Constitutive phenolics of Harpephyllum caffrum (Anacardiaceae) and their biological effects on human keratinocytes.

Assessment of the UV protecting potential of an aqueous methanol leaf extract of Harpephyllum caffrum proved that it possesses a distinct radical scavenging effect and inhibits the production of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 by human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) following UV radiation. Phytochemical investigation of this extract led to isolation and structural determination of the hitherto unknown phenolics, kaempferol 3-O-(2″-sulphatogalactopyranoside), its quercetin analogue and 3-methoxyellagic acid 4-O-galactopyranoside in addition to 18 known phenolic compounds. The structures were det

The Mulli Hypothesis: an ethnobiological framework for studying the phytopharmaceutical potential of Schinus molle (Anacardiaceae).

BACKGROUND: Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae), the Andean "molle" or "mulli," is among the longest-used trees of western South America. Despite more than 3 decades of pharmacological research, reports remain heterogeneous and no reproducible phytopharmaceutical candidate has emerged-an inconsistency that may arise less from insufficient experimentation than from the biological object never having been adequately defined. AIM: This article integrates the historical-linguistic, archaeological, ethnobotanical and taxonomic record and proposes a falsifiable framework-the Mulli Hypothesis-for how t

[Contact allergy to Anacardiaceae. A review and case reports of poison ivy allergy in central Europe].

In Europe, as opposed to North America, poison-ivy rash is hardly known. For this reason a detailed review of the allergenic members of the Anacardiaceae family is given, and the misleading nomenclature of "poison ivy", "poison oak", and some other species of this family are discussed. An up-to-date representation of the chemical structure of the allergenic substance group (denoted as "Urushiol") from this family is provided as well as botanical information regarding the plants themselves. Prevention of this dangerous sensitization and the therapy of this allergic reaction are discussed. The f
