The ultrastructure of the hepatopancreatic caeca of Gammarus minus (crustacea, amphipoda).

The hepatopancreatic caeca of the freshwater amphipod Gummarus minus are four tapered blind pouches lined with a simple columnar epithelium bearing an apical surface of regular microvilli and resting on a basement membrane. This epithelium is enclosed by a tonic, striated muscularis. Each caecum consists of three regions. The distal zone is formed of embryonic cells having a high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio and giving rise to the other cell types. The second or differentiation zone consists of regular tall columnar cells of two morphological types:(1) light staining R-cells which have a large

Pathogens and other symbionts of the Amphipoda: taxonomic diversity and pathological significance.

With over 10000 species of Amphipoda currently described, this order is one of the most diverse groups of freshwater and marine Crustacea. Members of this group are globally distributed, and many are keystone species and ecosystem engineers within their respective ecologies. As with most organisms, disease is a key factor that can alter population size, behaviour, survival, invasion potential and physiology of amphipod hosts. This review explores symbiont diversity and pathology in amphipods by coalescing a range of current and historical literature to provide the first full review of our unde

Anatomy of the extrinsic gut musculature of Gammarus minus (Crustacea: Amphipoda).

Inserting on the buccal and esophageal foregut of Gammarus minus are numerous pairs of serially arranged dorsal dilator muscles, a single pair of lateral muscles, and two pairs of posterior muscles. Muscles of the cardiac stomach include three dorsal sets, a single pair associated with the pterocardiac ossicles, and two pairs inserting on the ventral aspect. A single pair of muscles inserts on the lateral aspect of the pyloric stomach. The extrinsic muscles of the foregut originate from exoskeletal apodemes of the cephalothoracic cuticle, sockets of the mandible, and a maxillary bridge that li

Echinogammarus lusitanicus (Amphipoda), a New Intermediate Host of Echinorhynchus truttae (Acanthocephala: Echinorhynchidae).

PURPOSE: The infection of brown trout (Salmo trutta) by the acanthocephalan parasite Echinorhynchus truttae is initiated by the ingestion of gammarid crustaceans harbouring the cystacanth form. Gammarus pulex has been reported as the common intermediate host of this parasite species. The absence of G. pulex in the rivers of Spain suggests that native gammarid species may play the role of intermediate host for E. truttae, which is the only acanthocephalan species reported in salmonids in this country. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether native gammarid species of Galician ri

Caprellidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda) of Aotearoa New Zealand waters: a constantly changing landscape.

A snapshot of the changing landscape of the Aotearoa New Zealand caprellid fauna is presented. This study is primarily an examination of historic material, mainly from the NIWA Invertebrate Collection. The caprellid fauna from this region suffers from similar problems to many amphipod groups recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. These problems primarily have arisen from Northern Hemisphere researchers (during the years 1760-1920), examining the fauna, and after seeing similarities to known, familiar fauna, assume they are the same organism, creating a concept of 'cosmopolitan' species. The faun

Friction reduction mechanism of the cuticle surface in the sandhopper talitrus saltator (Amphipoda, talitridae).

In many cases, strong friction reduction is critical for success of both living organisms and engineering systems. Some arthropods exhibit good antifriction abilities in their specific living environments and have inspired many innovations for solving industry challenges. However, the current literature mainly focused on terrestrial insects, such as beetles, grasshoppers and katydids. The antifriction mechanisms in amphibious arthropods are still unknown, even if their surfaces are optimized for both air and water environments. Herein the tribological properties of the cuticle surface of the s

Survival and precopulatory guarding behavior of Hyalella azteca (Amphipoda) exposed to nitrate in the presence of atrazine.

Nitrate is one of the most commonly detected contaminants found in aquatic systems with other pesticides such as atrazine. The current study examined potential combined effects of nitrate and atrazine on adults of the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca, using survival and precopulatory guarding behavior as toxic endpoints. Although significant differences in acute toxicity with nitrate alone and in binary combination with atrazine (200 µg/L) in water-only tests were not consistently observed for each time point, potential biologically relevant trends in the data were observed. Posttest growth

Population structure and dynamics of Gammarus fossarum (Amphipoda) upstream and downstream from effluents of sewage treatment plants.

Two streams in Germany (Körsch and Lockwitzbach), each with two sampling sites above and below a sewage treatment plant (STP) discharging effluent, were investigated. Sampling sites were characterized, and exposure monitoring for chemicals with known or assumed endocrine disrupting potential was carried out. Both the population structure and the population dynamics of Gammarus fossarum were examined. The physicochemical parameters measured at the sampling sites of the Lockwitzbach and Körsch streams were found not to reach levels having an acute toxic impact on the development of gammarids. Th

Rediscovered syntypes of Procrangonyx japonicus, with nomenclatural consideration of some crangonyctoidean subterranean amphipods (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Allocrangonyctidae, Niphargidae, Pseudocrangonyctidae).

Two missing syntypes of the Japanese subterranean amphipod Procrangonyx japonicus (Uéno, 1930), the type species of Procrangonyx Schellenberg, 1934, were rediscovered in the collections of the Kyoto University Museum. The morphology of uropod 3, which has been considered the principal diagnostic character of the genus, is redescribed on the basis of one of the syntypes, and the nomenclatural history of the generic names Procrangonyx and Eocrangonyx Schellenberg, 1937 (corrected from 1936) for some Far-Eastern subterranean amphipod species is reviewed. Two New Species of Stygobiotic Amphipod Niphargus (Amphipoda: Niphargidae) and their Phylogenetic Relationship with Other Congeners from Iran.

Two new amphipod species from Iran, Niphargus sahandensis sp. nov. and Niphargus chaldoranensis sp. nov., are described based on their morphological characteristics and molecular analyses. Bayesian inference analyses of COI and 28s rDNA sequence data provided evidence for the validity of the two species and their placement in the Niphargus genus. N. sahandensis sp. nov. primarily differs from similar species by having more than two hook-like retinacles on the inner surface of pleopods I-III, the presence of two spines at the base of uropod I and rectangular-shaped propodi in both gnathopods. Application of artificial neural network models to analyse the relationships between Gammarus pulex L. (Crustacea, Amphipoda) and river characteristics.

This study aimed at analysing the relationship between river characteristics and abundance of Gammarus pulex. To this end, four methods which can identify the relative contribution and/or the contribution profile of the input variables in neural networks describing the habitat preferences of this species were compared: (i) the "PaD" ("Partial Derivatives") method consists of a calculation of the partial derivatives of the output in relation to the input variables; (ii) the "Weights" method is a computation using the connection weights of the backpropagation Artificial Neural Networks; (iii) th

Reduction of body segmentation in the skeleton shrimp Caprella scaura (Amphipoda: Caprellidae) inferred from comparative internal anatomy of Caprelloidea.

In bilaterians, particularly arthropods, body segments are often functionally differentiated along the anterior-posterior axis, resulting in lineage-specific morphologies. Although the acquisition of novel traits in body segments or appendages is considered a key driver of animal evolution, the loss or reduction of these structures has also contributed to the adaptation to new environments and emergence of novel body plans. Members of the family Caprellidae (Caprelloidea: Amphipoda: Crustacea), commonly known as skeleton shrimps, exhibit an unusual body plan characterized by highly elongated t
