OBJECTIVE: This study explored how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies support the nondiagnosing/nontreatment roles of allied health workers, examining challenges and risks AI may pose for the workforce and highlighting areas for expansion as AI use grows.
METHODS: We conducted 12 interviews with 14 key informants familiar with specific allied health occupations and how AI has been incorporated into their roles. Themes and gaps identified from peer-reviewed and gray literature informed our semi-structured interview guide. We used rapid content analysis to summarize findings from intervi

This study examined the factors in the process of occupational attainment for a single group, the allied health professions. A 14-variable causal model was developed to explain postcollege attainment of a job in one of five allied health professions: medical dietetics, medical social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech therapy. The sample was composed of 272 college students who responded to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program surveys of 1971 and 1980. Analysis indicated that several variables, including academic integration, having a science major, and being ori

Medical assistants are the fastest growing segment of primary care teams. Remarkably little is known about this emerging workforce. In this report, we present information based on a literature review, analysis of secondary workforce data, and interviews with key experts in the field that aim to highlight the basic aspects of medical assistants and discuss issues that need to be addressed in this rapidly growing occupation in the allied health workforce. Critical policy issues are raised about the future impact of a largely unregulated workforce as well as the potential impact of this field on

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Clinical reasoning is a critical skill for Allied Health professionals, enabling informed decision-making in patient care. While a wide variety of clinical reasoning models are taught across disciplines, it remains unclear which models are frequently applied in practice. The scoping review aimed to map the literature on clinical reasoning models used by allied health professionals.
METHODS: This review was informed by Joanna Briggs Institute's framework for scoping review. Searches were conducted across Medline, Embase, Emcare, SCOPUS, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library and gra

In an attempt to become professional, many allied health occupations have focused upon acquiring the traditional attributes associated with a profession while neglecting the professionalization process. As a result, members of allied health occupations that claim professional status may experience the problems of lack of occupational prestige, limited opportunity for vertical mobility, and occupational burn-out. A study was conducted to explore the possible links among level of training program socialization, level of professional identity, and level of intra-role conflict in medical technolog

Occupational violence is a worldwide, multifaceted problem affecting all industries, including healthcare. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of the experiences of 158 allied health professionals, 135 doctors, and 1229 nurses working in a rural area in eastern Australia. Response rates were 72 percent for allied health professionals and 62 percent for general practitioners (GPs) and nurses. Proportionately more nurses experienced occupational violence than did allied health providers and GPs. During the past 12 months (August 2001 to July 2002), 68 percent of nurses, compared with 47 percen

BACKGROUND: Paramedics respond to emergency scenes in often uncontrolled settings without being aware of potential risks. This makes paramedicine one of the most dangerous occupations. One of these dangers is the risk of contracting infectious diseases. Research in this area is predominantly focused on compliance in the use of protective equipment, attitudes and perceptions of paramedics, infectious disease policy, and exposure rates to blood and body fluids. The purpose of this scoping review was to determine what is known about the impact of infectious disease on the health of paramedics.

There is evidence for the efficacy of allied health care in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, barriers exist that hamper implementation of evidence into daily practice. We conducted a survey to investigate: (1) to what extent PD patients currently utilize allied health care for relevant problems in the core areas of allied health care and (2) the level of PD-specific expertise among allied health professionals. Questionnaires were sent to 260 patients and 297 allied health professionals. Referral rates were 63% for physical therapy, 9% for occupational therapy, and 14% for speech therapy. PD

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience a range of progressive motor and non-motor symptoms, that negatively affect their daily functioning, social participation and quality of life. Allied health therapies have emerged as an effective treatment approach-complementary to pharmacological and neurosurgical treatments-which reduces the impact of PD in daily life. In this article, we propose criteria for what constitutes specialized allied health care for PD, and we review allied health research in PD in terms of meeting these criteria and its outcomes for monodisciplinary approaches as we

Many patients with cerebellar ataxia have serious disabilities in daily life, while pharmacological treatment options are absent. Therefore, allied health care is considered to be important in the management of these patients. The goal of this review is to evaluate scientific evidence for allied health care in cerebellar ataxia, to identify effective treatment strategies, and to give recommendations for clinical practice and further research. A systematic search for clinical trials concerning allied health care in cerebellar ataxias was conducted using the electronic databases of PubMed, Medli

Remote delivery of allied health therapies has long been possible, but adoption has been limited in some disciplines until relatively recently. The COVID-19 pandemic drove dramatic increases in use of remote delivery within allied health. This review summarizes the latest evidence on remotely-delivered physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy and discusses associated challenges and opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Allied health clinicians need strong death literacy to navigate loss, grief, dying, and death. Their roles include system navigation, advocacy, and psychosocial support, often bridging healthcare, community, and social services. Adequate death literacy is essential for holistic, compassionate care. This study assessed death literacy among allied health clinicians in the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia.
METHODS: An anonymous, cross-sectional online survey conducted between February and March 2025 collected demographic, professional, and 29-item Death Literacy Ind

PURPOSE: Occupational therapy (OT) is a global health profession that promotes participation in meaningful occupations to enhance well-being, particularly for persons with disabilities. Occupational therapy is relatively new in many African countries and there is limited research regarding the role of OT in this region. Thus, this study aims to understand the role and scope of OT in Africa by exploring its unique contribution to healthcare and cultural considerations for practicing OT in various African contexts.

Allied health services such as physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy contribute to the early treatment of health disorders in children and adolescents and promote a healthy development. This article describes the utilization of these allied health services by children and adolescents in Germany and analyses its association with demographic and social factors. The analyses are based on the second wave of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS Wave 2, 2014-2017) including 15,023 participants. Trends are calculated in comparison

Hundreds of standard measures have been developed to assess a diverse array of conditions, characteristics, and outcomes essential to the practice of medical rehabilitation. These measures provide a common metric needed to coordinate care, communicate with stakeholders, and assess treatment efficacy. Allied health professionals typically rely on functional measures that correspond to their discipline and scope of practice, yet functional outcomes may be dependent on psychological and social (psychosocial) factors that affect a client's capacity to engage and actively participate in their care.

INTRODUCTION: Regional, rural, and remote people represent nearly half the world's population yet experience disproportionally higher disease, mortality, and disability rates, coupled with limited healthcare access. Occupational therapy has committed to occupational justice, yet no descriptive framework of services provided by occupational therapists in non-urban locations exists. Understanding current non-urban service practices will provide a basis for non-urban service development and research to reduce this inequity.
METHODS: Four databases were systematically searched for publications de

BACKGROUND: Primary care is essential for health care systems to promote health, prevent disease, and manage chronic conditions. However, a shortage of primary care physicians challenges the delivery of high-quality primary care services to the population, especially for those living with multimorbidity. To address this challenge, interprofessional primary teams consisting of primary care physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals (AHPs) have been rolled out in many jurisdictions. This approach allows physicians to focus on complex patient care, where less complex care can be delegate

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe the process and challenges from a project that aimed to develop processes, source new placements and place students primarily in the discipline of nursing, but also occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, social work, and speech therapy.
BACKGROUND: Clinical experience in health facilities is an essential element of health professional education, yet globally, there is a lack of clinical placements to meet demands. Educational providers are seeking placements in nontraditional facilities, yet little has been reported on the challenges in the process of
