The leaves and roots of Alpinia pricei Hayata are used as a traditional wrapping for food and as a cooking substitute for fresh ginger. Our previous study showed that ethanol extracts from the roots of A. pricei Hayata (EEAP) and its phenolic compounds have anti-inflammatory effects. The aims of this work were to further study the in vitro anticancer activity of EEAP and its active compounds with respect to various cancer cells. The results from an MTT assay demonstrated that EEAP decreased the cell population growth of CH27, HL-60, and A549 cells. Flow cytometric analysis of HL-60 cells expos

Two pairs of enantiomers of flavonoid oligomers (1a and 1b, 2a and 2b) along with one known chalcone (3) were isolated from the rhizomes of Alpinia platychilus. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data (MS and 1D/2D NMR). The absolute configurations of the flavonoid oligomers were established by their ECD spectra. Separation of the enantiomeric mixtures (1a and 1b, 2a and 2b) was achieved on a chiral column using hexane:isopropyl alcohol:ethanol (7:2:1) as eluents. The anticoagulant assay showed that 2a, 2b and 3 exhibited potent activities to prolong the prothrombin

Alpinia zerumbet, commonly known as shell ginger, is a plant of significant ornamental and medicinal value. In the present study, nine labdane-type diterpenoids, including four novel (1-4) and five known (5-9), were isolated and identified from the rhizomes of A. zerumbet. Anti-neuroinflammatory activities of the isolated labdane-type diterpenoids were evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated microglia BV2 cells. Compounds 3, 5, 6, and 8 could significantly inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Among them, the IC50 values of compounds 5 and 8 were 26.

Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B.L. Burtt & R.M. Smith, commonly known as shell ginger, is native to East Asia and valued as both an ornamental and culinary plant. Its leaves and rhizomes are used in herbal teas and to season foods such as rice and noodles. While important odorants in the rhizomes have been studied, those contributing to the leaves aroma remain unclear. This study identified 35 odorants in the leaves using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). Sixteen odorants were quantitated via stable isotope dilution assays, and their odor activit

Five new sesquiterpenoids, alpinoxyphyllols C‒G (6‒10), and 13 known ones were isolated from the fruits of Alpinia oxyphylla. Their structures were determined by extensive 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, [α]D, and ECD spectroscopic data, and quantum chemical calculation. Compounds 1, 2, and 5 could promote the cellular glucose uptake by 15.0 %, 10.3 % and 20.7 % at 20 µM. Compound 3 showed inhibitory activity against both αglucosidase and PTP1B with inhibition rates of 42.5 ± 1.2% and 21.5 ± 1.6% at 200 µM. This study manifests that the eremophilane-type sesquiterpenoids in A. oxyphylla possess promis

This investigation was carried out to study effects of Alpinia galanga rhizome on blood glucose levels. In normal rabbits, powdered rhizome and its methanol and aqueous extracts significantly lowered the blood glucose. Gliclazide also produced a significant decrease in blood glucose in the rabbits. In alloxan-diabetic rabbits, A. galanga and its methanol and aqueous extracts did not produce significant reduction in blood glucose. The hypoglycaemic effect of A. galanga in normal rabbits was comparable to gliclazide. The rhizome was found to contain high levels of certain minerals. Acute toxicit
