Inflammasomes in Alveolar Bone Loss.

Bone remodeling is tightly controlled by osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and osteoblast-mediated bone formation. Fine tuning of the osteoclast-osteoblast balance results in strict synchronization of bone resorption and formation, which maintains structural integrity and bone tissue homeostasis; in contrast, dysregulated bone remodeling may cause pathological osteolysis, in which inflammation plays a vital role in promoting bone destruction. The alveolar bone presents high turnover rate, complex associations with the tooth and periodontium, and susceptibility to oral pathogenic insults and

The osteoimmunology of alveolar bone loss.

The mineralized structure of bone undergoes constant remodeling by the balanced actions of bone-producing osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts (OCLs). Physiologic bone remodeling occurs in response to the body's need to respond to changes in electrolyte levels, or mechanical forces on bone. There are many pathological conditions, however, that cause an imbalance between bone production and resorption due to excessive OCL action that results in net bone loss. Situations involving chronic or acute inflammation are often associated with net bone loss, and research into understanding the mec

Alveolar bone loss in obese subjects.

BACKGROUND: Obesity was found to be significantly associated with periodontal disease prevalence as measured by probing depth and clinical attachment loss. The aim of this study was to examine if obesity correlates with chronic periodontitis as diagnosed by radiographic alveolar bone loss. METHOD: Four hundred subjects > or =18 years old were included; 200 with body mass index (BMI) > or =30 kg/m2 (obese) and 200 with BMI < 25 kg/m2 (non-obese). Alveolar bone loss was determined from full mouth radiographs for each subject. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the association of o

Aging quantification on alveolar bone loss.

Objectives were to measure labial alveolar resorption using Lamendin's method; to correlate the measured values of resorption with age at death; to determine whether age influences alveolar resorption, and if so, to quantify this impact. The study was performed during the 1992-1995 period in identified war casualties in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Data on the date, month and year of birth, and on the month and year of death were known in all cases. Measurements were carried out in 845 anterior monoradicular maxillary and mandibular teeth from male bodies (n=198) aged 23-69, divided into five age g

Horizontal alveolar bone loss: A periodontal orphan.

BACKGROUND: Attempts to successfully regenerate lost alveolar bone have always been a clinician's dream. Angular defects, at least, have a fairer chance, but the same cannot be said about horizontal bone loss. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of horizontal alveolar bone loss and vertical bone defects in periodontal patients; and later, to correlate it with the treatment modalities available in the literature for horizontal and vertical bone defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in two parts. Part I was the radiographic evaluation of 150 orthopa

Men with HIV have increased alveolar bone loss.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal health in men with HIV remains understudied, despite suggestions of associations between HIV infection and gingival pocketing, periodontal attachment loss, and gingival inflammation. As antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved the quality of life for people living with HIV (PLWH), aging-related risk factors and comorbidities, including periodontitis, have emerged. This study aims to assess alveolar bone height, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) cytokines, and periodontal disease activity in men with and without HIV. METHODS: Ninety-three men (50 HIV+, 43 HIV-) aged 35-7

[Loss of marginal alveolar bone and tooth mobility].

In the article the relation between initial mobility of incisors of both jaws and the level of marginal alveolar bone is described. The regression lines representing the dependence of mobility on marginal bone level at various loading forces confirm stepwise the nature of the force transmission from tooth to periodontal support tissues. The dependence of regression line slope on increasing inflammatory periodontal pathology indicates increasing loading of alveolar bone over tension of connective tissue fibers as well as increasing of pressure. This can further accelerate alveolar bone resorpti

Premature alveolar bone loss in Erdheim-Chester disease.

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare histiocytosis also known as lipoid granulomatosis. Oral findings have not been reported previously to our knowledge. This case report documents evidence of oral sequelae of Erdheim-Chester disease. A patient whose course was followed for 10 years at the National Institutes of Health had premature alveolar bone resorption. He underwent full-mouth extraction at age 29 years because of severe periodontitis. Histopathologic evidence of Erdheim-Chester disease was demonstrated in the periodontal soft tissues. In the ensuring years, accelerated resorption of the res

Alveolar bone loss of senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM).

