A woman presented with purulent infiltrating plaques on her hands and arms after a 7-year history of nephrotic syndrome. She was ultimately diagnosed with subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis, which is caused by Alternaria section Alternaria. The lesions completely resolved after 2 months of antifungal treatment. Interestingly, spores (round-shaped cells) and hyphae were observed in the biopsy and pus specimens, respectively. This case report highlights that distinguishing subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis from chromoblastomycosis may be difficult if the diagnosis is solely based on pathological findin

Extracts of Alternaria tenuis and Alternaria solani were separated into dialyzable (molecular weight less than 10,000) and non-dialyzable forms. The latter was further fractionated by gel filtration through Sephadex G-100 followed by ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The dialyzable material was fractionated by gel filtration through Sephadex G-50. The allergenic activities of the fractions obtained from the A. tenuis extract was measured in vitro by the radioallergosorbent test assay and the allergenic potency was measured by radioallergosorbent test inhibition assay. Alternaria is a fungus of the class Deuteromycetes and the family Dematiaceae. Fungi of this genus have generally been regarded as nonpathogenic and as contaminants when isolated from clinical specimens. Hypersensitivity to Alternaria spores, however, has long been recognized as a cause of allergic pulmonary disease. More recently, the organism has also been demonstrated to have potential for opportunistic invasion of immunosuppressed and debilitated patients. Presented is a case in which this organism was repeatedly isolated from naso-oral tissue specimens from an otherwise healthy patient. T

Alternaria leaf blight (ALB), caused by the Alternaria species complex, is an economic threat to mustard cultivation all over the world. In this study, 700 infected leaf samples were collected from 28 blocks across six districts of the Bundelkhand region, Uttar Pradesh, India. To assess the prevalence and distribution of Alternaria species, 28 representative isolates were selected for further study. Morphological traits separated the majority of the Alternaria isolates into three morphotypes corresponding to A. brassicae, A. brassicicola, and A. alternata, which cause leaf blight. The pathogen

BACKGROUND: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is the only known causative treatment for Alternaria allergy, but the difficulty in standardizing Alternaria extracts hampers its effectiveness and safety.
SUMMARY: Alternaria, a potent airborne allergen, has a high sensitization rate and is known to trigger the onset and exacerbation of respiratory allergies, even inducing fungal food allergy syndrome in some cases. It can trigger a type 2 inflammatory response, leading to an increase in the secretion of type 2 inflammatory cytokines and eosinophils, which are the culprits behind allergic symptoms. Di

Eleutherococcus senticosus (Ruper et Maxim) Maxim, a very important potential medicinal plant used for the treatments of neurasthenia, anti-aging, and kidney deficiency, is a perennial herb belonging to Araliaceae and mainly distributed in northeast China. With the development of its cultivation, many diseases start to occur and a previously unknown leaf spot was observed on this plant in July 2007 in Linjiang City, Jilin Province, China. This disease incidence reached 100% in some planting grounds and it has resulted in serious loss of acanthopanax production. This disease generally happens d

PURPOSE: To report a case of fungal keratitis after corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) surgery.
OBSERVATIONS: We report a case of fungal keratitis after CXL for post-refractive surgery ectasia. The patient presented 12 days after surgery with a corneal ulcer that was culture positive for Alternaria species of fungus. She subsequently developed a bacterial superinfection. The keratitis resolved with medical therapy, although the patient required a penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) due to central corneal scarring.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: To our knowledge, this is the first case of fungal ker

INTRODUCTION: Multiple skin localization of phaeohyphomycoses are rare and are encountered in immunodepressed subjects. We report a case due to Alternaria tenuissima in a patient given corticosteroids and IgA deficiency.
CASE REPORT: A 73-year-old man presented with ulceronecrotic lesions on the two lower limbs which had developed over 15 days and poor general health. He had been taking corticosteroids for retroperitoneal fibrosis for 15 days. Skin biopsies demonstrated monoclonal dysglobulinaemia with IgG kappa and IgA deficiency. Itraconazol treatment was successful.

