The natural product ambergris is only found rarely on beaches, as jetsam. Even more scarce, or even absent, are accounts of flotsam ambergris. Here, we report the chemical analysis of a rare, large piece (>100kg) of flotsam found in the Atlantic in 2019. About 95% of subsamples from the outside of the coprolith was soluble in dichloromethane. Of this, FTIR spectroscopy, APCI-MS and GC-MS indicated the presence of ambrein. Radiocarbon dating indicated that the sample was post 1950s in age. The 13C/12C isotope ratio (-22.5 ‰) was typical of those reported to date for whale 'body' ambergris. Meta

We describe determination of the dichloromethane-soluble components of 12 samples of the natural product, ambergris, using capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Ambergris is produced in vivo in about 1% of Sperm whales and is used in perfumery and for odour fixation. Whilst descriptions of ambergris chemistry appeared until about 40 years ago, few accounts of analyses of whole extracts of multiple samples of ambergris by GC-MS have been published before. As expected, our analyses revealed that the major component (up to 97% of the dichloromethane-soluble material) was ambrein

UNLABELLED: (-)-Ambrox, the smelling principle in ambergris of sperm whales, is a saturated polycyclic terpenoid ether with multiple tertiary and quaternary centers. Despite these structural features, it is readily biodegradable and thus represents an interesting case to understand the degradation pathway of a complex, saturated polycyclic terpene. We isolated two Sphingomonas spp. strains from activated sewage sludge capable of rapidly mineralizing (-)-Ambrox. The structures of seven isolated metabolites were determined by 2D-NMR, and further metabolite structures were proposed based on their

Tourism is central to Belize's economy, yet the influx of international travelers may contribute to infectious disease introduction and transmission among local workers, including SARS-CoV-2. In June 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study among tourism and government workers in the tropical island tourism center of Ambergris Caye, Belize. The goal of this study was to determine SARS-CoV-2 antibody prevalence for both vaccination (anti-spike protein) and natural infection (anti-nucleocapsid protein), vaccine uptake, history of COVID-like symptoms, and risks for infection t

(-)-Ambrox, a highly prized and commercially significant component of ambergris, finds widespread application in perfumery, cigarettes, cosmetics, and the food industry. Despite considerable attention to this research area over the years, an environmentally friendly and practical method for synthesizing (-)-ambrox has remained elusive. This study presents a succinct and efficient approach to (-)-ambrox synthesis, involving two consecutive alkylations at C-6, followed by an acid-catalyzed cyclization to give bicyclic ketones starting from (R)-carvone. Subsequent reduction, Barton Vinyl Iodide s

Layered microbial communities, called microbial mats, commonly form in the intertidal or shallow subtidal zone, particularly in areas protected from wave action and strong currents. These microbial mats can accrete by growing around sand-sized detrital mineral grains in a two-step process known as trapping and binding. We hypothesized that trapping and binding by microbial mats can promote the stabilization of sand-sized sediment and is therefore a process that should be considered as an important mode of biostabilization for sandy coastlines threatened by sea-level rise and increased storm in

The triterpenoid (+)-ambrein is a natural precursor for (-)-ambrox, which constitutes one of the most sought-after fragrances and fixatives for the perfume industry. (+)-Ambrein is a major component of ambergris, an intestinal excretion of sperm whales that is found only serendipitously. Thus, the demand for (-)-ambrox is currently mainly met by chemical synthesis. A recent study described for the first time the applicability of an enzyme cascade consisting of two terpene cyclases, namely squalene-hopene cyclase from Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius (AaSHC D377C) and tetraprenyl-β-curcumene cyc

Crocodylus moreletii (Morelet's crocodile) and Crocodylus acutus (American crocodile) are generalist, apex predators of subtropical aquatic habitats in Central America. As top predators, crocodiles may be exposed to high levels of micro pollutants, such as trace elements via bioaccumulation that enter the food web as a consequence of human activities. As such, the status of their population can be considered indicative of that of the entire ecosystem - i.e., crocodiles constitute as genuine indicator species. In this study, we report on the concentrations of trace elements found in the caudal