SAM-R/1/Iw (senescence-accelerated mouse, resistant) and P/2/Iw (senescence-accelerated mouse, prone) under a conventional environment and eating standard pellets were examined for alveolar bone loss and the presence of periodontitis around maxillary and mandibular molars as a function of age. Neither SAM strain manifested a chronic periodontitis similar to that in humans, and no obvious plaque and calculus were observed. However, in both strains, 15% of M3 was lost after 13 months of age, and alveolar bone loss gradually increased with advancing age. Though there was no significant difference

Patterns of alveolar bone loss in Nigerian Yorubas.

Unusual patterns of alveolar bone loss in 33 Nigerian Yorubas with severe periodontal disease are described. The subjects, aged 15-50 yr represented 1.4% of a population of dental patients in Western Nigeria. Periodontal pocketing and alveolar bone loss in the incisor and first molar regions, far in advance of other mouth areas, were the criteria for inclusion in this report. Intra-oral radiographs showed advanced horizontal or crescentic bone resorption in incisor regions, and vertical or arc-like bone defects around first molars. Incisors and first molars were frequently missing as a result

Influence of submandibulectomy on alveolar bone loss in rats.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of dry mouth and its public health impact are increasing as the result of a progressively larger, medicated older population and because chronic diseases, like periodontitis, are prevalent pathologies among elderly patients. Periodontitis and continuous remodeling and rebuilding alveolar processes greatly affect the margin of the alveolar bone, and there is evidence indicating the role of submandibular glands in the regulation of immune/inflammatory reactions. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of submandibular-sublingual complex ablation (Sx) on alveo

Radiographic measurements of alveolar bone loss in the rat.

A new method to evaluate alveolar bone loss in rodents is described. The palatal and lingual halves of maxillae and mandibles were radiographed. On enlarged positive prints, 5 vertical distances were drawn at defined sites from the cemento-enamel junction to points revealing fully intact bone structure. These were either located on the alveolar crest or at the depth of intrabony defects. These distances were recorded with a trace-reading pen coupled to a computer. Results were expressed in mm for each site separately and totals (left plus right values) for either maxillae or mandibles were cal

Part II. Minimizing alveolar bone loss during and after extractions. Protocol and techniques for alveolar bone preservation.

Alveolar ridge resorption accelerates following extraction of teeth and the residual defect varies from socket to socket. This article proposes a new treatment oriented classification of extraction defects. It also reviews several graft materials and membranes that aid in the decision for selecting an appropriate socket preservation technique. The algorithm developed by the authors helps design a potentially successful treatment plan based on the classification of extraction defects, with choices ranging from no treatment to complex grafting procedures (i.e. allogenic block grafts). Probiotics ameliorate alveolar bone loss by regulating gut microbiota.

OBJECTIVES: Oestrogen deficiency is an aetiological factor of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO), which not only decreases bone density in vertebrae and long bone but also aggravates inflammatory alveolar bone loss. Recent evidence has suggested the critical role of gut microbiota in osteoimmunology and its influence on bone metabolisms. The present study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of probiotics on alveolar bone loss under oestrogen-deficient condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inflammatory alveolar bone loss was established in ovariectomized (OVX) rats, and rats were daily intrag

Alveolar bone loss and crowding in adult periodontal patients.

The present study aimed to examine whether local crowding and tooth angulation in the mandibular incisor region led to alveolar bone loss in patients with moderate periodontal disease. The sample comprised 27 patients from the Department of Periodontology aged 29-57 yr. Mesiodistal tooth angulation and crowding, defined as an overlap of 2 mm or more, were assessed from dental casts. Alveolar bone loss was assessed from intraoral standardized paralleling radiographs by two methods, the absolute bone level (ABL), recorded from the cementoenamel junction, and the relative bone level (RBL), a new
