Purification, characterization and biological activity of urodele and anuran sex-pheromones were reviewed. Female-attracting pheromones obtained from the abdominal gland of Cynops pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda males are peptides consisting of 10 amino acid residues being designated sodefrin and silefrin, respectively. Each pheromone attracted only conspecific females. Molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding sodefrin and silefrin revealed that both are generated from precursor proteins. Synthesis of these pheromones is regulated by prolactin (PRL) and androgen. Responsiveness of the female vomerona

In amphibian epidermis mucus is thought to constitute the matrix material that links keratin filaments present in cells of the corneous layer. As contrast in mammals, and perhaps in all amniotes, histidine-rich proteins form the matrix material. In order to address the study of matrix molecules in the epidermis of the first tetrapods, the amphibians, an autoradiographic and electrophoretic study has been done after administration of tritiated histidine. Histological analysis of amphibian epidermis shows that histidine is taken up in the upper intermediate and replacement layers beneath the cor

Expression of olfactory marker protein (OMP) in olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) in two amphibians was investigated by immunohistochemical methods. The OMP immunoreactivity was observed in the cilia, apical dendritic knobs, dendrites and somas of ORNs; the axons of ORNs also showed intense immunoreactivity for OMP throughout their course from the olfactory epithelium to the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb. Seven days after olfactory nerve transection in salamander, the number of OMP-positive ORNs was markedly reduced in the ipsilateral epithelium. The results demonstrate that amphibian

Acute burns and chronic wounds frequently fail to heal owing to various reasons. Most drugs currently used for wound therapy in clinical practice have notable drawbacks, making their application a substantial concern. For instance, anti-inflammatory drugs can exert multisystem toxicity, and cellular therapies are costly and difficult to retain. In recent years, natural functional proteins derived from animals and plants have gained increasing attention owing to their unique biological activities, low cost, and broad application prospects in wound therapy. Herein, we isolated a new protein (JH0

The present study reveals the immunolocalization of the MARCKS-like protein in two urodeles and an anuran during the initial stages of appendage regeneration. This acidic protein of 22-32 kDa interacts with the dynamic cytoskeleton of activated keratinocytes and blastema cells and is believed to be among the initial signaling factors stimulating limb regeneration in the axolotl. Bioinformatics controls indicate presence of homologous MARCKS-like proteins also in other amphibian species. The present study aims to generalize the presence of this protein during the first 2-8 days of appendage reg

The occurrence and cellular distribution of chromogranin A (CgA) and of two synthetic secretogranin II (SgII)-fragments (termed C23-3 and C26-3) has been investigated immunohistochemically in the endocrine pancreas of five amphibian species. Immunoreactivity for CgA was detected only in specimens of the genus Rana, whereas for SgII it was found in all the urodeles and anurans studied. Either CgA or the SgII-fragment displayed its own cellular distribution patterns in the endocrine pancreas of a given species. Moreover, immunoreactivity for both regions (C23-3 and C26-3) of the SgII-molecule ex

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunohistochemistry staining is specific to glial cell intermediate filaments. GFAP has been reported in some diseases related to injury of central nervous system. The actual normal biological function of GFAP in the retinas of some vertebrates is still under investigation. The current study examines the distribution of GFAP in the retinas of various species of amphibian, reptilian, birds, and mammals by immunohistochemical technique. The results indicated that GFAP localization in the retina is related to specific species. Unique, homogeneous GFAP label

The vertebrate limb is one of the most intensively studied organs in the field of developmental biology. Limb development in tetrapod vertebrates is highly conserved and dependent on the interaction of several important molecular pathways. The bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling cascade is one of these pathways and has been shown to be crucial for several aspects of limb development. Here, we have used a Xenopus laevis transgenic line, in which expression of the inhibitor Noggin is under the control of the heat-shock promoter hsp70 to examine the effects of attenuation of BMP signaling

This study investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying thermal resilience in the Cynops orientalis (Chinese fire-bellied newt) through functional characterization of CoHsp70, a cytosolic heat shock protein 70 homolog. Comparative genomic analysis revealed conserved structural domains (ATPase, substrate-binding domain, and EEVD motif) and > 80% sequence identity with amphibian orthologs. Tissue-specific profiling identified fat tissue as the predominant site of CoHsp70 expression. Temperature-dependent transcriptional regulation exhibited bidirectional dynamics: rapid induction under acute

The expression of filaggrin in differentiated keratinocytes and the association of filaggrin mutations with ichthyosis vulgaris and atopic dermatitis suggest that this prototypical member of the S100 fused-type protein (SFTP) family plays a key role in the epidermal barrier to the environment. Here, we report that SFTP genes are present not only in amniotes but also in amphibians. Four SFTPs are expressed in the skin of the frog Xenopus laevis. The results of this study indicate that filaggrin has evolved from an ancestral SFTP that may have contributed to skin modifications during the evoluti

