Anatomic Landmarks in Transoral Oropharyngeal Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive transoral surgery for oropharyngeal cancer is a challenge for head and neck surgeons because of the inside-out anatomic presentation and the confined workspace. This study was performed to describe the main neurovascular and muscular landmarks in a transoral approach. The authors propose an anatomic stratification for this surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral wall of the oropharynx and base of the tongue of 15 formalin-fixed heads (30 sides) and 5 fresh cadaveric heads (10 sides) sagittal sectioned were dissected from the inside outwards. Dissection of 7 fr

Anatomic landmarks in the sleeve gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a common bariatric procedure. The operation is relatively standard, but there are still variations among surgeons. The two main variations are bougie size and extent of distal resection. Some surgeons will start the gastric resection at 2 cm proximal to the pylorus, whereas others start at 6 cm. Our hypothesis is that there are anatomic landmarks that are constant and can be used to help standardize the procedure. METHODS: Twenty-eight morbidly obese patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery (gastric bypass or sleeve gastr

Anatomic landmarks for Basal joint injections.

OBJECTIVE: Basal joint arthritis is a common cause of pain and disability, particularly in elderly women. Corticosteroid injection with splinting provides a reliable long-term relief for patients with mild arthritis. Proper location of the basal joint with anatomic landmarks can facilitate diagnosis and treatment of basal joint arthritis while avoiding inadvertent injury to local structures. The purpose of this study is to identify bony anatomic landmarks for basal joint injections and aid clinicians in avoiding inadvertent injury to surrounding structures on the radial side of the wrist. Anatomic landmarks of the glossopharyngeal nerve: a microsurgical anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with other lower cranial nerves, the glossopharyngeal nerve (GPhN) is well hidden within the jugular foramen, at the infratemporal fossa, and in the deep layers of the neck. This study aims to disclose the course of the GPhN and point out landmarks to aid in its exposure. METHODS: The GPhN was studied in 10 cadaveric heads (20 sides) injected with colored latex for microsurgical dissection. The specimens were dissected under the surgical microscope. RESULTS: The GPhN can be divided into three portions: cisternal, jugular foramen, and extracranial. The rootlets of the GPhN

Anatomic landmarks for arthroscopic suprascapular nerve decompression.

PURPOSE: Arthroscopic suprascapular nerve (SSN) decompression has become a more frequently utilized procedure in the treatment of SSN entrapment and has gained popularity over recent years. Despite increasing technical notes and outcomes information regarding this technique, there remains a paucity of data with respect to clear anatomic guidelines for teaching this procedure. The purpose of this study was to provide guidelines that are visible arthroscopically and palpable externally to allow safer and more efficient surgery for arthroscopic decompression by analysing the superior scapular ana

Anatomic landmarks for the first dorsal compartment.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of anatomic landmarks for the first dorsal compartment can assist clinicians with management of de Quervain's disease. The radial styloid, the scaphoid tubercle, and Lister's tubercle can be used as superficial landmarks for the first dorsal compartment. METHODS: Thirty-two cadaveric wrists were dissected, and measurements were taken from the predetermined landmarks to the extensor retinaculum. The compartments were also inspected for variability of the abductor pollicis longus tendon and intracompartmental septations. RESULTS: The average length of the extensor retinacu

Value of anatomic landmarks in carpal tunnel surgery.

This study investigated which anatomic landmarks were most useful for correct and safe incision placement in carpal tunnel surgery. Kirschner wires were attached to the hands to mark previously defined landmarks. The bony attachments of the transverse carpal ligament, which were identified previously, were drawn on an anteroposterior digital x-ray of the hand, with the thumb in full abduction. The relationship between anatomic landmarks and these bony attachments were examined. In all hands, either the line along the third web space or the crease between the thenar and the hypothenar regions,

Anatomical landmarks for ankle block.

We aimed to describe anatomical landmarks to accurately locate the five nerves that are infiltrated to accomplish anaesthesia of the foot in an ankle block. Twenty-four formaldehyde-fixed cadaveric ankles were studied. Photographs of cross sections of the frozen legs, cut at a horizontal plane across the most prominent points of the medial and lateral malleoli, were analysed. The curvilinear distance from the most prominent point of the closest malleolus to each of the five cutaneous nerves and their depth from the skin surface were measured. Sural, tibial, deep peroneal, saphenous and medial

The ileal flange: an anatomical landmark.

The abdominal surgeon is largely unappreciative of the peritoneal reflections of the ileocaecal region. This is not surprising since the literature on this subject is sparse. The available descriptions in standard texts (Hollinshead, 1971; McMinn, 1994; Williams et al. 1995) outline the appendicular mesentery as developing from the lowest aspect of the ileal mesentery. The inferior ileocaecal recess develops between the mesentery of the appendix and the ileocaecal fold; the superior ileocaecal recess develops between the ileal mesentery and the vascular fold of the caecum. The clinical signifi

Retinal Histology and Anatomical Landmarks.

