Propofol-induced alpha rhythm.

The electroencephalographic effects of two intravenous sedative/hypnotic drugs, propofol and thiopental, were studied at three stable blood concentrations in 52 normal healthy volunteers. The higher concentration resulted in unresponsiveness (lack of response to auditory/tactile stimuli) in all subjects. This report describes the strong frontal-central rhythms apparent in this state using a quantitative description of oscillatory systems underlying the rhythm. These rhythms occur when sedative drug concentrations are greater than those producing the well-described increase in broadband beta-po

[Extraordinary variant of the alpha rhythm].

The authors describe a variant of alpha rhythm, which is remarkable because of its great amplitude (200-300 microV). It is observed quite exceptionally in children and adolescents with a severe encephalopathy of either ante- or perinatal etiology. They suggest that the surplus amplitude of this alpha rhythm could depend upon a deafferentation of the occipital cortex in patients with severe amblyopia.

Alpha rhythm and the pineal gland.

Alpha rhythm is classically described as a bilateral posterior rhythm of substantially constant frequency in the range of 8-13 Hz which is enhanced by mental relaxation and blocked by attention. Since the full expression of alpha rhythm has been shown to occur coincident with puberty, it is possible that the establishment of alpha rhythm is subject to neuroendocrine influences which govern psychosexual maturation. There is ample evidence to indicate that the pineal gland is implicated in cerebral maturation and psychosexual development. Nocturnal plasma melatonin levels have been shown to decl

REM alpha rhythm: diagnostic for narcolepsy?

A young man, in whom narcolepsy was subsequently diagnosed, had the simultaneous onset of quadriparesis and a rapid eye movement (REM)-sleep polysomnographic pattern. During this REM-sleep pattern, a waking alpha EEG rhythm, appearing when he was asked to close his eyes, immediately attenuated when he was instructed to open his eyes, after which the REM-sleep pattern persisted. The juxtaposition of REM sleep patterns and reactive alpha rhythms are likely unique to sleep paralysis and may prove valuable in diagnosing narcolepsy.

Dipole sources of the human alpha rhythm.

Dipole sources were investigated in 22 normal subjects with a variety of strategies available through the BESA program. When all the data were summed one regional source, located near the midline in the basal portions of the occipital lobe, explained 92% of the variance. Two regional sources, initially constrained for symmetry but subsequently freed from constraint placed them also in the occipital regions near the midline and reduced the residual variance to 4%. Pooled data obscure, however, the marked individual differences especially in regard to lateralization. In the individual case the m

Simultaneous EEG and fMRI of the alpha rhythm.

The alpha rhythm in the EEG is 8-12 Hz activity present when a subject is awake with eyes closed. In this study, we used simultaneous EEG and fMRI to make maps of regions whose MRI signal changed reliably with modulation in posterior alpha activity. We scanned 11 subjects as they rested with eyes closed. We found that increased alpha power was correlated with decreased MRI signal in multiple regions of occipital, superior temporal, inferior frontal, and cingulate cortex, and with increased signal in the thalamus and insula. These results are consistent with animal experiments and point to the

Study of human occipital alpha rhythm: the alphon hypothesis and alpha suppression.

Alpha rhythm of the parieto-occipital area is comprised of a parade of short-lived cortical excitations (alphons), each of which exhibits oscillations having a stable period within the alpha bandwidth. Strong alpha rhythm is produced by alphons extending over a larger cortical area, although an enhanced cortical current density may also contribute. Local suppression of alpha rhythm indicates when specific cortical areas become engaged in sensory or cognitive functions. Examples are provided for mental imagery, visual memory, auditory memory, and silent rhythming.

Blood pressure circadian rhythm alterations in alpha-synucleinopathies.

INTRODUCTION: We sought to analyze the blood pressure (BP) circadian rhythm in Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and pure autonomic failure (PAF) and to evaluate the effect of vasoactive and dopaminergic medications on BP fluctuations during activities of daily living. METHODS: We analyzed data from patients with PD (n = 72), MSA (n = 18), and PAF (n = 17) evaluated with 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) at our Center between 1996 and 2015. Comparisons between groups were performed according to (a) clinical diagnosis and (b) pharmacological treatment. ABPM parameters

Increase in alpha rhythm frequency after carotid endarterectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Besides preventing stroke, carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is reported to improve cerebral circulation and brain function. We tested whether this improvement is reflected by changes in the qEEG. METHODS: qEEG changes in 166 patients with a >70% stenosis of the internal carotid artery (ICA) were assessed after subtraction of the preoperative and postoperative spectra (eyes closed condition) before and 3 months after CEA. The mean frequency of the alpha band (MFA), the peak frequency of the alpha band (F alpha), and bands with limits relative to each patient's F alpha were studied in r

Alpha rhythms in audition: cognitive and clinical perspectives.

