Neuroprotective effect of Amaranthus lividus and Amaranthus tricolor and their effects on gene expression of RAGE during oxidative stress in SH-SY5Y cells.

Amaranthus plants, or spinach, are used as food sources worldwide. Amaranthus leaves are rich in antioxidant compounds, which act as free radical scavengers. Oxidative stress caused by the aberrant production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) represents an important mechanism for neuronal dysfunction and cell loss in different neurodegenerative disorders. The neuroprotective effects of antioxidant-containing plants have been extensively demonstrated in different models of neurotoxicity. However, few studies have investigated the antioxidant properties of Amaranthus extracts and their effect on

Mineral profile and variability in vegetable amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor).

Populations in North India depend on a number of vegetable crops of which Amaranthus spp. is the most important since it is the only crop available in the hot summer months when no other foliage crop grows in the field. However, reports on mineral composition of leaves are rare with absolutely no information on the qualitative improvement of foliage yield with special reference to minerals. Studies on correlation among the minerals as well as with yield and leaf attributes are also lacking. Hence, we report the proximate mineral composition in 30 strains of A. tricolor along with some suggesti

Identification of an allergenic calmodulin from Amaranthus palmeri pollen.

INTRODUCTION: Pollens are an important source of allergens that trigger rhinitis or asthma. The allergenic extracts of pollens used to diagnose and treat allergies contain different allergenic antigens. Isolated allergenic proteins are employed in in vitro assays, skin tests and allergenic-specific immunotherapy. Calcium-binding allergens are clinically relevant antigens, and their allergenicity can be affected by Ca2+ binding. In this work, a calmodulin was identified as an allergen from Amaranthus palmeri pollen, an important source of pollinosis in Europe, Asia and North America. MATERIALS

Male Linked Genomic Region Determines Sex in Dioecious Amaranthus palmeri.

Dioecy, the separation of reproductive organs on different individuals, has evolved repeatedly in different plant families. Several evolutionary paths to dioecy have been suggested, but the mechanisms behind sex determination is not well understood. The diploid dioecious Amaranthus palmeri represents a well-suited model system to study sex determination in plants. Despite the agricultural importance of the species, the genetic control and evolutionary state of dioecy in A. palmeri is currently unknown. Early cytogenetic experiments did not identify heteromorphic chromosomes. Here, we used whol

Physicochemical properties of amaranthin, the lectin from Amaranthus caudatus seeds.

Amaranthin is the lectin present in the seeds of Amaranthus caudatus, which specifically binds the T-disaccharide (Gal beta 1,3GalNAc alpha-O-). The lectin is composed of a single type of subunit with Mr = 33,000-36,000 (Rinderle et al., 1989). Equilibrium sedimentation (Mr = 62,900) and low-angle laser light scattering (Mr = 61,400) methods have been used to unambiguously establish the native multimeric structure of amaranthin as a homodimer. These absolute molecular weight methods and the calculated Stokes radius (27.2 A) indicate that the amaranthin dimer is highly compact relative to typic
