The Anaplasma ovis genome reveals a high proportion of pseudogenes.

BACKGROUND: The genus Anaplasma is made up of organisms characterized by small genomes that are undergoing reductive evolution. Anaplasma ovis, one of the seven recognized species in this genus, is an understudied pathogen of sheep and other ruminants. This tick-borne agent is thought to induce only mild clinical disease; however, small deficits may add to larger economic impacts due to the wide geographic distribution of this pathogen. RESULTS: In this report we present the first complete genome sequence for A. ovis and compare the genome features with other closely related species. The 1,21

Anaplasma ovis as the suspected cause of mortality in a neonatal elk calf.

Anaplasma ovis infection is known to occur in elk experimentally, but without clinical signs or significant clinicopathologic changes. An elk farm in southern Indiana experienced the death of 3 neonates. Gross findings suggested hemolytic anemia as the cause of death. Splenic impression smears revealed numerous intra-erythrocytic parasites compatible with Anaplasma spp. Products of a semi-nested PCR targeting the msp4 gene of A. ovis were sequenced and had 100% identity with published A. ovis sequences. Given the clinical presentation, vertical transmission of A. ovis was suspected. Pathologic

Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic analysis of Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma marginale in Ixodidae infesting livestock in northwestern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Anaplasma marginale and Anaplasma ovis are tick-borne obligate intracellular bacteria causing anaplasmosis in cattle and small ruminants, respectively, with considerable economic losses worldwide. Given the favorable ecological conditions for tick survival and the limitation of data on Anaplasma spp. in local tick populations in northwestern Iran, this study aimed to molecular and phylogenetic analysis of A. ovis and A. marginale in Ixodidae infesting livestock in northwestern Iran. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 780 ixodid ticks were collected from livestock a

Molecular Characterization and Prevalence of Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Goat Population in Siirt Province From Türkiye.

Anaplasmosis is a major tick-borne infectious disease affecting small ruminants, leading to significant economic losses due to decreased productivity and, in some cases, mortality. This study aimed to determine the molecular prevalence of Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections in goats raised in Siirt province, Türkiye, and to genetically characterize the detected isolates based on the major surface protein 4 (MSP4) gene region. A total of 250 randomly selected apparently healthy goats were sampled between July and September 2025. The overall molecular prevalence of A. ovis wa

Molecular detection and characterization of Anaplasma ovis, Theileria ovis, and Theileria lestoquardi in sheep and goats in Luxor, Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases cause economically significant losses to animal production globally, and anaplasmosis and theileriosis are associated with the greatest losses. However, the spread of the relevant pathogens in flocks of domesticated animals in southern Egypt is little understood. Accordingly, in this study, we aimed to determine the prevalences of Anaplasma ovis, Theileria ovis, and Theileria lestoquardi in southern Egyptian sheep and goats through blood tests, and to make a molecular characterization of the A. ovis detected in sheep targeting a specific gene. RESULTS: We colle

High genetic diversity of Anaplasma ovis in sheep from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

BACKGROUND: Ovine anaplasmosis (sensu stricto) is a rickettsial blood disease caused by the tick-borne species Anaplasma ovis. The disease is characterized by mild anemia, fever, and icterus. A more severe clinical presentation is possible in non-endemic areas. There is no existing data on the presence of Anaplasma ovis in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, given the country's location within the Mediterranean Basin and the recent molecular detection of Babesia ovis, it is plausible that sheep in the region could naturally be infected with this tick-borne pathogen. METHODS AND RESULTS: Blood sa

First serological and molecular evidence on the endemicity of Anaplasma ovis and A. marginale in Hungary.

Recurring and spontaneously curing spring haemoglobinuria was recently reported in a small sheep flock in a selenium deficient area of northern Hungary. In blood smears of two animals showing clinical signs, Anaplasma-like inclusion bodies were seen in erythrocytes. To extend the scope of the study, 156 sheep from 5 flocks and 26 cattle from 9 farms in the region were examined serologically with a competitive ELISA to detect antibodies to Anaplasma marginale, A. centrale and A. ovis. The seropositivity in sheep was 99.4%, and in cattle 80.8%. A. ovis and A. marginale were identified by PCR and

Susceptibility of two Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep to experimental infection with Anaplasma ovis.

In North America, the role of wild ruminants in the epidemiology of anaplasmosis has not been clearly defined. Such information is particularly meager in regard to bighorn sheep. We report the susceptibility of two Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) to experimental infection with a well characterized field isolate of Anaplasma ovis obtained from domestic sheep in Idaho. Both bighorn sheep developed infection resulting in severe clinical disease, with relatively high parasitemias, icterus and anemia. One animal required tetracycline therapy and responded well to treatment

Development of a real-time PCR assay for detection and quantification of Anaplasma ovis infection.

Anaplasma ovis is a tick-borne intra-erythrocytic rickettsial pathogen of small ruminants. Real-time PCR possesses merits of rapidity, accuracy, reliability, automation and ease of standardization, but has not been used for detection of A. ovis, to the best of our knowledge. In this study, a real-time PCR assay was developed for detection and quantification of A. ovis. Species-specific primers and TaqMan probe were designed based on the gltA gene. No cross-reactions were observed with Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Borrelia burgdorferi s. l., Chlamydia psittac

Identification and evaluation of midgut protein RL12 of Dermacentor silvarum interacting with Anaplasma ovis VirD4.

Anaplasma ovis, a tick-borne intra-erythrocytic Gram-negative bacterium, is a causative agent of ovine anaplasmosis. It is known that Dermacentor ticks act as biological vectors for A. ovis. VirD4 is the machine component of Type IV Secretion System of A. ovis. To better understand the pathogen-vector interaction, VirD4 was used as a bait protein for screening midgut proteins of Dermacentor silvarum via yeast two-hybrid mating assay. As a result, a ribosomal protein RL12 was identified from the midgut cDNA library of D. silvarum. For further validation, using in vitro Glutathione S-transferase

Anaplasma ovis infection in sheep from Iran: molecular prevalence, associated risk factors, and spatial clustering.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the molecular prevalence and associated risk factors in sheep populations of Iran. To this end, between March 2017 and February 2018 jugular vein blood samples were collected from 1842 apparently healthy sheep from 327 herds in nine provinces in four ecological zones of Iran. A specific nested-PCR targeting the msp4 gene of A. ovis was employed. Fourteen variables were subjected to logistic regression analyses (univariate and multivariate) to specify the potential risk factors for infection. Statistically significant variables in univariat
