Ameloblastoma and keratinizing ameloblastoma in dogs.

Ameloblastomas reviewed in this report were locally invasive neoplasms arising from the epithelial structures of the dental lamina, and were characterized histologically by features which are unique to dental lamina epithelium. These include the formation of epithelial sheets in which the cells nearest the stroma form a palisading row aligned perpendicularly to the basement membrane and the cells toward the center separate from each other except at desmosomal attachments. This is similar to the appearance of th stellate reticulum of the early enamel organ. Other features include epithelial cor

Plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma: a rare variant of ameloblastoma.

The term plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma refers to a pattern of epithelial proliferation that has been described in cystic cavity. Because of unilocular presentation, it is commonly misdiagnosed as an odontogenic cyst. However, they may often behave clinically as biologically aggressive tumors. These tumors show high incidence of cortical perforation, tooth resorption and a high rate of recurrence after simple enucleation. This paper aims to provide an insight into this biologically distinct entity. A literature review on the topic has been added along with a case report highlighting the app

Sinonasal Ameloblastoma.

Ameloblastomas are benign but aggressive odontogenic tumors that most commonly affect the posterior mandible. Approximately 15% occur in the maxilla, with a subset thought to originate from the epithelial lining of the sinonasal cavities. Histologically, sinonasal ameloblastomas are identical to those of the oral cavity, with classical features of palisaded columnar basilar cells surrounding a central proliferation that resembles the stellate reticulum of a developing tooth. Unlike the gnathic variant, sinonasal ameloblastomas tend to affect males more than females, and the incidence of diagno

Peripheral ameloblastoma.

A case of peripheral ameloblastoma in a 57-years-old woman is presented, along with a discussion of the clinical and histological characteristics of the lesion. After clinical and radiographic examinations, and with a differential diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma, an excisional biopsy was performed and the material collected was sent for histological examination. On the basis of the histopathological diagnosis, a second operation was performed with a wide safety margin, including bone tissue, which did not show any involvement with the odontogenic neoplasm.

Ameloblastoma of the jaws.

Ameloblastoma is a histologically benign tumor derived from odontogenic apparatus. The tumor can infiltrate into surrounding tissues. Although it is benign, it presents symptoms of a malignant tumor, such as infiltration into the lungs, pleura, regional and distant metastases, orbit, base of skull, brain and has resulted in death. It also has a high incidence of recurrences, the existence of regional or distant metastasis, showing a microscopic pattern of ameloblastic carcinoma with cytologic features of an increasing nuclear/cytoplastic ratio, nuclear hyperchromatism, and the presence of mito

Maxillary unicystic ameloblastoma.

The authors present the case of a 17-year-old White male patient complaining of enlargement in the gingival region and the fundus of the left maxillary anterior vestibular sulcus. The clinicopathological diagnosis was plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma. With this report, the authors illustrate the importance and complexity of a differential diagnosis of lesions with a cystic aspect in the anterior region of the maxilla, among them inflammatory radicular cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, adenomatoid odontogenic and unicystic ameloblastoma.

Peripheral ameloblastoma: case report.

Ameloblastoma is a benign tumour of the odontogenic tissues which may be aggressive in the involved area with a high rate of recurrence if not adequately removed, and represents 1% of all tumours of the mouth, generally appearing in the bones of the jaw. Although it is fairly rare, tumours with such histopathology have been described in the soft tissue and are named peripheral or extraosseus ameloblastoma. Potential cells of origin are ondontogenic residue of the dental lamina, pluripotent cells in the basal layer of the epithelial mucosa, and pluripotent cells of the minor salivary glands. Se

Phosphoprotein Profile of Ameloblastoma.

OBJECTIVE: Ameloblastoma (AM) is a well-known benign odontogenic tumor recognized for its aggressive nature, believed to originate from tooth-forming tissue or the dental follicle (DF). Phosphoproteins are crucial for cellular signaling, enabling intracellular communication and regulating various physiological processes. In cancer, phosphoproteins are fundamental to both pathogenesis and pathophysiology. However, studies on phosphoproteins in AM are still limited. This study aimed to compare phosphoprotein profile and identify the crucial phosphoproteins between AM and DF. METHODS: The phosph

Molecular pathogenesis of ameloblastoma.

