Poisoning from Alocasia × amazonica Roots: A Case Report.

All parts of Alocasia × amazonica (A. amazonica, Araceae) pose a toxicological risk due to oxalate production. Ingestion of the plant extract may cause multi-organ damage and fatal outcomes. Given the rarity of poisoning cases, its toxicological profile and systemic effects remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to investigate and report an appropriate approach to managing a patient intoxicated with A. amazonica (Araceae). A case of intentional self-poisoning with A. amazonica is presented. The patient, a 63-year-old woman, ingested approximately 200-300 mL of liquid prepared fr

Alocasia odora poisoning due to calcium oxalate needle crystals in Japan.

Objective: To elucidate the actual circumstances of damage caused by Japanese Alocasia (A) odora. Materials and Methods: We investigated cases in Japan from our own hospital in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture as well as published reports. Results: A. dorais found in western Japan, and plants of the Alocasia genus are cultivated often. A. odora is frequently associated with food poisoning because its aboveground parts resemble those of Satoimo (Colocasia esculenta). Moreover, A. odora contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which cause poisoning symptoms, such as oral pain, nausea,

[Glucosidases specific for the cyanogenic glucoside triglochinin. Purification and characterization of beta-glucosidases from Alocasia macrorrhiza Schott].

beta-Glucosidases have been isolated from Alocasia macrorrhiza plants. The enzymes are highly specific for the hydrolysis of the cyanogenic glucoside triglochinin endogenous to this plant. Upon chromatography of protein extracts on cation exchange resins and Sephadex G-200, separation into various enzymatically active bands was observed. The main fractions possess molecular weights of approximately 310000 and 105 000, as shown by preparative ultracentrifugation in a linear saccharose gradient. The beta-glucosidases are composed of subunits (molecular weight 55 000 to 60 000), as revealed by so

Separation, purification, structure characterization, and immune activity of a polysaccharide from Alocasia cucullata obtained by freeze-thaw treatment.

In this study, ACP-1, a water-soluble polysaccharide was isolated from the roots of Alocasia cucullata (AC) using freeze-thaw treatment (FTT). Structural characterization revealed ACP-1 (2.10×105 Da) to be a homogeneous heteropolysaccharide primarily consisting of glucose, galactose, and arabinose, and a trace of fucose, rhamnose, and glucuronic acid. Methylation analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that the backbone of ACP-1 consisted of →[3)-β-D-Galp-(1]4→3,6)-β-D-Glcp-(1→3,6)-β-D-Glcp-(1→, with a branch at C-3. In vitro experiments demonstrated that ACP-1 significan
