Motilin in amphibians.

Motilin was first identified as a gastrointestinal (GI) motility-stimulating peptide and was later shown to mediate the gastric migrating motor complexes (MMCs) in several mammals. Motilin and its receptor have also been identified in non-mammalian vertebrates, including birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. This discovery has prompted comparative studies on its physiological roles in GI motility. This review focused on amphibian motilin and its role in GI contractions. Like those of mammals, birds, and reptiles, amphibian motilin is a 22-amino-acid peptide produced in the mucosa of the upper

Carotid labyrinth of amphibians.

The amphibian carotid labyrinth is a characteristic maze-like vascular expansion at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery into the internal and external carotid arteries. The carotid labyrinths of anurans are spherical and those of urodeles are oblong. In the intervascular stroma of both anuran and urodelan carotid labyrinths, the glomus cells (type I cells, chief cells) are distributed singly or in clusters between connective tissue cells and smooth muscle cells. In fluorescence histochemistry, the glomus cells emit intense fluorescence for biogenic monoamines. In fine structure, the g

Motion sickness in amphibians.

We explored the question of whether amphibians get motion sickness by exposing anurans (frogs) and urodeles (salamanders) to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. Animals were fed before flight, and the presence of vomitus in their containers after flight was used to indicate motion-induced emesis. None of the species that we studied vomited during the 8 to 10 parabolas of each flight. However, at least one specimen from each of the anuran species Rana rugosa, Rana nigromaculata, Hyla japonica, and Rhacophorus schlegelii vomited in a period of 0.5 to 42 h after flight. Some sp

Orthopedics in Reptiles and Amphibians.

Musculoskeletal disorders are a common cause for presentation of reptiles and amphibians to the veterinarian. A clinical approach to orthopedic cases starts with a thorough history and review of husbandry, and identification of any underlying or concomitant disease. Medical management is indicated for pathologic fractures. Traumatic fractures may require surgical intervention. Stabilization options include external coaptation and/or external and internal fixation. Special considerations must be given to shell fractures in chelonians. Many techniques used in mammalian practice can be applied to

Medicine and surgery of amphibians.

Amphibians are most notably characterized by their glandular skin, which they shed regularly and ingest routinely. It is advisable to handle amphibians only with protective gloves to avoid damaging their skin. These animals absorb water readily across the skin as a means of maintaining hydration. They also easily absorb drugs and anesthetics that are applied directly to the skin. Investigators commonly utilize cutaneous respiration in amphibians and evaluate skin abnormalities via wet mount preparations, skin scrapes, and biopsy. The examination of blood samples can be useful in evaluating the

Amphibian Dermatology.

Amphibians are susceptible to a multitude of skin disorders, many of which can appear grossly similar. The most common clinical presentations include hyperemia, discoloration, dermal mass, ulceration, and necrosis. Many amphibian skin diseases are related to captive husbandry. The diagnostic process starts with environmental evaluations, a full history, physical examination and sampling for direct observation, histology, polymerase chain reaction testing, and bacterial and fungal culture. This review emphasizes the main conditions encountered in amphibian dermatology.

Ossification sequence heterochrony among amphibians.

Heterochrony is an important mechanism in the evolution of amphibians. Although studies have centered on the relationship between size and shape and the rates of development, ossification sequence heterochrony also may have been important. Rigorous, phylogenetic methods for assessing sequence heterochrony are relatively new, and a comprehensive study of the relative timing of ossification of skeletal elements has not been used to identify instances of sequence heterochrony across Amphibia. In this study, a new version of the program Parsimov-based genetic inference (PGi) was used to identify s

Limb regeneration from amphibians to mammals.

The ability to regenerate complex appendages varies strikingly across vertebrates, yet the developmental principles that enable complete limb regeneration remain incompletely understood. In mammals, regenerative responses are largely restricted to distal digit tips, whereas amphibians - such as the axolotl - can regenerate entire limbs throughout adulthood. This contrast provides a powerful framework for dissecting how adult tissues rebuild form, pattern and proportion after injury. In this Review, we synthesize recent advances from mammalian digit tip regeneration models and amphibian limb re

Peptide and protein pheromones in amphibians.

Purification, characterization and biological activity of urodele and anuran sex-pheromones were reviewed. Female-attracting pheromones obtained from the abdominal gland of Cynops pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda males are peptides consisting of 10 amino acid residues being designated sodefrin and silefrin, respectively. Each pheromone attracted only conspecific females. Molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding sodefrin and silefrin revealed that both are generated from precursor proteins. Synthesis of these pheromones is regulated by prolactin (PRL) and androgen. Responsiveness of the female vomerona

Amphibian Intestine Allometry.

