxicological effects of fumes from two locally manufactured mosquito coil insecticides (with pyrethroids: transfluthrin and d-allethrin as active ingredients) on male albino rats. For this, we recorded the haematological and biochemical indices, and made histopathology and mutagenicity evaluations in rats ex

[Ectoparasites. Part 1: lice and fleas].

Ectoparasites and epidermal parasitic skin diseases are a heterogeneous group of infections of the external layer of the skin. The most common forms world-wide are scabies, lice (Pediculosis capitis, corporis, vestimentorum and pubis), tungiasis and the hookworm-associated Larva migrans cutanea. The head louse is the most widespread parasite in children in Germany. The symptoms, apart from pruritus, eczematous skin eruptions and ictus reactions of the skin, are often unspecific and many differential diagnoses must be considered. Treatment of ectoparasites includes manual procedures, such as re