The wall of the eye consists of three layers: the sclera (the outermost layer), the choroid (the middle layer), and the retina (the innermost layer). In between choroid and retina, Bruch's membrane can be found. Each of these layers has specific characteristics and can be subdivided into different layers. In this chapter, retina, Bruch's membrane, and choroid will be detailed.

Anatomical landmarks of radical prostatecomy.

INTRODUCTION: In the present study, we review current literature and based on our experience, we present the anatomical landmarks of open and laparoscopic/endoscopic radical prostatectomy. METHODS: A thorough literature search was performed with the Medline database on the anatomy and the nomenclature of the structures surrounding the prostate gland. The correct handling of puboprostatic ligaments, external urethral sphincter, prostatic fascias and neurovascular bundle is necessary for avoiding malfunction of the urogenital system after radical prostatectomy. RESULTS: When evaluating new pro

Comparison of portal vein anatomy and bony anatomic landmarks.

PURPOSE: To determine if a relationship exists between the right portal trunk (RPT) and bony structures that might aid guidance of needle passes into the RPT during transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two TIPS portal venograms were reviewed. The distance of the mid-RPT from the lateral margin of the vertebral column was measured and calculated as a fraction of the adjacent vertebral body width. The cephalocaudal height of the RPT was compared with that of the posterior ribs and rib spaces. The cephalocaudal height was evaluated with fre

Endoscopic landmarks corresponding to anatomical landmarks for esophageal subsite classification.

OBJECTIVES: Individual treatment strategies for esophageal cancer have been investigated based on the anatomical subsite classification. Accurate subsite classification based on these anatomical landmarks is thus important. We investigated the suitability of the existing endoscopic classification and explored alternative landmarks for esophageal subsite classification. METHODS: Patients who received endoscopic ultrasonography (and computed tomography scans for surveillance of esophageal cancer treatment or esophageal submucosal tumors were included. Distances between anatomical landmarks, inc

Pelvic emergency clamps: anatomic landmarks for a safe primary application.

The application of the pelvic clamp as a tool for emergency stabilization of unstable pelvic ring fractures has proved to be a life-saving procedure. Using correct technique, the pelvic clamp can be applied within a few minutes after the patient's admission. To avoid severe complications (eg, pin perforation into the pelvis) during the application, anatomic landmarks for the correct pin placement have to be defined. The surface landmarks that are presently recommended for the correct pin placement are not always reliably found due to deformation of the body surface caused by swelling and hemat

Prevalence of anatomic landmarks for orientation during elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the prevalence of common anatomic landmarks around the gallbladder that may be useful in orienting surgeons during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: The subhepatic anatomy of 128 patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy was recorded. We searched and recorded the presence of five anatomic landmarks: the bile duct (B), the Sulcus of Rouviere (S), the left hepatic artery (A), the umbilical fissure (F), and the duodenum (E). These are the previously described B-SAFE landmarks. RESULTS: We found that the duodenum and umbilical fissure were present relia

Thecaloscopy through sacral bone approaches, cadaver study: further anatomic landmarks.

Endoscopy of the spinal canal, for interventional studies, diagnosis and therapy, is a scientific topic that has attracted the interest of neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and orthopedic surgeons for the past twenty years. Endoscopy of the thecal sac was assumed to be less important than endoscopy of the ventricular system by neurosurgeons. Nevertheless, during the last years it has attained increasing scientific interest, firstly because of the introduction of small diameter flexible endoscopes and secondly due to the growing interest for minimal invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

Anatomic landmarks of the buccal branches of the facial nerve.

The aim of this study was to classify the buccal branches of the facial nerve in relation to the parotid duct and its relevance to surgical procedures such as rhytidectomy and parotid gland surgery. In this study, 30 cadaver heads (60 specimens) were dissected. The vertical and horizontal relationships between the buccal branches of the facial nerve and tragus, and parotid duct were recorded and analyzed. The buccal branches of the facial nerve were classified into four types: Type I: a single buccal branch of the facial nerve at the point of emergence from the parotid gland and inferior to th

Anatomical landmarks for hemispherotomy and their clinical application.

OBJECT: The authors introduce the surgical concept of the central core of a hemisphere, from which anatomical structures are disconnected during most current hemispherotomy techniques. They also propose key anatomical landmarks for hemispherotomies that can be used to disconnect the hemisphere from its lateral surface around the insula, through the lateral ventricle toward the midline. METHODS: This anatomical study was performed in five adult cadaveric heads following perfusion of the cerebral arteries and veins with colored latex. Anatomical landmarks were used in five hemispheric deafferen