Ameloblastoma (AM) is a benign, although aggressive, epithelial odontogenic tumour originating from tooth-forming tissues or remnants. Its aetiopathogenesis remains unclear; however, molecular analysis techniques have allowed researchers to progress in understanding its genetic basis. The high frequency of BRAF p.V600E as a main driver mutation in AM is well established; nevertheless, it is insufficient to explain its tumourigenesis. In this review, we aimed to integrate the current knowledge about the biology of AM and to describe the main genetic alterations reported, focusing on the finding

Peripheral ameloblastoma: case report.

A case of peripheral ameloblastoma, a rare odontogenic tumour, is presented. This tumour appears to differ from endo-osseous ameloblastoma by the absence of local malignancy. It exhibits a less aggressive and destructive behavior and does not invade the underlying bone. Conservative treatment of the tumour is the treatment of choice.

Biology of metastasizing ameloblastoma.

The present report of a malignant metastasizing ameloblastoma and a critical review of literature was undertaken in an attempt to better understand the biological potential and behavior of this rare tumor and thus to facilitate its clinical management. Most of the 26 patients with a proven malignant ameloblastoma including the present case had developed multiple recurrences. The lung was the most frequent metastatic site (88%) followed by regional lymph nodes (27%). Furthermore metastases were observed in some cases in the bone, brain, kidney, small intestine and liver. The interval between di

An Ameloblastoma in the Middle Ear.

An ameloblastoma is a locally aggressive odontogenic tumour that commonly develops from the odontogenic epithelium within the jawbone. Here we present for the first time a case of a rare primary ameloblastoma in the middle ear cavity, along with some consideration of its treatment and a new classification. A 65-year-old woman presented with a left middle ear cavity tumour. Pathological examination led to the diagnosis of an ameloblastoma. We resected the tumour along with an extensive part of the middle ear mucosa, which made it difficult to have an adequate margin. It is recommended that the

Ameloblastoma of the anterior mandible.

Ameloblastoma or adamantinoma is the rarest of the three forms of tumor of the odontogenic type. They are benign, locally aggressive neoplasms arising from ameloblasts, which typically occur at the angle of the mandible, and are often associated with an un-erupted tooth and must, therefore, be differentiated from a dentigerous cyst which will be centered on the crown. When in the maxilla (less common), they are located in the premolar region, and can extend up in the maxillary sinus. Ameloblastoma is reported to constitute about 1-3% of tumors and cysts of the jaws. The tumor is by far more co

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma of the mandible.

The Desmoplastic Ameloblastoma exhibits important differences in anatomical distribution, histologic appearance and radiographic findings compared with the classic type of ameloblastoma. We describe a case of desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma localized in the mandibular anterior portion of the jaw, extending posteriorly in the left side. The tumor was expansile, slowly growing and painless. The radiographic finding showed diffuse, radiolucent lesion with cortical bone expansion. Surgical excision was performed and follow-up examination done after two years disclosed no recurrence. The purp

Plexiform ameloblastoma of the mandible.

Ameloblastoma is a common and aggressive odontogenic epithelial tumor. It has an aggressive behavior and recurrent course, and is rarely metastatic. Ameloblastoma represents 1% of all tumors and cysts that involve the maxillomandibular area and about 10% of the odontogenic tumors. It is primarily seen in adults in the third to fifth decade of life, with equal sex predilection. Radiographically, it appears as an expansile radiolucent, with thinned and perforated cortices, and is known to cause root resorption. As it shares common radiographic features with other lesions such as the giant cell t

Calretinin expression in ameloblastomas.

AIMS: Calretinin is a 29-kDa calcium-binding protein which is expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as in many other normal and pathological human tissues. The objective of this study was to determine whether calretinin was expressed in the epithelium of ameloblastomas. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-seven cases of unicystic ameloblastoma and 31 cases of solid and multicystic ameloblastoma were studied. Five-micron sections were immunohistochemically stained using either antiserum 7696 from Swant, or antiserum 18-0211 from Zymed with a standard ABC method. The results w