Across four large vertebrate groups-fish, reptiles, birds and mammals- intestine length has been shown to scale hyper-allometrically with body mass (BM), at an exponent higher than the geometric (isometric) expectation, 0.33. So far, amphibians have not been investigated in this respect. Combining original data from dissections and literature data, we evaluated the scaling of total intestine length with BM in the adult stages of 38 amphibian species (37 of which anurans). The BM range of investigated taxa was 2.2 to 113.5 g. When accounting for phylogeny, intestine length scaled with BM at an

Neuroendocrinology of amphibian metamorphosis.

The timing of metamorphosis is a central amphibian life history trait and is controlled by the interplay of developmental progression, body size and condition, and environmental signals. These different processes and signals are integrated by the neuroendocrine system to regulate production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone (TH) is the primary morphogen controlling metamorphosis, while corticosteroids (CSs) produced by the interrenal glands synergize with TH to promote metamorphic changes. The actions of TH are modulated by monodeiodinase enzymes expressed in TH target tissues.

Amphibian biology and husbandry.

Extant amphibians comprise three lineages-- salamanders (Urodela or Caudata), frogs and toads (Anura), and caecilians (Gymnophiona, Apoda, or Caecilia)--which contain more than 6,000 species. Fewer than a dozen species of amphibians are commonly maintained in laboratory colonies, and the husbandry requirements for the vast majority of amphibians are poorly known. For these species, a review of basic characteristics of amphibian biology supplemented by inferences drawn from the morphological and physiological characteristics of the species in question provides a basis for decisions about housin

Amphibian respiratory diseases.

This article describes the diseases that commonly affect the lungs, gills, and nasal passages of frogs, toads, and salamanders. Although these organs often are affected by systemic infections, only diseases that are limited to the respiratory system are discussed. Gills of aquatic amphibians commonly are affected by poor water quality, infestations by protozoa or trematodes, or infections by water molds. Nematodes in the genus Rhabias are significant pulmonary pathogens in frogs and toads. The nasal passages of frogs, toads, and salamanders may be parasitized by Bufolucilia fly larvae.

Amphibian calcium metabolism.

Calcium is present in amphibian blood at a concentration similar to that in other vertebrates, about 1-2 mmol l-1. The fraction of free calcium in amphibians is lower than that in other tetrapod vertebrates because about 50% of the plasma Ca2+ is bound to plasma proteins and perhaps other molecules. Plasma [Ca2+] varies seasonally, increasing in spring and summer and decreasing in winter. Changes in plasma [Ca2+] also occur during larval development, as the concentration of this ion increases in larval forms as they approach metamorphosis. Calcium is exchanged at a variety of sites in animals.

Thyroid and reproduction in amphibians and reptiles.

The relationship between the thyroid gland and reproduction in amphibians and reptiles has been studied for more than 100 years. Most studies suggest a positive involvement of thyroid hormones with some aspects of reproduction, but some studies support a negative role for thyroid hormones at certain life stages. Comprehensive studies of gene activation/suppression by thyroid hormones and their absence at various levels of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis coupled with observations of adrenocorticoid activity, reproductive performance, and metabolic involvement are needed to understand thi

Estimating dermal contact soil exposure for amphibians.

Chemical exposure estimation through the dermal route is an underemphasized area of ecological risk assessment for terrestrial animals. Currently, there are efforts to create exposure models to estimate doses from this pathway for use in ecological risk assessment. One significant limitation has been insufficient published data to characterize exposure and to support the selection and parameterization of appropriate models, particularly for amphibians in terrestrial habitats. Recent publications measuring pesticide doses to terrestrial-phase amphibians have begun to rectify this situation. We

Agrochemicals disrupt multiple endocrine axes in amphibians.

Concern over global amphibian declines and possible links to agrochemical use has led to research on the endocrine disrupting actions of agrochemicals, such as fertilizers, fungicides, insecticides, acaricides, herbicides, metals, and mixtures. Amphibians, like other species, have to partition resources for body maintenance, growth, and reproduction. Recent studies suggest that metabolic impairments induced by endocrine disrupting chemicals, and more particularly agrichemicals, may disrupt physiological constraints associated with these limited resources and could cause deleterious effects on

Ocular Surface Biology and Disease in Amphibians.

Vision is essential for amphibians, so a healthy ocular surface is critically important. There are ocular surface abnormalities that occur predominantly in captive animals, such as corneal lipidosis, whereas others, such as UV-induced trauma or infectious and parasitic conditions, may be critical to survival for animals in the wild. It is believed that inherited defects are going to be seen in small captive populations but it may be that confined wild groups of amphibians can be just as severely affected. Anything that blinds an animal severely affects its life changes.