Whereas in all other vertebrates the Müllerian ducts of genetic males are aborted during development, under the influence of Müllerian-inhibiting substance, in the caecilian amphibians they are retained as a pair of functional glands. It has long been speculated that the Müllerian gland might be the male accessory reproductive gland but there has been no direct evidence to this effect. The present study was undertaken to determine whether the caecilian Müllerian gland secretory proteins would bear antigenic similarity to secretory proteins of the prostate gland and/or the seminal vesicles of a

The air-liquid interface of the mammalian lung is lined with pulmonary surfactants, a mixture of specific proteins and lipids that serve a dual purpose-enabling air-breathing and protection against pathogens. In mammals, surfactant proteins A (SP-A) and D (SP -D) are involved in innate defence of the lung. Birds seem to lack the SP-D gene, but possess SP-A2, an additional SP-A-like gene. Here we investigated the evolution of the SP-A and SP-D genes using computational gene prediction, homology, simulation modelling and phylogeny with published avian and other vertebrate genomes. PCR was used t

The surface layer of the skin and hard skin appendages of land-dwelling vertebrates depend on epithelial differentiation-associated proteins, which increase the mechanical resilience of cells upon cornification. These proteins, exemplified by keratin-associated proteins (KRTAPs) in mammals and epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) proteins in all tetrapods, have low amino acid sequence complexity and interact with other proteins to form stable supramolecular structures. No KRTAPs and only few EDC proteins exist in amphibians, suggesting an alternative mechanism of epithelial cornification. H

Salinization of freshwater ecosystems poses an escalating threat to amphibian populations worldwide, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac responses to salt stress remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed DIA-based quantitative proteomics and phosphoproteomics to systematically investigate the dynamic protein expression and phosphorylation profiles in the heart of Pelophylax nigromaculatus across low-salt, high-salt, and recovery stages. A total of 3747 proteins and 623 phosphopeptides were identified. Kinase prediction analysis revealed that ERK2, along with AGC, TKL, TK

Poisons are common in nature, where they often serve the organism in chemical defense. Such poisons either are produced de novo or are sequestered from dietary sources or symbiotic organisms. Among vertebrates, amphibians are notable for the wide range of noxious agents that are contained in granular skin glands. These compounds include amines, peptides, proteins, steroids, and both water-soluble and lipid-soluble alkaloids. With the exception of the alkaloids, most seem to be produced de novo by the amphibian. The skin of amphibians contains many structural classes of alkaloids previously unk

One of the major routes of transmission of rickettsial and ehrlichial diseases is via ticks that infest numerous host species, including humans. Besides mammals, reptiles and amphibians also carry ticks that may harbor Rickettsia and Ehrlichia strains that are pathogenic to humans. Furthermore, reptiles and amphibians are exempt from quarantine in Japan, thus facilitating the entry of parasites and pathogens to the country through import. Accordingly, in the current study, we examined the presence of Rickettsia and Ehrlichia spp. genes in ticks associated with reptiles and amphibians originati

Neonicotinoids are neurotoxic insecticides and are often released into nearby wetlands via subsurface tile drains and can negatively impact nontarget organisms, such as amphibians. Previous studies have indicated that imidacloprid, a commonly used neonicotinoid, can cross the amphibian blood-brain barrier under laboratory conditions; however, little is known about the impact of low concentrations in a field-based setting. Here, we report aqueous pesticide concentrations at wetland production areas that were either connected or not connected to agricultural tile drains, quantified imidacloprid

The authentic prolactin (PRL) designated PRL1 is a multifunctional hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland of vertebrates. The PRL1 gene exists in two forms: fish-type PRL1 gene (PRL1B) and tetrapod-type PRL1 gene (PRL1A). It has been proposed that PRL1B gene underwent duplication during the early amphibian lineage. Subsequently, the ancestral gene (PRL1B) was lost in amniotes, while the newly duplicated gene (PRL1A) was retained. Notably, only amphibians possess both PRL1B and PRL1A genes. In the anuran amphibian bullfrog, PRL1A gene expression is low during the pre- and prometamorph

Natural selection can drive organisms to strikingly similar adaptive solutions, but the underlying molecular mechanisms often remain unknown. Several amphibians have independently evolved highly adhesive skin secretions (glues) that support a highly effective antipredator defence mechanism. Here we demonstrate that the glue of the Madagascan tomato frog, Dyscophus guineti, relies on two interacting proteins: a highly derived member of a widespread glycoprotein family and a galectin. Identification of homologous proteins in other amphibians reveals that these proteins attained a function in ski

The skin is the biggest organ in the human body. It is the first line of protection against invading pathogens and the starting point for the immune system. The focus of this review is on the use of amphibian-derived peptides and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the treatment of wound healing. When skin is injured, a chain reaction begins that includes inflammation, the formation of new tissue, and remodelling of existing tissue to aid in the healing process. Collaborating with non-immune cells, resident and recruited immune cells in the skin remove foreign invaders and debris, then direct the