Like the visual and the sensorimotor systems, the auditory system exhibits pronounced alpha-like resting oscillatory activity. Due to the relatively small spatial extent of auditory cortical areas, this rhythmic activity is less obvious and frequently masked by non-auditory alpha-generators when recording non-invasively using magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG). Following stimulation with sounds, marked desynchronizations can be observed between 6 and 12 Hz, which can be localized to the auditory cortex. However knowledge about the functional relevance of the auditory

Slower alpha rhythm associates with poorer seizure control in epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Slowing and frontal spread of the alpha rhythm have been reported in multiple epilepsy syndromes. We investigated whether these phenomena are associated with seizure control. METHODS: We prospectively acquired resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) in 63 patients with focal and idiopathic generalized epilepsy (FE and IGE) and 39 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (HS). Patients were divided into good and poor (≥4 seizures/12 months) seizure control groups based on self-reports and clinical records. We computed spectral power from 20-sec EEG segments during eyes-closed wakef

Alpha-band rhythm suppression during memory recall reflecting memory performance.

Alpha-band rhythm is thought to be involved in memory processes, similarly to other spontaneous brain rhythms. Ten right-handed healthy volunteers participated in our proposed sequential short-term memory task that provides a serial position effect in accuracy rate. We recorded alpha-band rhythms by magnetoencephalography during performance of the task and observed that the amplitude of the rhythm was suppressed dramatically in the memory recall period. The suppressed region was estimated to be in the occipital lobe, suggesting that alpha-band rhythm is suppressed by activation of the occipita

Modulation of the parieto-occipital alpha rhythm during object detection.

Changes in the human neuromagnetic alpha rhythm were monitored during an object detection task to study the effects of visual shape processing on the parieto-occipital activity. Pictures of coherent meaningful objects, which the observers had to detect, and of disorganized meaningless non-objects were presented briefly between masks. The non-objects were systematically followed by a higher level of alpha than the objects, the difference emerging on average 400 msec after the stimulus, with a median delay of 130 msec after evoked response onsets in the occipital, temporal, and parietal cortices

[Adaptive regulation of cerebral biopotentials (alpha-rhythm) in neurotic patients].

With the aid of a feedback towards an increase in the EEG intensity, adaptive regulation of brain biopotentials (alpha-rhythm) was conducted in 22 patients with different forms of neurosis. It was established that in patients with an initial low level of alpha-rhythm its regulation was more significant, while in patients with an initially middle level of alpha-rhythms in the EEG, its regulation was less expressed. The clinical effect of regulation in all cases was positive. The study also demonstrated a crosscorrelation of connections in the process of regulation between such functions as alph

Seasonal rhythm of the plasma level of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone.

The present results indicate the presence of a seasonal rhythm of immunoreactive alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) in 20- to 40-year-old subjects of skin type I (light color of skin and eyes, red hair, no tanning after sun exposure) and skin type II (light color of skin, eyes, and hair, rare tanning) with raised levels of alpha-MSH in summer and low levels in winter. With increasing age of the investigated subjects, the seasonal rhythm seems to be lost. In subjects with skin type III (light skin, brown eyes and black hair, strong pigmentation after sun exposure) alpha-MSH shows

Alpha rhythm and Alzheimer's disease: Has Hans Berger's dream come true?

In this "centenary" paper, an expert panel revisited Hans Berger's groundbreaking discovery of human restingstate electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms (8-12 Hz) in 1924, his foresight of substantial clinical applications in patients with "senile dementia," and new developments in the field, focusing on Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent cause of dementia in pathological aging. Clinical guidelines issued in 2024 by the US National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) and the European Neuroscience Societies did not endorse routine use of rsEEG biomarkers in the

Synergetic fMRI-EEG brain mapping in alpha-rhythm voluntary control mode.

For the first time in neurobiology-related issues, the synergistic spatial dynamics of EEG and fMRI (BOLD phenomenon) was studied during cognitive alpha biofeedback training in the operant conditioning mode (acoustic reinforcement of alpha-rhythm development and stability). Significant changes in alpha-rhythm intensity were found in T6 electrode area (Brodmann area 37). Brodmann areas related to solving alpha-training tasks and maximally involved in the formation of new neuronal network were middle and superior temporal gyri (areas 21, 22, and 37), fusiform gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus (areas

Magnetic source imaging in fixation-off sensitivity: relationship with alpha rhythm.

A patient in whom a variety of abnormal EEG findings can be elicited by elimination of central vision and fixation demonstrates fixation-off sensitivity. The underlying mechanisms of fixation-off sensitivity and its relationship with alpha rhythm remain unclear. To obtain a better understanding of this issue, we used a whole-head magnetoencephalograph to study an epileptic child with fixation-off sensitivity resulting in a 3-Hz, large-amplitude oscillation (300 microV) over the occipital regions on the EEG. Magnetic source localization revealed alpha activity around the calcarine fissure and s