UNLABELLED: Alternaria spp. cause different diseases in potato and tomato crops. Early blight caused by Alternaria solani and brown spot caused by Alternaria alternata are most common, but the disease complex is far more diverse. We first provide an overview of the Alternaria species infecting the two host plants to alleviate some of the confusion that arises from the taxonomic rearrangements in this fungal genus. Highlighting the diversity of Alternaria fungi on both solanaceous hosts, we review studies investigating the genetic diversity and genomes, before we present recent advances from st

A patient with a contributory history of stromal herpes presented with a severe hypopyon and multiple corneal infiltrates. Culture of corneal scrapings grew out a species of Alternaria, a generally nonpathogenic fungus. The presence of hyphae and budding yeast forms in the keratoplasty specimen gave further confirmation to the diagnosis.

Alternaria alternata is one of the most clinically relevant fungal allergens in pediatric patients with respiratory allergies. Sensitization to this mold has increased in recent decades and is influenced by environmental exposure, geographic location, climate change, and genetic predisposition. In children, Alternaria spp. are strongly associated with the development and worsening of asthma and allergic rhinitis, often contributing to severe and difficult-to-control forms of the disease. The major allergen, Alt a 1, plays a central role in the immunopathogenesis of Alternaria-induced allergies

PURPOSE: To discuss the role of voriconazole in the management of Alternaria keratitis.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: A 69-year-old man with a history of corneal foreign body removal developed a stromal infiltrate 2 months later that did not improve despite topical antibiotics and natamycin. On our initial examination, visual acuity (VA) was 20/40, and he had a central, full-thickness, reticular appearing infiltrate. Oral clarithromycin was added because of the atypical pattern of the infiltrate. However, no improvement was noted. A repeat culture revealed coagulase-ne

A 31-year-old man with AIDS developed a necrotic lesion on his nasal septum due to Alternaria alternata. Excision and treatment with amphotericin B resulted in cure. This case expands the spectrum of opportunistic pathogens that infect patients with AIDS. Visceral and mucosal infections due to Alternaria have been reported in at least seven other patients.

We describe a cardiac transplant patient who had human cutaneous alternariosis with a sporotrichoid distribution of skin lesions. In this patient identification of the causative organism Alternaria infectoria was achieved by sequencing the rDNA internal transcribed spacer domain. Treatment with itraconazole led to clinical resolution within 4 months.

BACKGROUND: sensitization to fungi spores is often associated with sensitization to other allergens and so it is difficult to estabilish the exact cause of illness.
OBJECTIVE: the aim of the study was to evaluate a group of patients monosensitized to Alternaria and to establish the prevalence, periodicity and clinical profile of this kind of sensitization.
METHODS: 37 subjects who were monosensitized to Alternaria (prick-test positive), according to a previous epidemiological study were evaluated. Clinical symptoms and the period of their occurrence were taken into consideration as well as i

A 50-year-old gardener with a 3-year history of pemphigus vulgaris and steroid-induced diabetes complained of various papulonodular lesions on the left elbow. The lesions had appeared 11 months previously. Skin biopsy showed chronic granulomatous inflammation of the dermis which contained septate hyphae and large spores mainly free. Fragments of the biopsy specimen, cultured on Sabouraud glucose agar without cycloheximide, for 4 days, produced soft white colonies which later turned blackish brown, especially on the underside. On the basis of the microscopic characters of the conidiophores and

We describe a patient who presented with hypoxemia and diffuse bilateral pulmonary infiltrates. The diagnosis of eosinophilic pneumonia was confirmed by bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial lung biopsy. The remarkable characteristic was reappearance of the symptoms on the patient's return home, suggesting the existence of etiologic agents in his house. An environmental survey of the patient's house yielded Alternaria alternata. A high titer of anti-A. alternata antibody (IgG) was detected in his serum, and the inhalation bronchoprovocation test with A. alternata antigen was positive. This

The fungus Alternaria is known to be allergenic and is one of the most common fungi worldwide. We investigated the extent to which exposure to Alternaria increases the severity of asthma. We undertook a prospective cohort study in Australia of 399 school children who had positive skin tests to one or more aeroallergens. Airway responsiveness to histamine, wheeze, and bronchodilator use in 1 mo was measured five times between 1997 and 1999. Airway hyperresponsiveness was defined as PD(20)FEV(1) = 3.9 micromol histamine. Airborne concentrations of Alternaria spores were measured throughout the s

The reality emerged of a non-negligible frequency of positive tests to "Alternaria". This was conducted by the inclusion of this mould in the standard allergy assessment, especially if a summer predominance of symptoms was known. A significant difference emerged between seasonal peaks which had to do with mono or polysensitisation. The highest frequency of positives was found near to humid surroundings or woods.
